South Webster 57
Fairland 51 a final

... for me, THIS matchup was THE game to see in the Spartan Classic Saturday ... I felt Fairland had "the game" to push South Webster to BE what most of us thought/think they should be - force the Jeeps to play D, force the Jeeps to get out , get up and down the floor both offensively & defensively, force the Jeeps to "show if they had maturity/patience" at the offensive end ... Fairland IS one of the top teams, programs in the SE District - have been for the 16 seasons that Coach Speed has been at the helm ... if you don't bring your "A" game you can be out of a game in a hurry - which goes both ways in this one - as South Webster can put you away early with the weapons they bring to the court ... with all of that said, when you have 2 quality TEAMS playing each other it usually isn't a blowout , it usually comes down to possessions, single possessions that are the difference in the game - an empty possession or 2, a possession where a bucket is nullified by a player control foul then goes the other direction for points, a possession where a team has a fastbreak with numbers in their favor that ends in a turnover - no shot on goal ... possessions that in the end turn out to "each be like gold" as the horn goes off signally the end of the final 8 minutes ... South Webster 57 Fairland 53 a final ...

... the Jeeps have arguably THE player in the SE District in 6-7 Eli Roberts - size/length/scores inside or outside/ handles the ball/can take a defender off the dribble/posts up/ hits the mid-range jumper/hits the 3 ball /delivers dimes ... ALL of this goes into an opponent having to come up with a game plan - What can we take away? let HIM get his and take away as much of the rest of the team as possible? take away HIM , see if you can limit what the rest of the team can do ? problem is HIM has the tools to get HIS from anywhere on the court, HIM finds the open man to get THEM involved - tough matchup no matter what strategy is taken ... Eli Roberts makes South Webster arguably a top 1,2,3 team in the SE District no matter the division ... oh yeah, there IS a "rest of the team" factor - Tyler Sommer, Dylan Shupert, Jack Timothy can play an any team in the SE district ... Christian White, Brock Campbell are perfect role players for this TEAM - willing to just "play their roles" not do more than they are asked to do within what the TEAM needs and although SW played 7 Owen Mault - a starter on the perimeter - hasn't played in a number of games due to injury ... the Jeeps are a solid, 1-8 rotation team with a "HIM" that makes the Jeeps scary good in D4 or ANY division ...

... the opening quarter had Tyler Sommer draining a triple (4pts in the qtr) ... Eli Roberts did "HIM" things - getting 7pts and Dylan Shupert added a transition 2pter for the Jeeps scoring ... for Fairland senior PG Chase Allen got to the rim for 2pts and added a medium range jumper - 4pts in the period ... Will Davis nursing an ankle injury got to the rim for 2 and Keegan Smith added a driving 2pter in the paint for FHS ... outside of the point differential the key stat was South Webster turning the Dragons over 5 times in the quarter while coughing up the rock 0 times in the opening 8 minutes - 5 more shots on goal for the Jeeps or 5 less opportunities for the Dragons ... South Webster 13 Fairland 8 after 1 ... as the 2nd period unfolded it looked like Roberts was going to be able to "get his" as the 6-7 junior added a quarter opening 3 pointer and 2 more deuces in the period (7pts/14 in the half) ... off the bench 6-3 Jack Timothy netted 9 on 4 putback buckets at the offensive end , Brock Campbell added a transition 2pts/Dylan Shupert with a 2 point bucket gave the Jeeps a 20-14 2nd quarter scoring advantage ... Chase Allen continued to find the bottom of the net as the FHS PG added a 3 ball/7pts in the qtr ... running mate on the perimeter junior Brody Buchanan added his own trey and a pair of 2 pointers (7pts) ... Fairland was 2/8 in the period from three and 2/10 for the half ... South Webster 33 Fairland 22 at the half ... in the 3rd quarter Fairland whether by design or just by playing solid D on anyone not named Roberts - held the Jeeps scoreless in the 3rd OTHER THAN Eli Roberts getting 10 points in the qtr on his own ball .... as a team in the 3rd the Jeeps went 0/5 from behind the arc , Fairland forced 3 SW turnovers with one being taken to the rim for Dragon points ... Chase Allen matched the Roberts scoring with his 2nd trey of the game and 2/2 from the line (11points in the period) Will Davis and Noah Marcum each netted a 2pointer as the Dragons for the 2nd qtr in a row took care of the ball only 1 turnover in the period getting back in the game with a 15-10 advantage in the qtr ... South Webster 43 Fairland 37 after 3 ... possessions - the ball in your hands, those ( possessions) in the opening quarter are as valuable as those in the final quarter yet when you look at the final 8 minutes EACH possession just seems MORE valuable - or maybe it's just they are just MORE IMPORTANT as they draw you closer if you convert or they stop an opponent from extending a lead or maybe they either keep momentum going or send it to the other end of the court ... Fairland outscored SW in the 4th 16-14 ... not enough to get the W ... at 4:03 on the game clock the Dragons had whittled the score down to a 48-44 South Webster advantage ... Brody Buchanan had drained a trey to open the quarter ... Roberts with 2 points in the paint and a trey of his own gave SW 48-40 lead ... back to back buckets from Allen and Marcum ... 48-44 South Webster ... Timothy with a bucket in the paint ... 50-44 Jeeps ... 2:21 on the clock ... Dragon drive and a bucket/foul called - player control foul against FHS - what could have gone the other way making it 50-46 "and one" to make it 1 possession game was not - instead going the other way - key possessions ... at :52.3 on the clock the Dragons trailing 50-47 following a Chase Allen 3 ball, steal Dragons 3 on 1 break - turnover Fairland ... possessions ... Jack Timothy added 2 pts in the paint, Campbell 1/2 from the line ... an Allen 3 pointer ... 53-50 SW :26.9 on the clock ... the Jeeps finished it off at the FT line 57-50 with Chase Allen hitting his 3rd trifecta of the quarter make the final South Webster 57 Fairland 53 a final ...

This was the first game I didn’t know if Webster would come away with the dub or not. Fairland is good always has been. Very proud as a bystander that Eli has became a man amongst the boys and really utilized his size in the paint this year instead of jacking up 20 threes a game.

Hate to say it but at one point this game could’ve been a 20 point spread. Gotta finish those buckets at the rim. Couple slow games for T Sommer but he’ll get that fire back.

Looking forward to Tuesday. VC comes to town

Great recap Pfloyd! It was a very good game to watch and appreciate you always repping our area schools.

As Swanker said, i thought at one point SW may pull away and win by 10+ but the second half turned into a dogfight and the play of Roberts was just to much. Kudos to SW and Roberts, I’ll root for them the rest of the year.

I will add that the SW fans were quite nice to our kids lol. Several said a group of them talked to them through the game and were pleasant and always joking with them. That’s always nice to hear!!

pfloyd: great rundown as always! Webster starting to have that look of a team that can make a run to State. Roberts putting up all-state numbers. And they obviously well-coached with Persin and Fenton on the bench. Upcoming matchups with Minford and Burg going to be fun to watch.*

art_vandelay, from the Cheap Seats my personal impression is that Coach Persin's handprint is all over this years Jeeps TEAM ... patience on the offensive end, maturity on the court in shot selection, making the extra pass - looking to find "THE" shot no matter who gets the points ... solid at the defensive end - defense within the defensive scheme - ALL traits of Coach Persin coached TEAMS ...
