Valenth's Thoughts from Week 5...

Post by Valenth »

Another week in the Books! Let's discuss what this week had...

1. The SEC took a Big Hit....

Kentucky, Texas A&M and Arkansas all losing.
Georgia barely Escapes a VERY Mediocre Missouri Team... this is TWO weeks in a Row that the Bulldogs have given up 22 Points to "Not so Great Teams"

In the SEC East... the game to determine the East will likely be Georgia vs Tennessee... And I'm liking the Volunteers a little more each week!

In the SEC West... the Mississippi teams are better than advertised. They might pose a challenge for the Crimson Tide.

2. B1G West is absolutely a Mess...

Minnesota falling to Purdue was a little bit of a Surprise... it might come back to Iowa or Even Illinois as a Front Runner! (Bielema got some sweet revenge on Wisconsin)

3. B1G East is Rolling along!

Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all doing their thing!

4. ACC is starting to slowly look a little clearer...

Clemson got the Job Done.
Wake Forest took care of an Undefeated Seminoles Team.

However we had IMO a decent upset in Georgia Tech knocking off Pittsburgh as well as Boston College knocking off Louisville.

5. BIG XII.. Oklahoma State and TCU hands down are the front Runners.

Oklahoma State took down Baylor.
TCU DESTROYED Oklahoma (Never thought I'd say that)

These two teams are hands down the favorites to win the BIG XII.

6. PAC12 continues to be all USC in the South.. and Now just Oregon in the North after giving Stanford a Beating.

I was slowly getting sold on Washington...However UCLA pulled a Lee Corso... "No so fast my friend!" UCLA Could be a dark horse... but honestly USC has too many weapons in the arsenal.

My Predicted AP Top 10 Poll (made at 8:09 AM on 10/2)

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Georgia
4. Michigan
5. Clemson
6. USC
7. Tennessee
8..Oklahoma State
9. Penn State
10. Utah

(However Ole Miss could pop in the top 10 after knocking off Kentucky who was previously 7th.)

Thoughts?

Given the love the SEC gets, I don't see the moving OSU above Georgia, even though the Dawgs looked mediocre at best vs Missouri.

OSU is the real deal. I don't see any defense in the B1G slowing them down. I also don't see anyone scoring more than 24 against the first team defense.

Can we finally take Dumbo Fisher's Aggies, Oklahoma and a few others out of the top 25? They were pretenders all along (I said early that A&M wasn't good).

Clemson is not the powerhouse they used to be. Let's face it....NC State is NOT a top 10 or even 20 program. Yet Clemson struggled mightily at times with the Wolfpack.

We now get into October and the cream will rise to the top.

There is OSU, Bama and Georgia all alone at the top. Michigan is a distant 4th and we are seeing them struggle with decent opponents. Iowa is AWFUL offensively this year. Zero identity.

This is probably the biggest gap I've ever seen in the top programs and the rest in college football. More to do with the transfer portal than anything. It will certainly be fun watching things play out this year.

On a side note- who wins a brawl between Ryan Day and Greg Schiano? Lol

My old guy take is that UGA and Bama are an interchangeable #1 and # 2 until they actually lose. This is based on their talent alone.

Ohio State is now a more legitimate title threat because they have shown they can win without Stroud throwing for 400+ yards. That and an improved defense.

I also get some satisfaction from Texas A&M struggling despite their pay for play NIL recruiting success.

Finally, the feel good story of the year is Kansas. I watched a replay of their game this morning. The Rock Chalk Jayhawks are not a threat for any championships, but it was refreshing to see a team and their fans derive pure joy and fun from the game of football.

I failed to mention this yesterday...

Bama QB Bryce Young injured his throwing shoulder in the second quarter against Arkansas. He was flushed out of the pocket, scrambled to his right and was tackled by the ankles. He was trying to throw the ball away at the time he was tackled...fell awkwardly on his right shoulder. Saban called it a sprain....we'll find out more Monday or Tuesday

That is both unfortunate and interesting . Young is a tremendous talent and by all accounts a decent person . If he has to miss a few games, Alabama will be challenged. They have only one true doormat left on their schedule in Austin Peay on Nov 19th.

It is always good to see some college football teams other than the usual suspects get some recognition. However I fear NIL and the transfer portal will create a permanent split between the haves and have nots.

My sleeper pick to win the Big West is sneaking up on people after that big win in Gopher land. Their only two losses have come by a combined total of 7 points to undefeated teams or they would be undefeated themselves. If Aidan O'Connell can stay healthy it will be them and Illinois to decide who comes out of the West Division and be the sacrificial lamb in Indy.
I watched the Bammer game live while the Bucks were playing (because I knew that would be a sleeper) and thought Bammer was in trouble when their Heisman Trophy winner had to leave in the second quarter. They looked vulnerable at first because the Hogs were making a charge, then Bammer's talent took over and it was lights out. Very impressed with the way they regrouped after losing their best player. Thought for sure Georgia was going to be upset looking at the ticker. They had to dig deep for that one. They better get it together soon or it will happen!
I agree it's nice to see Kansas making some noise in something other than roundball. I would love to see them win their conference but it's probably a long shot.
As for the brawl, I will take Schiano Lol

The scary thing about OSU is that we havent even seen them 100% healthy. Smith Njigba was hurt on the first play of the season as potentially the best receiver in college football. Henderson has been fighting a nagging injury. Several DB's have been out.
Its going to be fun to watch when they have everyone back.

And @cbolt I think it would be a good fight between Day and Schiano. Day is a much bigger man than he looks on TV but Schiano just looks like a hard nose guy to bring down lol.

I know right. Schiano was a linebacker and Day was a QB so that's all I need to know.

But Day is about 15 years younger than Schiano so jot that down

I think it would be a good dual

I'll put my money on the linebacker. Fifteen years isn't too much of a spread if the older guy is in good shape. Linebackers are bone crushers.
