Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio- Preseason Edition has dropped 10/31 @ 8pm

Post by pfloyd »

The committee of one - me - has been going through last season's napkin stats, post season rosters, district division 3,4,5,6,7 rosters from last season via Convo District programs, eye test notes from last season, gut feelings, coaches & staffs , next level players etc. to come up with this years 2025-26 preseason rankings - THIS SEASON IS HARD!!! ... there are a LOT of good TEAMS this coming season - parity is a great word ... teams 1-30 are really good this season! some are proven, others SHOULD BE good based on returning players, some have what look like good rosters but are unproven, some teams are totally starting from scratch BUT have outstanding coaching staffs and have JV teams from last season who were undefeated ... at least one team has BOTH an undefeated freshman AND an undefeated JV team to pull a varsity team together from ... some teams will sport a solid group of starters but be thin off the bench ... others are needing to find scorers ... still more looking for size while some of the quality teams seem to keep finding 6-5+ players with talent ... tough rankings to come up with ... BUT the committee has to start somewhere - the best guess based on my information and information & insight from those of you who have proven to be great sources of info in the past ... Friday, Oct. 31st @ 8pm will have the Preseason Rankings dropping with the beatings following immediately I'm sure LOL ... all good! as I TOO am looking forward to seeing for myself via the eye test as many teams who I BELIEVE SHOULD BE Elite 8 teams vs those who WILL PROVE ME WRONG in the preseason by getting it done on the court - for those pfloyd will find a court near me that gives me a chance to see for myself why they should be moving up the rankings throughout the season ... let the 2025-26 campaign begin ...

Is this the first time in a long time that there really aren't any MUST watch players or teams in the entire district in any division? I am not saying there aren't good teams, but that's exactly what PFloyd said-- GOOD! I just don't see any MUST WATCH material this season. This is no disrespect to anyone or any programs out there. Again correct me If I'm wrong Id love to watch them if there is!

Two questions need to be answered to make a prediction on the Meigs-Miami Trace game: 1. How far will Miami Trace go in the football playoffs?
2. Is Guthrie playing basketball or heading off to Clemson early?

Miami Trace will likely lose in Week 12 to Jackson.

Yes, Guthrie is 100% playing basketball.

Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio - Preseason Edition

1. Marietta ... the Tigers of Coach Gardner/Coach Warner finished the 2024-25 regular season campaign at 16-4 with 2 of those losses coming at the hands of the Warren Warriors ... MHS played a total of 6 games vs SE District teams (3 games vs Warren going 1-2, a 1 pt loss to a stacked Meigs team, easy wins vs Athens & Belpre) , tied for the TSL 'ship with Warren ... outstanding lineup returning led by 6-3 sr Zaiden Wittekind, 6-3 sr Owen Riley, 6-2 sr Trey Hawkins, 6-1 sr Logan Grosklos, and 6-4 sr Braiden Plaugher ... senior heavy/varsity experience/good perimeter scoring/tough D/battle tested lineup without looking at the Marietta JV contribution to varsity ... last season averaged 63 ppg vs points against on D 45 ppg ... knowing how to score AND playing defense holding the opponent under 50 ppg - great combo to have entering the season ...

2. Miami Trace ... Coach Ackley has the Panthers entering this season with a 21-0 regular season winning streak ... MTHS will battle Jackson to repeat their FAC 'ship from last season ... returning lettermen : 6-7 sr Adam Guthrie , 6-0 sr Cade Whitaker, 6-1 sr Luke Armstrong, 6-3 jr Julian Baker, outstanding PG/SG 6-0 soph Gage Bowers , Connor Napier 6-3 sr ... key players lost to graduation - bookend 6-4 wings in Trey Robinette/Skye Salyers ( losing these 2 key players was my main reason to not have them at #1 - losing key offense on the perimeter/rebounding from the wings)... MT continues to grow 'em big west of Rt 23 joining 6-8 Adam Guthrie in the paint will be 6-5 soph Matt Barnard/6-7 soph Ty Huffman ... another athlete joins the Panther family in 6-2 soph transfer Baron Phipps ... last season MT put up 57 ppg while holding opponents to 45 ppg ... Big first game of the season for MT as Miami Trace travels to Meigs on Saturday 11/28 @ 7:30 p to take on D1 recruit (Air Force/Mississippi State so far) 6-8 sr. Carson Davis 18.9 ppg 1st team All Ohio/District D4 Player of the Year & 2nd Team D5 All Ohio Colben Beuchler 10.2 ppg ...

3. Jackson ... The Ironmen at 17-5 finished 2nd in the FAC (8-2) behind 21-0 reg season champs Miami Trace (10-0) ... Coach Morrow's crew returns all but graduating senior Garrett Legg (6-2) ... everyone else returns as 4 year starters to be - 6-2 sr Stephen Jenkins, 6-2 sr. Charlie Woodard, 5-11 sr Ryan Seimetz, 6-2 sr Bodhi Wolford , 5-10 sr Jax Carroll ..filling the void left by Legg will more than likely be 6-4 jr CJ Crabtree ... JHS avg. 54 ppg vs their opponents being held to 45 ppg vs the Jackson D ... the Ironmen under Coach Morrow has the reputation of solid/man to man D - this year will be nothing different ... 54 ppg on offense - last season the Ironmen showed they CAN put up points as they threw down 81 on the road vs Wheelersburg in a losing effort ...

4. Unioto ... Basketball excellence has been common place for the U over the last 15 years ... Coach Hoops took over in 2007 with 3 losing seasons, in the next 14 years that followed the U ran off 244 wins vs 87 losses under Coach Hoops ... Coach Matt Combs returned to his alma mater last season to guide UHS to a 24-4 season SVC/District 'ship/Regional appearance ... the U has averaged 18 wins vs 6 losses per season over the last 15 seasons only 1 losing season in the span (10-13 in 2018-19 season) ... the U is poised to make another run after going 19-3 in the regular season last year ... losing 2 seniors off of the starting lineup ( Blake Hoops 6-2/ 6-5 KB Perkins/ Caden Cutright 5-10) ... returning varsity letterman 6-0 sr PG Blake Fitch ( might be the best in all of SE Ohio no matter the division) - at any level IF you have THAT GUY at PG you are never out of the game ... penetration/throwing dimes/perimeter & midrange scorer - Fitch is the real deal ... 5-10 sr Jaxon Zickafoose , 6-0 jr. Isaac Coy, 5-10 jr. Jack Welch, 6-7 sr Dawson Mitchell to go along with 5-10 soph Cayden Patterson, 6-1 sr David Long ... UHS avg. 63 ppg offensively while giving up 46 ppg defensively ... last season the U lost to both FAC big boy teams Miami Trace (53-69) & Jackson (46-60) ...

5. Chesapeake ... out of the OVC the Panthers of Coach Ater had an excellent year in 2024-25 19-3 in the regular season with 2 losses to OVC champion Fairland ... key personnel loss in PG Ethan Kerns from last season but the rest of the rotation returns ... a rotation that avg. 62 ppg while opponents scored less than 50 ppg at 45 ppg ... led by Maddox Kazee 6-3 jr./Kaden Perkins 5-9 sr PG/ 6-3 jr. Phillip Thacker, 6-5 soph Andy Chapman and imo the key to the CHS success this season 6-5 sr. Karson Frecka - the big sr post/swing forward CAN be the difference maker for Coach Aters' Panthers - outstanding on the boards, physical defender, CAN get to the rim and shoot the foul line mid range jumper - one of my favorite big men in the SE district ... not a regular season game BUT Chesapeake will be taking on a talented Chillicothe team at Hatton Gymnasium in Chilli on Monday 11/24 in a preview game - pfloyd will be in the cheap seats for this one ...

6. Circleville ... the Round'town boys of Coach Callahan .. this might be the highest the Tigers have been since I have been doing my Elite 8 rankings, I'm pretty sure they have never made it into the Elite 8 ... the Tigers come off of a 13-9 regular season ... CHS averaged 50 ppg offensively and gave up the same on defense ... CHS did not have the services of one of the best pg/sg Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line in Kole Nungester 6-1 sr ... a solid front court for the Tigers in 6-6 sr Ed Kirk, 6-4 sr Riley Jenkins rounding out the returnees Jacob Reichelderfer 5-8 sr. and 6-3 sr. Jack Kline ... a varsity experienced, senior laden squad with size, a PG , play solid defense ... the Tigers start the campaign with back to back MSL games vs an always tough Bloom Carroll team and then on the road @ Logan Elm at the Reservation ( Round Town was 2-0 vs both of those opponents last season) ... Circleville will do a great job representing the Northwest Territories in the Elite 8 rankings ...

7. Southern ... the small school representative in the Preseason Elite 8 is held down by Coach Caldwell's Southern Tornadoes ... D7 ... SHS was going to be a solid TEAM had nothing happened to up their stock in the portal ... Reed Brinager 6-5 sr. swing forward with the ability to step out on the perimeter/shoot the midrange jumper/gets to the rim baseline... Brinager brings size, rebounding, physical play ... Brinager played a good schedule last season with Meigs - Marietta/Warren/Jackson/Westfall/Hillsboro/New Lexington ... Andre Chandler 5-9 PG is outstanding - hardnosed/total competitor, 32 minutes per game guy ... scores at the rim, foul line jumper, and the 3 ball - outstanding ... overall Southern is an athletic group through 10 players at least ... with Brinager in the lineup it frees up EVERYONE to play within themselves imo ... by the time the season starts in late November - this group will have lots of boxes checked off - inside big, outstanding floor leader/PG, excellent D, bench that can contribute ...

8. Waverly ... new coach - Coach Teryn Jarrett (Meadowbrook HS) ... a 7-15 regular season record in 2024-25 ... a team that MAY BE a year away from making a deep run in the post season ... nearly the entire roster returns ... size, athletes at every position, multiple pg's and shooting guards ... I looked at the roster multiple times, even had them as far down as 20 in the early notes BUT I really like the roster that returns led by soph 5-11 Kage Alexander pg/sg floor leader - had great AAU/Summer/Fall seasons ... quality minutes will come from Unioto transfer Kai Keesee a 5-11 fr. Keesee will give Alexander the opportunity to be on the receiving end of dimes - enabling Kage to take advantage of picks to get free & get to the rim, catch and shoot on the perimeter beyond the arc - Keesee was a big pickup from the portal ... throw in returning size Sawyer Myers jr 6-5/"little bro" 6-4 jr. Gunnar Myers , 6-4 jr. Landyn Russell, returning to the team will be 6-5 soph Garrett Rosenberger ... 6-2 jr. swing forward Teagan Hurt - solid/excellent defender finishes in transition ... problem - what might be the toughest schedule in the Southeast district ... the only "breathers" may be 3 games between November 26 and Christmas mixed in with the likes of Gallia/Zane Trace/Miami Trace/Portsmouth West/Wheelersburg ... if the record is good and even if it is .500 or slightly above .500 the Tigers will be a force in the post season ...

Been following this and my Senators for years and 11th is the highest I’ve ever seen us (Even though it’s preseason). I’m a so pumped for the guys on the West Side this year and watching a very competitive SOC slate of games!

Cameron34Crazie34, I like what Coach McClanahan has at his disposal only losing 3 seniors off of last years squad with Mason Parker the only sr seeing real action for the West Siders ... so the whole rotation returns, 6-4 Logan Wolfenbarker will play the entire season - life is good ... 3 of the 5 starters ( 6-3 Will Kegley sr/6-1 sr Cristian Quirasco/Wolfenbarker) can score from the perimeter throw in 6-4 jr Corbin Miller with the ability to score behind the arc ... I like the defense and the transition game that allows PWHS to push the ball and finish ... add starters 5-9 jr Owen Richards/5-8 jr Braden Adkins to the mix neither scored when I saw them last season in 2 games (Valley & Nelsonville York) ... need scoring from both of them of some kind this season ... good Southern Ohio hoops size with 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 ... 4 scorers /inside outside game on offense - 32 minutes full court D ... lots to like with many opportunities in their SOC division to move up and down the rankings throughout the season ...
