GAHS stops Vinton County, 48-19
Host Vinton County had a quick 13-0 lead before Gallipolis Gallia Academy snapped the ball, but the Blue Devils bounced back to score a 48-19 triumph over the Vikings.
It was Gallia Academy’s fourth straight win following a 62-19 loss to unbeaten visiting Athens (5-0) in the first game of the season. GAHS, 4-1, will hit the road again next Friday to play unbeaten Belfry, Ky. Belfry is also 5-0.
Meanwhile, Vinton County fell to 3-2. The Vikings will travel to Alexander for a Tri-Valley Conference game on Oct. 4.
Gallipolis kicked off to start the game Friday. On Vinton County’s fifth play of the game, Viking quarterback Andy Long threw a 45 yard TD pass to Devin Hall with 9:01 left in the period and it was 6-0.
After a successful extra point by Zack Stulley, VCHS kicked off to Gallipolis but the Blue Devils fumbled with Vinton County recovering on the Blue Devils 19. Three plays later is was 13-0. On a 10-yard run by big tom Ousley. VC missed the extra point with 7:37 left in the period.
Gallipolis came roaring back to make it 13-7 with 4:46 left in the first when Wade Jarrell hit Reid Eastman with a 25-yard touchdown strike. Dylan Saunders added the extra point.
About two minutes later, Jarrell hit Logan Allison with a 45-yard TD to knot the score at 13-all with 2:19 left in the period. Saunders put the Gallians ahead to stay with his extra point.
It was the first of four Jarrell to Allison touchdown passes in the contest.
Gallipolis scored three uncontested touchdowns in the second period and outscored the Vikings 14-6 in the third stanza. Coaches emptied their benches in the final 12 minutes.
Gallipolis TDs in the third was a 32-strike by Jarrell to Logan with 8:01 left in the half. Saunders kick made it 21-13.
With 1:07 left in the half, Jarrell hit Logan with a 42-yard TD and Saunders made it 28-13.
Gallipolis made it 34-13 with 14 seconds left in the half when Jarrell hit Logan with an 80-yard TD pass, Saunders missed the extra point attempt.
In the third period, Jarrell hit Eastman with a 30-yard strike and Saunders made it 41-13.
Vinton County later scored on a 42-uard run by Levi Thompson to make it 41-19.
Final GAHS score came on a five yard run by Wade Jarrell with 3:02 left in the quarter. Saunders made it 48-19. The score came following a 50-yard run by Allison.
GAHS lost the services of sophomore Eric Ward, linebacker, with 1:07 left in the second period. Ward was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Gallipolis had a 15-14 edge in first downs and a 468-318 advantage in total yards but VC ran 69 plays to the Blue Devils 47 from the line of scrimmage.
GAHS fumbles once and lost it. The Vikings fumbled three times but recovered all three. Gallipolis was penalized eight times for 80 yards. VC was penalized five times for 25 yards.
Gallipolis’ Logan Allison punted four times for 148 yards (37.0). Vinton’s Zack Sulley punted three times for 95 yards (31.6).
Reid Eastman had two pass interceptions for GAHS.
Wade Jarrell completed the game with 12 of 17 completions for 319 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. Logan Allison was 0-1 passing.He gained 51 yards rushing in 10 tries with one touchdown.
Allison gained 65 yards in four trips, Ty Warnimont had 32 yards in seven tries, Kole Carter ran twice for two yards and Blake Wilson minus one yards on two trips.
Allison caught seven passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Eastman caught four passes for 77 yards and two scores.
Wes Jarrell had one catch for 15 yards and Payton Halley one catch for three yards.
Devin Hall had two receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings. Todd Wallingford had two catches for four yards and Nate Shrader one catch for six yards.
