Rules governing innings pitched?
Rules governing innings pitched?
In Ohio high school baseball are there limits on the number of innings that can be pitched in a given time frame? If so, what do they state and are they in effect durning the end of year tournament?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Unless they have changed the rules you get 10 every 4th day.Now how can you have 4 left on Thurs.if you pitched 3 Mon,Tues, weds.

Because it's 3 days. On Thursday, it's just Tuesday and Wednesday that counts. Monday is cleared on Thursdayttomcat 80 wrote:Unless they have changed the rules you get 10 every 4th day.Now how can you have 4 left on Thurs.if you pitched 3 Mon,Tues, weds.

Ohio's rule: 10-inning limit per pitcher over the course of three days

Your right 309.People look it up 6-1-6.10 inngs over 3 days.4 the day you get 10 new ones. That's why I said you can pitch 3 inngs every day because on the 4th day your pitch count starts over even though you only had 9 inngs in 3 days.It doesn't start over after you reach 10.If you have 2 solid pitchers throw them 3 and 4 inngs and rotate which throws 4.Stick a number 3 man in when you up big .You can keep pitch count and inngs down with plenty of rest..If you have the pitchers. You can play 3 games in a week doing this.

So they don't have to rest a day? Can pitch 10 innings (any combination) Monday, Tuesday, Wed, and then 10 more Thur, Fri, Sat?

If you pitch 7 on Monday, you have 3 left until Thursday, when they restart.smurray wrote:So they don't have to rest a day? Can pitch 10 innings (any combination) Monday, Tuesday, Wed, and then 10 more Thur, Fri, Sat?
If you pitch 7 on Wednesday, you have 3 left until Saturday when they would restart.
Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
Mostly right; in theory, you could play a game every single day and only have to go to your 3rd pitcher for 1 inning every 3 days. I'm not sure if I'm reading what you said correctly, but your 10 innings doesn't start over on Day 4, the calendar rolls.ttomcat 80 wrote:Your right 309.People look it up 6-1-6.10 inngs over 3 days.4 the day you get 10 new ones.
So you could do this:
Monday - P1 gets 4 innings (6 left til Wednesday); P2 goes 3 innings (7 left til Wednesday)
Tuesday - P1 goes 3 innings (3 left for Wed; 7 left for Thurs); P2 goes 4 innings (3 left for Wed; 6 left for Thurs)
Wednesday - P1 maxes at 3 (4 left for Thurs; 7 for Fri); P2 maxes at 3 (3 left for Thurs; 7 for Fri); Need 1 more inning from P3
Thursday - P1 maxes at 4 (3 left for Fri; 6 for Sat); P2 maxes at 3 (4 left for Saturday; 7 for Sat)
Friday - P1 maxes at 3 (3 left for Sat; 7 for Sun); P2 maxes at 4 (3 left for Sat; 6 for Sun)
Saturday - P1 maxes at 3 (4 left for Sun; 7 for Mon); P2 maxes at 3 (3 left for Sun; 7 for Mon); Need 1 more inning from P3
P1 & P2 could split 7 innings Sunday & Monday and you'd need one inning from P3 on Tuesday.
That pattern could go on forever. Of course, you probably wouldn't want to throw a kid that much. But if you have games on say Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sat every week you would never have to go to a 3rd pitcher if you didn't want to. If you went Mon, Thurs, Sun (like this past weekends tourney), you could pitch one kid all week.

Another way to think about it is:smurray wrote:So they don't have to rest a day? Can pitch 10 innings (any combination) Monday, Tuesday, Wed, and then 10 more Thur, Fri, Sat?
10 innings Mon, Tues, Wed
10 innings Tues, Wed, Thurs
10 innings Wed, Thurs, Fri
Each day, the first day of the previous 3-day cycle drops off. The OHSAA Baseball Coaches Guide actually shows an example of pitching 3 innings on 6 consecutive days.

Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
It may be a little more clear if they would add one word, any. No more than 10 innings in any 3 day period.

Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
Seems like it should be a "pitches thrown" limit rather than an "innings pitched" limit. Would be very hard to regulate.. Umpires would have to do it, but it kinda sucks that technically you could throw 21 pitches in 7 innings and only have 3 innings for the next two days.. Obviously that's an extreme circumstance, but it could theoretically happen.

Be hard to police but yeah sucks. Saw where Sexton pitched 130 pitches in 7 innings.Rufus wrote:Seems like it should be a "pitches thrown" limit rather than an "innings pitched" limit. Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
Kentucky has went to a pitch count rule.
Max of 120 pitches in a single day
Throw more than 75 pitches in a day- 3 straight days of rest
51-74- 2 straight days of rest
26-50- 1 day of rest
Throw 25 or less pitches- No rest required
Any thoughts that Ohio may soon follow with similar rules?

Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
How do you regulate this? How does a Visiting coach know how many pitches a pitcher threw for a team?
Do Kentucky coaches write it in the scorebook?
I think it should be at the Coaches/Player Discretion.

Re: Rules governing innings pitched?
Obviously a much smaller level, but I've seen it in youth leagues. Coaches hear a kid pitched a lot on another day or whatever and basically ask the league for an inquiry. Coaches are responsible for tracking the count and they'll even go to opponents score books. There is a lot to it, but an inning limit (especially one as terrible as Ohio's) just doesn't protect a kid from an idiot coach. I've seen 10 year-olds throw 150 pitches while getting beat 20-0 in 3 innings and then they'll come back later in the day because you are allowed 6 innings a day in the tournament. Similar things happen at the high school level all the time.baseball16 wrote:How do you regulate this? How does a Visiting coach know how many pitches a pitcher threw for a team?
