Went to an interesting basketball game last night which ended with a 5 point home win.
Some game Facts:
Home team 9-19 from free throw line 4 total team fouls 1 each quarter 1 in last minute of the game because they had 4 to give.
Visiting team 1-2 from the foul line 19 team fouls 2 or 3 when they were trying to stop the clock

Fun fact. Referees don’t care about the foul count. When someone fouls they call it. So don’t foul so much

First, I agree most referees don't care about the foul count. They do their best to call the game.
Facts of life.
How a referee calls a game can have a significant impact on the outcome. Allow extra physical contact? Call the game tight? How referees "manage" a game. Also, there are times when referees exhibit a bias. Again, just the cards that are dealt. But I believe most often a lopsided foul count is up to the players, and nothing nefarious with respect to officials.

The free throw numbers and foul difference are pretty eye-catching, but I agree it usually comes down to how the teams play. Sometimes the refs call it tight, sometimes they let things go, and that can swing the whole flow of the game.
