If I remember correctly a Portsmouth player had some sorta misconduct toward the end of a season and some disciplinary action was to carry over to the next season but the Portsmouth kid transferred to Wheelersburg and avoided any discipline at all. A wide receiver. Played two sports I think. After he hit the portal and was recruited to his county rivals program he got ya know a clean slate. No type of discipline accompanied him.
Heard a rumor the job has been filled, and I don’t like who took it or the other changes that were made. Portsmouth loves to stay in house and keep using the same old regime
Some systems are happy with the norm and don’t want changes. Many have little johnny who is coming up through the system and he is going to be the star if daddy has something to say about it.
It’s all a buddy system at Portsmouth. These guys went to school together, have coached under Clifford/Kalb. It’s going to keep being the same old until they get someone fresh in there. Rumor I heard is a former head coach was offered the head gig again. He’s a good guy, but that doesn’t mean he’s a good coach. Welcome to mediocrity of 5-5 again Trojan faithful.
I don’t think so personally. Duncan had his chance and was average at best. Both guys are Clifford and Kalb disciples, meaning the crazy on field behavior and lack of utilizing talent will continue. Both great guys, good past players, solid position coaches but same old status quo with either in charge.
From what I’ve been told by some people in the know, the job hasn’t even been opened up yet. Should make for an interesting few weeks when it does open up. That job will probably still attract some good suitors due to the available talent pool.
A friend of mine told me that Duncan didn’t coach football this year and hasn’t put his hat in the ring for the job. His focus is baseball. Also told me that Hammond wants the job and has over 25 years of experience at the school coaching football.
What are some names of prospective outside candidates?
Duncan wasn’t on staff this year. He’s a good baseball coach, was a great position coach for Portsmouth for many years, his 2 years in charge of football were average. Maybe need a better sample size, but I would think he just sticks with baseball. Hammond may have a lot of years coaching but that doesn’t equate to him being a good head coach. Not sure he was on the staff this past season either. I don’t know if what I was told are rumors or truth behind it. The guy I talked to at a basketball game doesn’t seem the type to just say stuff. But I guess ya never know.
If I don’t get any of the other coaching jobs I applied for I might be interested in this one. If I get it I’m going to pay Howie Codwell to just stand on the sidelines and scare the refs. That’s gotta be worth at least a couple tuddys a game. Plus I bring my boy with me and I garran gawd da••tee ya he’ll be the best player on the team.
One aspect of the Portsmouth football culture that must change is to get participation numbers up. This past season the roster was not much above 30 and has been declining for quite a while. It wasn’t too long ago that we had about 50 playing. Depth is so important in a high school football program, and right now PHS doesn’t have much of it.
