Zane Trace (20-10) vs Wheelersburg (21-5) Regional Semi

Post by nice guy »

These two programs have met before in big tournament games. This game will be Thursday at 5pm at the V. A. Memorial Stadium.

Berlin Hiland (27-0) plays Martins Ferry in the other Semi-Final in Minerva.

Pirates need to get key hits. Left several on base against Adena. That can come back to haunt you. ZT can put the ball into play.

Zane Trace is a young team who is on a roll. I read somewhere they had a 6-7 record at one time. So, that means they are 14-3 since.

Thursday should be a great game with both teams playing their best baseball of the year at this time!

Looking at the MANY common opponents this year:

Minford- ZT played them 2 times this year- Lost 13-7 and Won 5-3 (1-1)
Burg played them 2 times this year- Won 12-2 and Won 6-2 (2-0)
Adena- ZT played them 2 times this year- Won 7-6 and Lost 9-4 (1-1)
Burg played them 2 times this year- Won 3-2 and Won 3-0 (2-0)
Waverly- ZT played them one time and Won 8-3 (1-0)
Burg played them 2 times this year- Lost 1-0 and Won 3-0 (1-1)
Portsmouth West- ZT played them one time and Won 15-7 (1-0)
Burg played them 3 times this year- Won 10-0 and Won 13-4 and Won 5-0 (3-0)
Valley- ZT played them 2 times this year- Won 3-1 and Won 10-3 (2-0)
Burg played them 2 times this year- Won 14-1 and Won 4-1 (2-0)
Oak Hill- ZT played them 1 time this year- Lost 12-7 (0-1)
Burg played them 3 times this year- Won 10-5 and Won 7-2 and Won 7-0 (3-0)
Northwest- ZT played them 1 time this year- Won 8-1 (1-0)
Burg played them 2 times this year- Won 11-1 and Won 9-2 (2-0)
OVERALL in the common opponents... Zane Trace 7-3 and Wheelersburg 15-1...

At playoff time, anything can happen. Pitching, fielding, hitting...lots of variables that can be off or on, any given day...

Will be a great game! GO BURG!!!

Looking forward to this game!!! I got there early on Saturday, and Zane Trace has a loud and proud crowd! They must have had at least 500 fans from my estimate.

Thursday will be an exciting atmosphere of 2 HIGH power offensive scoring baseball teams going at it. The Burg CARDIAC KIDS have been down or tied late in the game several times this year and had an inning where they scored 8 runs against Greenup (KY), 7 runs against Oak Hill, several innings scoring 4 or 6 runs against multiple teams. They had a couple 4 run innings late in the game last month when they won the West Virginia Wood Bat Tournament.

After the Adena game where they had bases loaded a few times and were stifled and couldn't push in more runs, I would bet that the Burg won't let it happen again this time.

78.75 hours til FIRST PITCH!!!!!!!!

Only problem with that is most of those are league games for Burg and they threw there better pitchers. For Zane those are non-league and probably threw more like a 4-5 pitcher. Still should be a very good game and I'm taking the Pirates in a close one.

Comparing baseball scores is like comparing apples to oranges. Too many factors involved. Mainly luck and who is pitching.

AGREE WITH YOU TOO MR. FLINTSTONE- BURG HAS 5 LOSSES, BUT HAVE BEEN BEATEN BY NO DIVISION 3 TEAMS- ALL THE TEAMS WERE FROM BIGGER SCHOOLS AND BURG DID NOT PITCH THEIR TOP PITCHERS IN ANY OF THOSE GAMES- HILAND HAS ZERO LOSSES THIS YEAR AND YOU CAN SAY BURG HAS ZERO LOSSES AGAINST D3 SCHOOLS- LOOK AT THE FINAL TOP 10 ON THE YEAR AND MANY OF THOSE TEAMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN BEATEN OUT- APPLES AND ORANGES MY MAN!!!!!

You guys are making good points. When you compare records, these are apples and oranges, due mainly to pitching.

Even the final scores don't tell the whole stories. When Burg played Jonathan Alder first game of the year, Burg scored in each of the first 6 innings and then errors cost them the win. Burg lost by 2 runs and now Jonathan Alder is playing in the Regionals (Final 16) of Division 2.

3 of the 5 losses Burg had were by 1 run. Who else played Lexington Catholic (KY) this year in Division 3 Ohio? I think Lex. mainly played Kentucky and Pennsylvania teams.

You are right, scores and records are apples and oranges

Burg has practically owned Zane Trace, and everyone else in the SVC, for quite a while now. That goes beyond baseball as well. Zane Trace has a puncher's chance because of their offense, but the Burg should be heavily favored.

Burg will likely not throw it's ace since the best D3 team in the state awaits. Burg should win this game

Interesting to see who Burg pitches. There are 12 pitchers who have pitched at different times this year. Have to get to the next game so whatever it takes.

The last team to throw off against ZT is at home now. Granted, Burg is much better than Coal Grove.

Here's my biggest question: when has Coach Estep ever thrown off? I've seen 95% of their tournament games from the District level on since he took over and I'm not sure that I can recall one. As great as Derek Moore was, I'm not sure if he started a Regional or State Final, because he got them to that game first.

He never throws off. I think his philosophy is let's get to the championship game and see. At least that's what I've saw in the state finals each time he's been there.

Berlin Hiland is now (28-0) as they defeat Massillon Jackson 2-1 on Monday night in a regular season game. Jackson is #1 in the state in D1.

Thanks for the info Sweatzy.

Looking forward to watching some great baseball this week. Wheelersburg played Berlin Hiland in the Regionals on May 26 last year and took on Mullet who had the scoreless inning streak. In the 1st inning of the game, Burg loaded the bases with one out and could not push in a run on him. Burg got other runners on and just couldn't execute the small things to get runs on the board. By the end of the game, Burg defense had made at least 3 errors which led to 4 unearned runs and Hiland won 6-0.

This year's Burg defense continues to improve each game and the offense has outscored opponents by 106 runs this year. The defense is on a 2 plus game shutout streak. We'll see if the momentum can continue on Thursday and possibly Friday.

Whoever wins Thursday will need to play a mistake-free game on Friday to beat the undefeated Hiland team.
