Muskingum Valley League 09-10 Scores and Standings

Who wins?

I don’t know who will win… But it seems like the schools in the Muskingum Valley League do not have very good basketball programs all around… No offense meant, but I would say basketball is more their sport…

Within the past 10 years, Philo, Morgan, Maysville and Tri-Valley have represented the MVL in the D2 regional tournament…Tri-Valley seems to be the most consistent program in the league…don’t really know about the personnel in the MVL this year, but there are some Sheridan fans saying that the Generals could have a nice team this year. I would have to think that the Scotties of TV will be at or near the top, though.

The MVL is a very good wrestling league, thats way bball usually suffers.

Sheridan should have a younger team but some height and talent.

You can tell some of you are quite young. Ten years ago, this was a very competitive league that had several teams playing at a high level. In 1999, Philo lost in overtime in the D2 championship game to Kettering Alter – and didn’t win the MVL (Tri-Valley did). West Muskingum was outstanding that year and was a rimmed-out half-court shot away from knocking out Philo in the SECTIONAL. Crooksville was also very good then, and handed TV its only loss of the season, in the final game AT Dresden. New Lexington and Sheridan were also strong, and so was John Glenn. Honestly, only Morgan and then-member River View were perceived to be "weak."

Tri-Valley and Philo both made it to the Regional in Athens that year, too, and only Washington Court House’s upset of the Scotties prevented an all-MVL regional championship game.

But over the course of the last decade, the talent level (IMO) has eroded. There have been some very good teams and very good players, but the top-to-bottom quality of the league has eroded.

Every single one of the teams has question marks this year, but none of them come close to where this league was not too long ago. That’s just reality … and I don’t believe wrestling or football has anything to do with it.

That sheridan team returned the next year almost in tact (99’-00’) and took Cambridge to the wire in the regional. The MVL has very good athletes but has been down for a few years, it will cycle back up. Sheridan has an excellent group of talented players this year and none of them are seniors. All go between 6-2 and 6-6. The TVC is not very strong, teams out of that league have inflated records based on schedules. I remember my senior year we played a Trimble team that was something around 17-2 the final game of the year, we jumped out by 20 in the first quarter and it was never a game. I also recall a new lex team a few years back who was horrible taking top seeded vinton to the wire in a sectional game.

If memory serves VC handed a decent Philo a 26 point beatdown that year @ Philo. And for whatever reason New Lex always plays VC well. They seem to play in the sectionals almost every year and not too long ago (maybe 3 years ago) played each other in the regular season. With 1 or 2 exceptions New Lex always kept it close. To say the TVC is weak is a joke every year a team from the TVC endsup in a District Championship. Dont see many teams from your league at the Convo come time for the second season actually never see them there. Sorry facts are facts.

VC is 6-1 vs. New Lex…and 10-4 vs. the entire MVL.

Don’t forget about Morgan’s run in 2000-01 to the D-2 regional–a year that even after running the table in the MVL, weren’t given much of a chance to get out of the sectional. That squad certainly turned some heads, outplayed (and probably should have beaten) an undefeated Washington Court House team in the Sweet 16 at the Convo.

You also have to remember that only 3 of the 9 schools in the league are in the Southeast District. The remainder are in the Eastern District and wouldn’t get a chance to play at the Convo until the Regional. Several of them also have to make it through perennial powers like Dover, New Philly, Garaway, Fort Frye etc. And, now that Tri-Valley is D-1 for hoops, they get shipped to Columbus and don’t get any favors in seeding even when they are a pretty good team.

No love for Morgan? I thought they had a few quality guys back.

They return their best player but he does not have any help.

Maysville was in the Regionals 2 years ago & Tri-Valley the year previous. The title will be between John Glenn, Sheridan & Tri-Valley. Personally, I think john Glenn will win it but we will see.

Is John Glenn that improved or has the MVL weakened overall?
