The rewards will come if they stay focused on what needs to be done to be the best they can be.
You're welcome! The hard work is evident in all phases from the players buying in to the fundamentals being taught by the coaching staff. They take great pride in getting down and guarding people which I really like, and they're well-conditioned. The sky's the limit after that because the talent is there and only going to get better.

I am really happy to see Portsmouth doing well in girls basketball in addition to the evident and fantastic tradition that is there with boys basketball (I still wish I had been old enough to get to cover those 2010-11 and 2011-12 boys basketball teams, would've loved to have seen those guys play plus the Portsmouth and Ironton boys battles were terrific at that time, and would've loved to cover the 2014-15 and 2015-16 teams more but I was a senior in college in 14-15 and in 15-16 I got a full-time job offer in Kentucky that I couldn't turn down).

Both coaching staffs have stayed the course through the good and bad and deserve success. It would be great for the entire school system and much-needed for the Portsmouth community as a whole.

The battles between Portsmouth & Ironton boys during the time period you mentioned were top tier. Zac Carter & Trevor White gave the Trojans fits. Really good matchups. Those 2 years Portsmouth had quite the dangerous team. I’m not saying the girls are sure fired State title contenders, however I would not be shocked over the next year or 2 to see the lady Trojans mount quite the post season run like the boys did a little over 10 years ago.

Watched the Lady Trojans last night vs. Coal Grove......and came away again very impressed with both the junior high and the HS varsity. The JH outscored CG 32-0 in the 2nd half to win 45-7. This despite not having any subs available (the team only has 6 players total.....the starters are two 7th graders and three 8th graders......the 6th player was not available. Mike Hughes coaches this team and has them playing aggressive defense which creates a lot of turnovers.

The varsity so far has had 2 running clocks in 2 games. The first 2 baskets by the varsity were 3 pointers by Daysha Reid and Sienna Allen. Coach Amy Hughes has this team sharing the ball, and on many possessions every one gets a touch. They can push the ball up the court or set up in the half court. Like the JH, they play aggressive defense which sets up quick buckets at the other end.

Fun to watch these Lady Trojans!

Carter was an absolute stud. He dropped 20-plus against Huntington Prep his sophomore year playing against Cleveland State commit Charles Lee. It was a very impressive performance. As you mentioned White was really good and I also thought Trey Fletcher could really play.

Rumor going around the area that coach Hughes sister was kicked out of the gym and banned from Portsmouth games the rest of the year for pushing a referee. Any Portsmouth people have any details?

I've been to both home games and have not seen nothing close to this, not saying it didn't happen but if it did I somehow missed it.

Both games was pretty lopsided so not sure why she would be upset.

I have been told the same and it's from someone I definitely consider reliable.

I attended the 2 home games, and there was a lady escorted from the gym, but I did not see her push a referee. If it did happen, I did not see it but I saw her being removed from the gym. I was sitting on the other side with biggdowgg.

Nope you’ve heard wrong sir..
Amy does fantastic job with the girls while Mike brings vast amount of knowledge to the game. This family works for the district and is here for the long haul. There will be great success for PHS girls hoops over the next 4 years

That’s the strangest part that I couldn’t comprehend. Wheelersburg only scored 2 points in the first half. They lost by a ridiculous amount. And parents still got thrown out and certain players wouldn’t even shake hands with the Wheelersburg players after? Very strange.

This was Jr. High , and I was behind both benches talking with will Robinson, I promise you I do know this because I was in their way,and all 6 Portsmouth Jr. High girls did shake hands followed by their coach.

As for why the lady was ejected I don't know,it was right at the start of the game, she pushed no one but was loud with the ref as she was being escorted out.

Trojans varsity today beat Ripley Ohio by a score of 70 to 33.

I had to leave halfway through the 4th but at that time the lady Trojans had hit 9 three point shots

I love how people think that the ref just made it up. I’m a long time Trojan fan and we all know The Hughes family runs the show. I heard from an acquaintance Amy’s sister was escorted from the gym for abuse of a ref. Initially she was suspended for the year but, with some encouragement, now the ref is reconsidering and they are lessening it to a game or two. Again, Hughes family runs the show down here they will get it fixed so she can come back. Rules don’t really apply to them it seems.

Team is realllllllllllly good and should walk through the OVC including Fairland. State Bound! Go Trojans!!
