Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio Week #1

Post by pfloyd »

... A great first weekend of basketball to ease us Cheap Seat folks into the season ... Surprises??? have had a chance to see 23 of the teams on the 3 lists so far - from scrimmages to the regular season games this past weekend ... I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the TEAMS. Vinton County lost to an explosive Huntington HS squad BUT VC has an excellent starting group - very athletic, scorers, players who get to the rim, one of the better Coach Combs starting 5 he has put on the floor BUT they lack board strength, short bench=> they WILL contend for the TVC ... Athens has the most depth I've seen in the TVC so far; Belpre WILL be in the TVC mix; Logan Elm is Logan Elm - defense/fundamentally sound/perimeter shooting/will have it's hands full with both Bloom Carroll and Fairfield Union in the MSL; Fairfield Union is my sleeper - IF you didn't know better FU is Logan Elm reincarnated=> defensive pressure, ball handling, fundamentally sound at both ends, scorers on the perimeter - FEW weaknesses; Warren one of the most solid TEAMS I have seen , deep bench, defensive intensity, TEAM on offensive end ( I believe I saw where they had 25 assists in their 99-40 win over Meigs in their opener), this season the Blue has a wealth of talent, inside outside scoring, consistent OUTSIDE the arc scoring that will do away with the offense going on a break for stretches at a time <Portsmouth/Chilli will need to bring their "A" game to beat the Blue>... Huntington has explosive talent in the starting 5 + 1 deep ... Zane Trace has a quality group of starters that includes a BIG in the middle who can play the game - much improved over last season ... Lucasville Valley - the whole team looks like they played football ... lost in 2 OTs to ZT Saturday night BUT the Valley boys are only 2 weeks off the football field and stand at 1-1( big game Tuesday night vs Ironton for LVHS) ... obviously I can't go thru ALL the teams BUT I am excited to see THE BIG BOYS hit the court this week - Portsmouth, Chillicothe, Chesapeake, Ironton, Eastern Brown will get their "games on" in the WEEK that IS the first full week in the 2011-12 season ...

The Elite 8 DID change with the loss by Eastern Brown to Blanchester AND we had major mix ups in the Treehugger & End Table rankings ... as I mentioned I've had the opportunity to see 23 teams on the list ... the committee of one - me - has evaluated some talent levels, adjusted the standings to fit more to what is out there at this point in the campaign - EARLY ON ... more changes will take place as teams get into the 1st, 2nd weeks of the season AND I get to see MORE of the TEAMS Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line .... as they say "Let the beatings begin !!!" ...

Nice work Floyd ... You definitly go over and beyond buddy.

I will be keeping an eye on our Logan sectional and your list:

Logan Elm (No. 4)
Warren (No. 7)

Then you have Fairfield Union, Marietta, Athens and Vinton County all near the top of the Tree Hugger list ... What a tough sectional to be in.

FLOYD ... YOU HAVE TAKEN IN THE ATHENS/VINTON COUNTY game early in the season before (I think it was the year before last) ... We got the same early season match-up in McArthur Friday man - jump on Rt. 93 and head on over!

... Vinton County hosting Athens THAT is a big game for sure ... may just do that 93dog ... definitely penciling that one on the calendar for Friday night the 9th ...

... I was very impressed with Vinton County vs Huntington Saturday ... Chesser is an amazing athlete, jumps out of the gym and can shoot the lights out ... VC is definitely challenged on the boards - lack of a BIG down low hurts them big trying to guard opponents in the paint ... Athens as I posted definitely the deepest squad in the TVC imo ... IF I keep typing I'll talk myself into that trip over on Rt 93 LOL ...

Good start....hard to argue after one game.

I'll be surprised if Huntington is the 8th best team.

I don't know...but I'd definitely pick Warren over Eastern Brown.

Cream will rise.

No need to type Floyd ... The 'hype' is already there ... These two teams have become huge rivals over the last three years ... They have had great games against each other, both are led by outstanding coaches and they both have talent again this year ... Like you said CHESSER is a great athlete, L.B. REMY is tough, JORDAN KIDD is a good player and then a kid like Matt Smallwood ends up with 14 versus Huntington ... The Vikings IMO are the team to beat in the Ohio ... But Athens has the two freshmen, which are really, really fun to watch ... They still have SHARP, SKINNER, STANLEY and MAXSON is working his way back onto the court and 6'4 JARED ELMORE played well versus Morgan.

Its about as good of match-up as you are going to see after looking over the schedules for Friday Floyd ... I better see you there man ... lol

Marietta has a tough game at home 12/9 vs Zanesville. This game should be a good measuring stick game for them to see what they really have.

You technically dropped Miami Trace from the rankings completely, but they definitely lost a ton from last year and will struggle in the SCOL, just thought I'd point that out.

SVC Games for this week:
Friday
Paint Valley @ Adena- Should be a good bounce back game for both. Harrison Herman put in 30 for PV on Saturday(Adena scored 25 on Friday)
Southeastern @ Zane Trace- SE struggled in their opener and ZT showed they can light up the scoreboard(knocking down 10 3s)
Unioto @ Westfall- The Dome is always a tough place to win, especially in a home opener. Both teams defeated quality SCOL opponents this weekend.
Piketon @ Huntington- Big game in Knockemstiff, Huntington showed what they had against a tough VC squad, while Piketon will be making it's season debut.

All of those should be really good, competitive ballgames.

Saturday
Zane Trace @ Adena
Huntington @ Paint Valley
Southeastern @ Unioto
Piketon @ Westfall

I'd probably have Logan Elm lower to be honest, but I do think the Braves will steadily improve as they get their basketball legs and get going. Interested to see FU when they play LE on Dec. 20.

There are 70 teams I think...he'll get it all soon. Hard to know the record of every team.

Yeah, with that loss Eastern is easily out of the top 8.

I was trying to figure out why phs was adament about Eastern and that's the only reason I found that score. The Highland County Press website is probably the best place to find SHL scores quickly, their sports editor does a GREAT job of keeping things updated and a great job getting articles on most games featuring the local teams(Leesburg, Lynchburg, Hillsboro, McClain, Whiteoak, as well as Southern State) all while the Chillicothe Gazette has 2-3 sports writers and can barely cover one game a night(hmmm)

... daniC ... I didn't even see where Eastern Brown was playing over the weekend BUT as I92 posted there are only about 70 teams out there to find scores for LOL ... I have I believe 66 listed on the rankings - I should figure out which ones I don't have listed ... Miami Trace is one of them - I will put them back on this week ... not sure who else is missing - Miller is another one ... the others ?????
