OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
Iowa's 14-13 victory over Michigan may have cost the Buckeyes a shot at the BIG 10 championship and the College Football Playoffs. If both 0SU and Penn State win out, the Lions go to CCG due to their win over the Bucks. Based on the past two seasons, the Committee has not selected a non conference champ for the playoffs. State could be ranked as high as second come Tuesday but may not make the final cut. What say you?

Yeah, come Tuesday night they'll most likely be #2. If they win out, I'm fairly certain they'll be in. If they win out, the committee cannot justify taking them from #2 to out of the top 4.

Remember what they did to TCU a couple years ago? they Dropped TCU for no apparent reason......

If OSU win's out and doesn't make the conference championship game, there are a couple ways they make it. Clemson/Louisville doesn't win the ACC Champ game, if they don't win, the ACC doesn't get in. The Big 12 is essentially already out unless something crazy happens. We are assuming Alabama is getting in, and they are essentially the only SEC team that can get in. Say OSU levels MSU and TSUN and Penn State wins the B1G Championship game, both Ohio State and Penn State could possibly get in. There is still so much more that can happen this season that I'm not assuming anything, this has been a crazy year so far.

Re: OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
If Ohio State and Penn State both win-out, I think this is how the playoff would unfold as of right now:
1. Alabama (unless something beyond bizarre happens like losing 2 games)
2. Clemson/Louisville (if Clemson loses against Wake Forest this Saturday, Louisville makes the ACC Championship)
3. Ohio State (1-loss non-champ)/Washington (1-loss champion) [This would be up to the committee to decide]
4. Wisconsin/Penn State (the winner would be a 2-loss champion)
2 and 3 are I changeable depending on the teams, but regardless, there's still lots of football to be played though and ANYTHING can happen. I can see Ohio State getting treated like TCU a couple years back, but with wins @ Oklahoma, @ Wisconsin, vs. Nebraska, and vs. Michigan (assuming OSU wins out) with their loss @ Penn State (potentially conference champion) compared to a conference champion Washington or maybe even conference champions Clemson/Louisville, it'd be difficult to keep OSU out of the playoff with their resume despite not being a conference champion. I would love for Michigan State to help OSU out in week 13 to allow us the chance to leave no doubt by making the conference championship game and win it to make the playoff.

Tcu got bumped 2 years ago when they sat in 4th. I don't see them bumping OSU regardless of what penn st does if OSU wins out and holds down the 2 spot.
Re: OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
I think tcu may have been 3rd and got bumped to 6thBleeding Red wrote:Tcu got bumped 2 years ago when they sat in 4th. I don't see them bumping OSU regardless of what penn st does if OSU wins out and holds down the 2 spot.
TCU is not The Ohio State University
Bucks resume is pretty impressive a win at Oklahoma, at Wisconsin, against Nebraska and hopefully the team up north. The lone loss was at penn state in a game most would say they should have won.

And Penn State is hot right now... and now a Top10 Team! It makes Ohio States resume look THAT MUCH BETTER.fbnut wrote:I think tcu may have been 3rd and got bumped to 6thBleeding Red wrote:Tcu got bumped 2 years ago when they sat in 4th. After a good night's sleep and reflection over a cup of coffee, my thoughts are that the Buckeyes only path to the CFP is to win the BIG CCG. This means OSU has to win out and PSU has to lose. The Committee will select the the four best and most deserving teams which to me means conference champs. Ohio State did not take of business when it mattered.

But heres a HUGE thought.... Say Oklahoma Wins the BIG XII Conference..... Ohio State Defeated Oklahoma.... BIG at Norman... And Will they put a 2 LOSS Conference Champion of a VERY Weak Conference like the BIG XII had been all year in there? That loss Oklahoma has to Houston looks way worse than what Ohio States loss to Penn State looks now.
Now What if Washington loses to Washington State and Colorado wins out the PAC12? That would give the PAC12 a 2 loss Champion... Even if Washington Wins the PAC12... The Strength of Schedule of Ohio State looks Stronger than anyone in the top 10. PERIOD.
Re: OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
Washingtons out of conference strength of schedule is dead last. If Oklahoma and wisky win there conferences the bucks have wins over both. 2 big ten teams in final 4?Valenth wrote:Omega wrote:After a good night's sleep and reflection over a cup of coffee, my thoughts are that the Buckeyes only path to the CFP is to win the BIG CCG. Re: OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
Here is the committee's guidelines they use when ranking and selecting the top 25 teams. Notice what is in bold.Proposed Selection Process:
Establish a committee that will be instructed to place an emphasis on winning conference championships, strength of schedule and head-to-head competition when comparing teams with similar records and pedigree (treat final determination like a tie-breaker; apply specific guidelines).
The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned with the ideals of the commissioners, Presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.
When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable, then the following criteria must be considered:
Championships won
Strength of schedule
Head-to-head competition (if it occurred)
Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)
We believe that a committee of experts properly instructed (based on beliefs that the regular season is unique and must be preserved; and that championships won on the field and strength of schedule are important values that must be incorporated into the selection process) has very strong support throughout the college football community.
Under the current construct, polls (although well-intended) have not expressed these values; particularly at the margins where teams that have won head-to-head competition and championships are sometimes ranked behind non-champions and teams that have lost in head-to-head competition. Nuanced mathematical formulas ignore some teams who “deserve” to be selected.
As we expand from two teams to four teams we want to establish a human selection committee that: (1) will be provided a clear set of guidelines; (2) will be expected to take the facts of each case and specifically apply the guidelines; and (3) will be led by a Chairperson who will be expected to explain publicly the committee’s decisions.
Some of the guidelines and protocols expected to be established to guide the committee would include, but not be limited to, the following:
While it is understood that committee members will take into consideration all kinds of data including polls, committee members will be required to discredit polls wherein initial rankings are established before competition has occurred;
Any polls that are taken into consideration by the selection committee must be completely open and transparent to the public;
Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and championships won must be specifically applied as tie-breakers between teams that look similar;
Committee members associated with any team under consideration during the selection process will be required to recuse themselves from any deliberations associated with that team;
We would expect this same set of principles to be applied, particularly at the margins (teams 10-11-12).

Re: OSU May Not Make The CFP If They Win Out
The committee knows the scenario with Ohio State and the big ten. If the Buckeyes are deserving of the #2 spot today and they win out meaning they beat a top 5 team in Michigan after wins over Oklahoma on the road, Wisconsin on the road and a spanking of Nebraska, there is NO WAY they drop them out of the top 4.
If they are top 4 now and beat MICHIGAN, they have to be in.
