How in the world does Karissa Adkins and/or Rebecca Puckett from Oak Hill not make at least third team?

The Oaks were 19-1 overall in regular season, and finished fifth in the AP statewide poll, again AP which is what these teams are chosen by, and are now in the Final Four!

A little inside information: I was in the room at the AP all-district meeting when the voters discussed pushing these two for all-state higher than just Honorable Mention. I made my pitch to them since Oak Hill is in my coverage area.

They weren't players of the year in the district, but they were talked about for something higher such as third team all-state or even second-team. Players of the year are automatic first-team all-state.

They were in fact nominated because I was there to see it happen. The state-level AP voters simply snubbed them, but in Southeastern Ohio, you're at the mercy of the state AP often times as we all know.

Looks like the same thing happened in Division IV to Jesse Drayer of Waterford. She deserved at least third-team, and probably second-team.

Amid my last post, I would be remiss if I didn't offer my own congratulations to all of the all-state players.

Keyser I think maybe if we had better sports coverage by the Portsmouth Daily Times our girls my get some of the recognition they deserve, this paper makes no effort.Ironton does a better job and look at the awards Crockrel has won, not that she isn't a good player but Oakhill and Minford both have better. Where is Division III's All Ohio Awards at ? Not in the PDT, but in the Ironton Tribune.

keyser - As always, thanks for the insight to the inner-workings of this "unbiased" selection process. It is really hard to pay much attention to this type of "recognition", once you really have an understanding of what goes into the decisions that end up selecting who goes on these teams.

I knew it was bad 30 years ago, and it simply has not changed.

If you are going to put SE District players in boldface how about putting ALL SE District players in bold.

Steely Dan....Thanks.

sonofbusdriver.....Actually, you can't pin the PDT on this one. The all-state teams are selected by the "state" AP panel. The district panel simply nominates and recommends them to the state panel, who then selects the teams.

Karissa Adkins and Rebecca Puckett were in fact pushed for higher on the all-state teams. By the PDT and all of the other AP outlets in that room. It was discussed, I offered my two cents, and their nominations/recommendations went to the state, which choose to look the other way.

That's why my complaint is with, and everyone else's should be with, the state AP here.

RockKilroy....It looks like Minford Millie boldfaced them all or at least tried to boldfaced them all. What's up with your post?

There were several girls left off this list from the SOC. But the comment about Mercedes Cockrel was wrong. She is a player and deserved all her awards. I'm not sure who you are talking about that was better because I watched the games with Minford and Oak Hill and I COMPLETELY disagree. No need to make that comparison.

My complaint was directed at the coverage of our local newspaper, they left out the entire Div.III picks, after a call to them they printed it the next day with an apology. The Ironton Tribune gives a lot of good press coverage to their kids,an example,All-State girls were individually named and commented about in today's paper. My congratulations to Mercedes, I have watched her play since back in biddy ball and she is good, but the girls from Oak Hill and Minford , and several others in this area are just so fast and exciting to watch, best of luck to all the Seniors of this year's teams and thanks for all the enjoyment we have had watching all of you.

Is there a difference between All Ohio AP and All Ohio Coaches? or is it all the same thing?

The AP team is picked by sportswriters from Ohio's local newspapers. The coaches team is picked by the head coaches in each district at a meeting held at the end of the regular season.
