>>I get the Scioto Voice and at least they are covering most of the local games. <<

Which ones am I missing? I think I have gotten all of them so far this year. Eastern happens to be a little hard to keep up with as they drop and add games but the other schedules are relatively stable. (Northwest dropped the game with Greenup) If people let me know schedule changes, I will make sure I get something in about those games too.

We are very lucky to have the Scioto Voice and Ruth covering our local soccer in this area. She has always done a fantastic job for our local kids.

Greenup cancelled the game with Northwest. Northwest picked up Eastern Pike on a Saturday, just don't know which one yet.

Many of the coaches do not call in their information for both volleyball and soccer. However, the PDT's effort is pathetic.

Then when they do cover a contest you cannot tell heads or tails from the reporting. It is usually in different font or type size. One day it was all bold. The stats are a mess with no organization.

Many times they claim it is due to the fact they have to put the paper to "bed" so early, but they still could give us a better effort.

One way everyone could support the area teams: coaches/ADs/supporters send the information to the Scioto Voice (info@thesciotovoice.com) or maybe even the Community Common news@communitycommon.com) even though the Common is now ran by the PDT. I would also bombard the PDT with the information. They would have no excuse then not to publish it.

I went back and looked and last week's issue and it looks like they cut the article short. (Probably due to football taking more than its share--they left out a bunch of pictures too.) Here is what was missing from what I had written and submitted:

West Union 3 Clay 2

West Union led 1-0 at half time but the young Clay Panthers came back to take a 2-1 lead. Early in the second half, Jon Valentine and Garion Dodrill scored within four minutes of each other. Valentine and Dodrill each picked up an assist on the other one’s goal.
West Union came back to tie the game with ten minutes left. Then with less than four minutes remaining, a handball in the penalty box gave the Dragons the opportunity to win the game, 3-2.
“Garion Dodrill and Jon Valentine both had good games,” praised Coach Joe Conkel.

Scoring:
First Half:
WU
Second Half:
PC Jon Valentine (Garion Dodrill)
PC Garion Dodrill (Jon Valentine)
WU (10 minutes)
WU (3 minutes)

My wife has spent a small fortune buying the PDT hoping some form of soccer coverage will be in. If Tuesday results aren't in Wednesday's she will buy Thursday's hoping they were just late. She's beginning to realize that soccer belongs in the third world countries.

Waverly 3 Wheelersburg 2

Waverly picked up a key SOC win as they exploded for three goals over an eight minute period late in the first half.
With 15:34 remaining in the first half, a corner kick was deflected by the Pirate keeper and ended up near Chris Wiget whose low shot found the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Then with 8:43 remaining, a long ball from Tyler Halterman was picked up by Isaac Blanford and dribble down near the goal on a breakaway. He put it past the keeper to increase the lead by one. Just a 1:30 later, another long ball by Chris Wiget resulted in another breakaway and goal by Kennedy Roseberry. Waverly led 3-0 at half time.
Wheelersburg picked up their first goal of the night when Aaron White was driving with a ball toward the net when a Waverly fullback shoved him to the ground. The ensuing penalty kick by White was good and the lead was cut to 3-1.
Late in the game, Alex Provaznik sent a ball behind the Waverly defensive line. Aaron White picked up the ball and drove toward the net. The Waverly keeper missed the ball on the grab leaving a free ball and an open net as Aaron White finished the play to cut the lead to 3-2 with 2:47 remaining.
Both teams missed several opportunities to score as the Tigers’ statistics had them outshooting the Pirates 15-14.
“I thought tonight the team played well and that our victory was a result of a team effort," stated Coach Murphy. "We had a few questionable calls that did not go our way. I felt that our players showed a lot of character and handled those calls well. However, we also made a few mental mistakes that Wheelersburg was able to capitalize on. Overall, I feel that the score does not truly reflect the momentum of the match. We came out with a game plan and executed it well."
Coach Murphy also mentioned that he was impressed with Wheelersburg tenacity. "No matter what, you have to give Paul Boll and Wheelersburg credit, they always come out hard, expecting to win, and they never give up until the final whistle blows."
“The game seemed to be pretty even except for an eight minute period in which Waverly found a weakness in the defense and scored three quick goals.” Coach Paul Boll of Wheelersburg said. “I am proud of the defense being able to close the holes and keep Waverly out of the goal in the second half. The offense picked up their intensity and pressure in the last ten minutes but was unable to get in the tying goal.”
Boll continued. “The Wheelersburg and Waverly games are always intense and either team is usually has a chance at winning at the end of the game. After the first half, I was wondering if this game was going to be like that. But I credit the seniors with raising the intensity so we could bring it back to within one.”
The JV contest was 3-0 in favor of Waverly.

"I was really impressed with the diversity in scoring tonight. The team utilized everyone on the field and worked well together to accomplish the victory," Coach Chris Murphy stated. "We look forward to our next contest and will work hard to continue to represent the Waverly community to the best of our ability. I would like to commend New Boston on playing hard for the entire match.”

“The defense only gave up two shots total and one was a penalty kick. I had our back-up goalie in, Janelle Muck, and she was able to stop that.”
Munion continued. “Our midfield of Haley Figlestahler, Mariah Butcher, Amber Holbrook and Emma Shoemaker did good job of keeping pressure and on passing.”
“Alexander has a really good sweeper and goalkeeper who plays real nice.”

West’s Coach Davis had several players hurt in the game. “Three of West’s starters, Adam Marasek, Ryan Middleton and Kevin Litchenfeld, were injured and will be out for a few games, but Junior Aaron Martin stepped up and kept the fire in the team and did not quit. We are very proud of our kids.”

South Webster 5 Northwest 2

South Webster led only 2-0 at half time but continued to build in the second half to a 5-0 lead before Northwest narrowed it to the final margin of 5-2.

The score remained 2-0 until early in the second half when Brice Patterson scored. Five minutes later, Billy Thurmer added a goal with Matt Malone picking up the assist. Three minutes after that, Matt Malone had his second assist as he found Brice Patterson for the final Jeep score and a 5-0 lead.
Within ten minutes, Chaise Hall of Northwest had scored twice to cut the lead to the final margin. Neither team scored in the last 18 minutes of the game.
“We played a decent game,” commented Craig Havens of Northwest. “South Webster is young but talented. We had a good half, just a couple of defensive break downs. But our young kids on defense, Trevor Hall and Joseph Koenig are making progress and continuing to improve.”
“On Thursday the field conditions seemed to be worse than the day it rained.” Corey Claxon of South Webster explained. “Our guys were making excuses about the field and we found ourselves up only 2-0 at the half in spite of many shots on goal. We extended the lead to five in the 2nd half and then let our reserves play. That's when they scored two on us to make it 5-2. I think it's important to let the young players play when there is an opportunity. That will have to help us in the years to come.”
“After two conference wins this week, I feel like we're back on track.”

Ignert1--it would not have been in yesterday's paper anyway. It was part of the first week's article as posted above. Unfortunately, with the layout program that they have, one thing can cover up part of another article if you are not careful. Mark demonstated it to me when it happened before on my articles. He lays in the one article and then when he drops a (in this case I believe it was the football composite schedule) table--anything that it covers up on his screen disappears and unless he is really aware of it he doesn't realize that part of the article is missing. Luckily it does not happen often.

But since the article in its entirety will be on the CD at the end of the season, I am not going to try to get a game run this late that happened two weeks ago. But it will be there on the kids' keepsakes.

They are still covering football every week. If they are understaffed then maybe they need to run a "featured game of the week" to at least cover the kids at some point and time. Call the schools, get a schedule and cover the games.
Where's "Fletch" when you need him! lol

ignert1 wrote:What is up with the PDT not covering soccer games. I don't know if the coaches are not calling the games in or they just are not reporting on them. I can only think of one game that was covered since the season opener. Waverly/ Whbg game last week wasn't even mentioned. I get the Scioto Voice and at least they are covering most of the local games. I know after many calls and complaints about their first week of football games they picked up their coverage in week two and did a much better job. Maybe it is time for the soccer, and volleyball parents to speak up and ask why are our kids being forgotten. They seem to have plenty of space for OSU football. If I want to read about OSU football I will buy the Columbus Dispatch. At the very time when the PDT has stated they are no longer printing national or international news to cover more local events, they have the exact opposite coverage on sports.

I agree...the PTD is horrible. We've got to have the only town, where their newspaper would rather cover sports 100 miles from here instead of covering local high school sports. Your right, if I want to know about OSU, the Dispatch is the way to go.

What do you expect from a second rate paper? In some of the news stories in PDT that I know the facts are not correct they never correct. Just makes me wonder how much of what is in that paper if factual. No one at that paper from the top down takes any pride in their product and what they put out to the readers. As I said it's a second rate paper for a second rate town and IMO neither is going to improve.

Once again, SSU takes center stage on something around here when there might 3-4 kids from the area playing. When is the PDT going to get it. People around here could give a hill of beans what they are doing, seing how the majority of the players on SSU sports teams are from out of the area.

I will give the PDT credit in that the gameday portion for football was much better in today's paper, but what is up with that crap on page 3 of the sports page? Plus, you had all of that local High school action in the area last night and what is on the front page, 3 AP stories, one on the Buckeyes, one on the Reds and one on the friggin' Columbus Crew. Are you serious!!!!!!!!! The Columbus Crew. I would venture to guess there might be 5 people around here who gives a rats behind about the Crew. Pathethic!!!!!!!!

I just told my wife to go ahead and cancel our subscription to the times. it is not worth the money.

FYI, yabbadabbadoo, The following is a list of LOCAL schools in which we have had LOCAL players on SSU mens soccer roster for 2008:
Wheelersburg-3
Minford-3
South Webster-1
Clay-2
Next time use another team for an example on the lack of high school soccer coverage.
