We are in the construction aggregates business and every year I get numerous calls for infield material. We have made it in the past with limited success but I have never been satisfied with the material. This past year we uncovered a limited supply of a material similar to what used to be called "Keener Sand". It is a reddish sand / clay mixture that runs to the sandy side. It compacts well when damp and recovers easily when raked. It shears well, thus reducing injuries A few people have used it and are returning for more this year. Almost all of last years run went to one customer and they have requested 150 tons more this year. Only one potential customer turned it down. A college field and the coach felt that it may be too sandy.
This material is not easy to make and as such we will be producing it for about one week this year. It is a limited supply and depending on the progression of our normal stripping it may go into the spoil pile with the overburden and will not be available again. We started screening this morning for our existing orders and would like to have any additional orders this week.
The material looks good thus far. It is screened through 1/2" slotted screens and can have come organic matter including small sticks, etc. There are very few stones and rocks although there may be some. We are trying to selectively excavate only the reddish sand. In the past we have provided the sand component for some of the much higher priced commercial infield mixes and I think this compares.
I normally would not use this forum in this manner but I know that getting this material is very difficult if not impossible. If you like you can PM and I will respond as soon as possible.
