The Senate confirmed Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) Tuesday to serve as the next U.S. Secretary of State on a 94-3 vote.
“I can think of no one better to take on the challenges of this position,†said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who will take over as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as Kerry moves on to his new role. “John has already built strong relationships across the world. … He will need no introduction to the world’s political leaders.â€
Applause errupted on the Senate floor after the vote tally was read. Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) voted against Kerry’s nomination but none explained why during two hours of floor debate prior to the vote.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved Kerry’s confirmation out of committee earlier Tuesday. Ranking member Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) highlighted Kerry’s personal background as qualifications for the job — Kerry is a Vietnam War veteran and traveled around the world as a child with his father who was a Foreign Service Officer.
“I don’t know too many people who have oriented their whole life to be better suited for Secretary of State,†Corker said on the Senate floor ahead of the vote.
Corker said he believes that Kerry will be more open to Congressional oversight of the State Department and be a “partner.â€
Kerry will replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who served throughout President Obama’s first-term. She has said her last day will likely be Friday.
I take that as a badge of honor to have those three , ahem, senators , to vote against Kerry…Those three could not carry Kerry’s luggage… :12224
