It's time to start thinking Hoops Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line for 2023-24

Post by pfloyd »

... I just spent the evening going through my napkin stats from last season, the post season rosters I have from last season, I looked at the "teams that were youngin's last season and should be improved THIS season ... I've gone through everything to come up with my "working copy of Pfloyd's Preseason Elite 8" ...

Some more info to take into account:

Jackson ... ended the season playing 4 freshmen getting big time minutes Charlie Woodard, Ryan Seimetz (started pretty much all season) , Stephen Jenkins, Bodhi Wolford ... will have Boston Campbell, Zander Ervin, Dillan Delong returning as the veteran seniors next winter ...

Unioto ... will return a bunch from a rotation of Zeke Schobelock/Kb Perkins, Newton Hoops, Blake Hoops, Blake Fitch freshman pg this season,, Jordan Perkins, Ashton Crace, Connor Dollison,Caden Cutright ... 18+ wins in 2023-24

Warren ... from this past season the Warriors had a roster of 10 sophs, 1 jr, 1 senior ... a 9-10 man rotation ... next season led by lone senior Trent Taylor (6-6) ... PG/SG Julian Stadelman, bigs Chase Lupardus, Hayden Wells, shooting guard Connor Barry, Nick Cressey, Jacob Sealey, Tyson Cochran, AJ Criss ... throw in the outstanding coaching staff - instant top 8 ...

Vinton County ... Coach Nj Kight had an outstanding freshman season at VC taking over for legendary coach Coach Combs ... a couple of the best bigs on the same team in the TVC and SEOhio in Ashton Allman/Owen Hire ... Cobra Sharp (pg) ... one of the best players in SEOhio in shooting guard/swing forward Garrett Brown ... rotation players from this past season - Ashton Tritipo/Parker Shonborn, Matt Hembree ... top 8 in the preseason

OVC teams on my list of teams to watch that were young last season ...

Fairland ...Coach Speed's Dragons weren't the Dragons of years past - but they weren't bad ... within a buzzer beating 3 pointer by Caleb Lovely (SP) of advancing to the District finals at the Convo ... outstanding guards returning -still youngsters with lots of varsity experience after last season - Chase Allen, Brody Buchanan, Will Davis - great group to build around for 23-24 ... add to the mix Cliff Fransen/Trevor Lauder ... I'm keeping an eye the Dragons

Chesapeake ... Coach Ater had the Panthers ready for every game last season, boasted being the only team to beat South Point in Ohio until the post season Regional Final ... Dannie Maynard, Braxton Oldaker, Jacob Skeens, Phillip Thacker - freshman this past season ... Caleb Cox/Camron Shockley - grade levels ... the record will improve from this season for sure ...

South Point ... Regional finalist - I don't need to say much more ... Caleb Lovely - one of the best players in Southern Ohio at 6-3 the jr/senior to be can do it all offensively ... Lovely 6-3 will be joined by Xathan Haney 6-3, Carter Smith 6-3, Jackson Childers 6-6, Braydon Hanshaw 6-3 ... deep run this season ... top 8 personnel

Eastern Pike ... youngsters last season, outstanding game vs Federal Hocking in the post season ... Tucker Leist/Jace White/Brewer Tomlison as a freshmen big man this past season will get bigger and better in the paint /Teagan Werner /Dylan Morton were all in the rotation ... experienced gained will turn into W's in 23-24 ...

Trimble
... 22-23 all new starting lineup for Coach Caldwell ... all juniors last season, all got varsity experience ... Brandon Burdette/Kaden Kempton/ Levi Weber/ Michael Clark/ Cole Wright/Tyler Hill soph/Chase Patton soph ... bounce-back season for the Tomcat

----------

... South Webster will be much improved with Eli Roberts BACK in the fold , add to that the addition of Coach Persin courtside for the Jeeps, good returning cast of players with senior foreign exchange student 6-3 size and length in Jack Timothy ... improving on the 14-8 record of last season is definitely within reach as SW has upped it's schedule - playing in 3 classics, among the 3 is the Spartan Classic at Alexander High School - Coach Persin's Jeeps will take on annual OVC contender Fairland on the neutral court at the Alley ... potential lineup includes

6-3 Tyler Sommer (All District) ... sr
6-3 Jack Timothy ... sr
6-1 Brock Campbell (returns after a year off the hardwood) ... sr
6-7 Eli Roberts ... jr
6-0 Dylan Shupert ... jr
5-11 Owen Mault ... jr
5-9 Christian White ... jr
5-10 Hunter Bernard ... soph

Portsmouth Notre Dame ... the Titans lost at the Convo vs Federal Hocking after losing then sophomore Landon Barbarits to a severe ankle injury ... Barbarits will be back- now a junior , along with starter jr. Aaryn Bradford, outstanding guard/forward sr. Cody Metzler, jr. Myles Phillips, so. Connie Thomas ... any team will miss 6-7 size that Dominic Sparks brought to the table - but 3 of 5 starters ... 5 of the first 7 players from last years Convo squad returning is a great nucleus to build on for 2023-24 in the Land of the Titans...

... any size move into Notre Dame ???

Marietta Tigers - Coach Gardner and Coach Warner have brought the intensity, discipline back to the hardwood in Marietta... Coach Austin Gardner's Tigers will make the D2 side of Hoops in Washington County NOT just a Warren Warrior showcase ( MHS split the home and home last season putting it on WHS 67-46 at the Tiger's den in Marietta) ... MHS lost 2 starters off that club (AJ Graham & Isaac Koast) to graduation but return experience, size, and quickness at both ends of the floor :

Returning starters:
Elija Lieras-Kelly ... 5-11 ...sr
Izak Krighton ... 6-5 ... sr
Alex Kendall ... 6-7 ... sr

Seth Britton ... 6-0 ... jr
Landon Koscho ... 5-10 ... jr

Portsmouth Trojans ... Coach Lisath has returned to his roots in P'town - that in itself puts PHS back into ANY conversation of hoops preseason in Southern Ohio ... I can't do any better than what Trojan historian , trojandave, has done in keeping us up to speed on the Trojans :

DeAndre Berry........6-2 SR......17 PPG last season......little more than 300 points short of 1,000
Donovan Breech......6-3 SR
Isaiah Lewis...........5-9 SR
Noah Livingston......6-2 SR
Luke Stine............6-5 JR

Off the bench:

Jayden Brewer.......6-0 JR
Landon Malone......5-8 SO
Dontavion Parker....5-9 SO
Leelind Scurlock....5-9 SO
Marquez Locklear...5-9 SO
Olynshay McKinley..6-4 SO
Tayshawn Henderson...5-8 SO

... the transfer portal has been very very good in P'town & the Trojans :

LeMarcus Parker transferred from New Boston and is a junior. He's about 6-0, and has a nice all around game, especially his handles. He will be a great fit for Coach Lisath's run and press style.

Marquez Locklear back at Portsmouth. He is a sophomore who played 8th grade hoops for PJHS and I felt was the best player on the team. He transferred to Columbus his freshman year but is back now...

Malachi Loper, who played soccer and basketball at Clay HS, has transferred to PHS for the 2023-24 school year. Clay discontinued its soccer program, so Malachi enrolled at Portsmouth to play both sports. He is a junior, and will play guard for the Trojans. He is fully eligible to play this school year. He will be a good scoring option which the Trojans are in need of.

He had a very good sophomore season at Clay, and was awarded the following:

Team Offensive Player of the Year
Team MVP
Southern Ohio Conference 1st team
Southeastern District 3rd team
Southeastern District Sports Writers Honorable Mention

Malachi averaged 17.6 PPG last season as a sophomore, and just over 11 PPG as a freshman.

The "committee of one" had a very productive day ... have what looks like a a good 1st ranking by division (2,3,4) ... going to let it sit, come back to it, see if it still looks good - then mesh the 3 divisions into Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SEOhio - Preseason Editon for the 2023-24 season ... D2 has some excellent teams, the deepest of the 3 divisions this coming season ... D3 looks to show quality at the top end ... D4 looks to be the weaker of the 3 divisions this season - still quality at the top ... BUT as usual we don't know what each team has coming up from the JV's, how the transfer portal plays out ... with the mix of D2, D3, & D4's looks like the pfloyd tour for 2023-24 will be covering ALL of the directions coming out of Hocking County from Washington County, to the OVC teams along the river, covering the Appalachian Highway corridor , Up Rte 23 to the Chillicothe area back over Rt 22 toward Lancaster ... fun times! I already have the Clash at the Coliseum at Warren HS penciled in, the Spartan Classic at the Alley, Alexander HS ... will there be the ZT Tip Off Classic this season at Zane Trace? this one has been my first hoops of the season over the years ... Have to see if the Roundtown Holiday tournament overlaps with Warren's 2 Day event or Alexander's classic - I enjoyed going to Circleville last season ... then in January - the Dave Young Classic at North Adams - a great day of hoops the 2nd week in January (Jan 13th I believe) ...

Getting Brock Campbell back for his senior year is HUGE for the Jeeps.
Also assuming Jacob McGraw and Carson Corriell are in the lineup somewhere (hopefully)

It would appear not to be a total rebuild year for new Logan coach Rich Bell. Could see 2 or 3 freshmen on the Varsity. I think they lost 90% of their scoring from 2022-23. But Logan does return Jackson Stimmel (6-1 guard) Sawyer Magdich (6-1 Guard) is back and Coen Maynard (6-4 wing) and soph Owen Bell (6-3 guard). They all played huge minutes last year. Logan lost 7 seniors, and not sure who else at this point will be on the varsity roster

pfloyd: Thanks for the pub on the Trojans. What will be most intriguing about Portsmouth will be the style of play that Coach Lisath wants to employ. 94 feet on defense, pushing the ball relentlessly up the court, and rotating at least 10 players. Hearkens back to the late 80's when the late great Joe Suboticki was at the helm, doing the same things that Jeff wants to do.

The Portsmouth community is excited for hoops season.......boys and girls.

I think the FAC will be pretty competitive this season. In my opinion, Miami Trace Jackson and Washington will be battling for the crown. Pfloyd gave a pretty good rundown of Jackson, they also will add a couple of talented freshman this year that may have a chance to contribute early. CJ Crabtree is a name to consider. The experience of Ervin and Campbell, along with the young sophomores who were baptized by fire last season will make Jackson a league contender this year. I predict the Ironman will win between 16-18 games this season.

Miami Trace loses Andrew Guthrie and Isaiah Reisinger but returns a solid core and will see the return of 6'6" senior Garrett Guess who broke his arm and did not play last season. Returning starters include 6'2" Austin Boedeker, 6'4" Brady Armstrong, 6'2" Bryson Osborne and 6'4" Coleden May. Sophomores 6'0" Grant Guess, 6'5" Adam Guthrie, and 6'2" Connor Napier will be in the rotation along with juniors 6'2" Trey Robinette and 6'0" Skye Salyers. Incoming freshmen 6'0" Anthony Huffer and 5'11" Julian Baker are two freshman to watch over the next few years for the Panthers and will likely play JV and possibly dress varsity this year. This will be one of the deepest and most athletic teams the Panthers have had in several years in my opinion. They will have 5-6 guys who could score double figures on any given night. I think the Panthers can win 20 games this season.

Washington loses the FAC and District POY in Tanner Lemaster, along with role players Raleigh Haithcock and Brayden May. The Blue Lions return starters 6'0" John Wall, 6'1" Garrett Rickman, and 6'5" Isaiah Haithcock. Senior 6'4" Gabe Tayese will be in the rotation, along with juniors 5'10" Will Miller, 6'1" Jacob Lindsey, and 6'6" Gage Merritt, and sophomore 6'6" Noah Haithcock. The Blue Lions will not be very deep this season but will be long and athletic with some great shooters. They will lean heavily on Haithcock, Wall, and Rickman to carry the load this year. I see Washington winning 15-17 games this year.

McClain could be a surprising team this season with the addition of Mike Noszka at the helm and junior transfer 6'4" Micah Parks who was with Washington at the beginning of last year and transferred early in the season. They also return seniors 6'3" Drake Stapleton, 6'1" Seth Weller, 6'2" Andrew Potts, and 6'1" Jayden Allison, juniors 6'2" Owen Sykes, 6'0" Zane Adams, and 5'10" Riley Cummins. McClain will benefit from Noszka's coaching immediately as he was a great hire in my opinion. I think the Tigers could win 12-14 games this season.

Hillsboro loses a big presence in the post in Bryce Parsons but returns seniors 6'2" Dorian Stewart and 6'2" Steven Kibler, junior point guard 5'9" Tate Davis, junior 6'0" Nic Burns, and junior 6'1" Brayden Hunter. Freshman 6'0" Jackson Howland, son of head coach Josh Howland, will be in the rotation right away and is an exceptional ball player and will be fun to watch over the next couple years. The Indians will be young this season but could surprise Jackson, Washington, and Miami Trace on any given night. Hillsboro will be just a tick over .500 this year in my opinion, winning 11-13 games.

Chillicothe lost several starters from last year, including Aaron Valentine, Tre King, Aiden Spaulding, and Mason Sibberell. They return seniors 5'11" Cayden Lee, 6'3" Caden Eblin, junior 5'10" Juan Miller, and sophomore 6'2" Cooper Stoneking. The Cavaliers will struggle this season in my opinion and will be towards the bottom of the league. I predict they win 8-10 games this season.

Miami Trace is gonna be a handful for teams all year....they travelled up here to Warren for the summer shootout and walked away as the champs in the tourney beating the Warriors by (3) i think, Warren had beaten them earlier in the day....Miami has like you said 5-6 true scoring threats and they play fundamental "D" also....we will be traveling to Miami Trace for a scrimmage on November 11th...that will be a nice early season ease into competitive games...lol

Fortunately for Miami Trace... Bryson Osborne is a senior this year and did not graduate. Grant Guess has grew a bit. I'm guessing 6'3. Coach Ackley loaded up their schedule this year to get them ready for the tournament (I assume). Nice write up. Thanks.

Thanks for clarifying that! That's even more firepower for them. They will be a bear this season.

Do not be surprised when Waverly cruises over .500 this year, multiple transfers, good freshmen class and return Nibert, Haynes , Carroll, Morton out of the starting line up.
