Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio -Week 5

Post by pfloyd »

... It's official we are in the 2013 portion of the high school basketball campaign Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ... it's that time of the year when USUALLY the top TEAMS begin to separate themselves from the pack - Ironton has yet to lose to an Ohio team this season, Warren's only loss is a holiday tournament "L" to OCC Upper Arlington, Athens had a hiccup vs 6-5 Wellston at home (by the way the Wellston loss is the only home game AHS has played this season - they have yet to win on their home court in 2012-13 ) ... Eastern Brown has double digit wins at 10-1 ... Logan Elm suffered it's worst loss in years at Bloom Carroll in the Week that Was 45-83 ( BC is undefeated and will be ranked #1 in the state in D3 when the polls come out) ... the mantra for 2012-13 is that "any team can lose on any given night to ANY OTHER team no matter their record (ie. Unioto lost to previously winless Adena this past week 45-52 ... Oak Hill lost to 3-7 Waverly 50-52) ...the committee of one - me - see's the trend continuing into 2013 "your team better bring your "A" game EVERY night or you will be putting an "L" on your handy dandy pocket schedule ...

Didn't realize Trace had only lost two. You're handy.

I92 ... can't do it ... this is what I have for East

Wins :

West Union (0-10)
Rose Hill KY (0- at least 10, average loss margin 30+)
St Jo (4-6)
Symmes Valley (4-4)
Western Pike (2-8)
Ports. Clay (2-5)
South Webster (7-2) East's only win vs team with winning record, South Webster win vs SW who played 3 games last week, last game of the week for SW after they had a big win over the Burg ... South Webster beat East on neutral court the previous week 70-46 ...

.. combined record for East opponents that they have beaten 12-45 with SW having 7 of those wins

Losses :

Notre Dame
South Webster

... the only teams with winning records on the East schedules so far ...

Tuesday night East travels to Eastern Pike - this will be a big game for East if they want to move up the rankings ...

35th behind 3-7 Westfall? You can't discredit their win over South Webster because of their matchup the week before....you could say they made terrific adjustments from last week.

I know they haven't played anyone but there are so many teams that haven't. South Webster was going to be in your top 8.....and they got beat by a now 7-2 team. #35 is too low.

Those are some really tough teams in that Elite 8! I've been able to watch all but 4 of them play....been able to see Eastern Brown and Miami Trace in action twice, probably should switch them on the list. If they met head-to-head, Trace would win that no doubt...play bigger schools, tougher schedule, just too big, long, fast, and aggressive for Eastern Brown.

... I guess a big question is "Does anyone in Southern/Southeast Ohio have a chance to knock off Ironton in the regular season?" ... here's the Fighting Tigers remaining regular season schedule of games :

Gallia
Peebles
(Jan 22) Portsmouth
Akron Buchtel
Huntington WVa
TBA
Wheelersburg
Spring Valley
Chillicothe
Fairland

...you decide ...

Miami Trace is 7-3 lost by 4 or 5 pts to Southeastern from Clark county in the holiday shootout but was missing 3 starters that night with the flu

You have number one right. Carter and Fletcher and co. are going to be a tough out. Miami Trace is strong when they have everybody healthy. Unioto is the question mark for me, I thought they would be better. Warren is solid and are well-coached. LE just keeps re-loading. You are right on! Also I don't see Ironton losing unless to Buchtel.

I'm saying a bigger school is supposed to win against a smaller school. When teams are ranked in the state polls they get more credit for defeating a bigger school and less credit for beating a smaller one. Vinton is a D-2 school they should be a dominant program! And should beat D-3 schools. Is what I mean. Like Webster every year they are competative in the SOC 2 where there's a D2 and the rest D3 all season they play bigger schools. Vinton beating Piketon is a good win for them but they should win they are bigger more kids to pick from. I think any time a little D-4 team beats a D3 or D2 school it should count more than a bigger school beating a smaller school. In my oppinion Piketon should get props for playing a bigger school that close. More props then the big school for beating the smaller. My reasoning may be silly but that's how I vote.

lightle04... I would agree if you were talking DI where there is no limit on the amount of kids. I personally view Piketon and Vinton as an even matchup. They both have good programs with excellent coaches. Per your size argument... Waverly is the only D2 school in their conference against 3's and 4's and they haven't dominated that conference. We just have some excellent D3 and D4 schools who don't think of themselves as underdogs when they go out to play. I personally am glad, it makes for good basketball.

You are right it does make for a good conference. That's just how I do my list when voting .
