Southern looked REALLY good tonight. Had 2 kids hit 80 on the gun and fielded it really well.
Strange decision to pull the starter around 40 pitches and end up using up both of the pitchers from tonight’s game to where they can’t pitch against Clay, but I’m sure they had their reasons.
One thing I couldn’t gather from tonight was the ability of Southern’s catcher, because he better to good to slow down the Clay running game.
They don’t have the same coach (Ryan Lemley) that strung together all those regionals appearances at Beavers, but they’re always fundamentally sound and having a few dudes that can flat out play.
My first thought as well when I saw that pitching change, but then saw the SP rolling and rubbing his right arm and favoring it quite a bit. My understanding is that he catches as well, and I would imagine he was feeling some serious discomfort. When they made the change, he went to 1B. I am guessing it was health-related more than strategy related.
The catcher was very solid. Wiry and quick (leadoff hitter also) and has a nice arm. That’s the second time I have seen Southern play this year and they look very strong all around the field, as well as off the bench.
If his arm was sore or he was in discomfort, kudos to Southern’s coach for making the change. I’ve been around a lot of baseball and some coaches would ask you to stick it out and get another inning or two. I might find myself rooting for Southern a little more now.
Southern did beat a loaded Athens team. Granted Athens didn’t pitch it’s ace but Southern’s ace held Athens offense down. Southern makes its 13th Regional appearance so they are pretty familiar with Newark Catholic
Not bitter at all! That Trimble team is/was one of the best to have come thru SE Ohio football history and my Irish held as tough as they could be until the difference between a blue blood
/state contender and a once-proud program just happy to be in week 11 revealed itself.
If bitter at anything at all, it’s toward these sorry a** Christian schools up here not fielding baseball teams. The lack of teams is what’s forcing these “districts of death.” Go asl Hiland and the East District how two district tournaments would fare and play for them! As they say up here, “beat Newark Catholic and you’re going to the final four.”
That does suck. Some districts definitely get screwed. It would suck being in the same district as the best baseball school in Ohio Newark Catholic. It’s like every year Athens goes to regionals in soccer and always runs into Desales
D3 SEO definitely has the easiest path every year in all sports
