Trimble 66 a final

... Rivalry games - those throw out the records, don't look at the rosters, matchups on the court are won not necessarily by the best athlete but by good players who give more than the other guy in the moment - winning THIER own game within THE game ... Southeast Ohio has rivalry games everywhere you turn ... Athens/Nelsonville ... Warren/Fort Frye ... Unioto/Zane Trace ... Wheelersburg vs anyone they play ... Trimble/Federal Hocking in the TVC Hocking ranks right up there with the best of them on the hardwood ... coming into last nights game it was hard to throw out the fact the Lancers of Coach Thompson and Coach Tolson had reeled off 17 straight wins since opening the season 0-2 ... hard to ignore a team that has 5 players averaging close to double figures each and a couple close to the 20 ppg mark ... Federal Hocking was/is on a roll ... Trimble came into the game young, not a senior to be found on the roster - entering this season Cole Wright/Michael Clark had the only varsity experience ... 9-7 in a rebuilding/find all of the pieces for NEXT year season ... BUT Trimble also comes into the season with one of the best coaches courtside in high school hoops - Coach Howie Caldwell ... young team/little experience/size disadvantaged? the expectations are STILL the same - get the W ... last night's contest was going to be a "barometer" type game for the Tomcats - "Where do we stand as a TEAM going into the post season?" ... last night Trimble, Coach Caldwell got some answers even in an "on the scoreboard" lopsided final ... Federal Hocking 81 Trimble 66 a final ...

... the opening quarter was a tightly contested, physical 1st period of action ... Michael Clark opening the scoring for the Tomcats draining a 3 ball ( 1 of 2 in the quarter for Clark) ... while the Lancers would open there scoring with shots in the paint as each of the seniors Billy Ward/Caden Chapman/Iden Miller/Scotty Balch closed at the rim ... quarter number one laid open the script for the game as well - Federal Hocking taking 11 shots from behind the arc (3/11) ... Trimble almost matching the FH triples ONLY in the turnover category as the FH on ball pressure turned Trimble over 9 times in the opening qtr of play ...between the 3 balls being launched and the turnovers at the other end of the floor - there was a good/hotly contested basketball game taking place ! Trimble scoring - Michael Clark led the way for Trimble 10 pts/Kaden Kempton 2/Cole Wright in the paint with a putback 2pts/ Chayse Henry off the bench for 2 pts / Levi Weber went 2/2 from the FT line to wrap up the Tomcats scoring in the first ... for Fed Hock - season stats show good balance in scoring - the opening quarter bared this out as all 5 starters contributed on the napkin stat sheet - Billy Ward 5pts with one of the 3 FH triples in the qtr/ Caden Chapman 5pts with a trey/Scotty Balch 5pts wth a 3 ball included / Tariq Cottrill 2pts & Iden Miller 2pts ... a high scoring quarter by both teams ... Federal Hocking 19 Trimble 18 after 1 ... The Lancers of Coach Thompson are blessed with talent across the board, role players who KNOW their roles - none better than PG jr Tariq Cottrill, the more I see TC play the faster/quicker he gets LOL ... offensively can get his shot on the perimeter, get into the paint, to the rim ... what amazes the most is his ability to rebound, he is just quicker off the floor than anyone out there ... in the 2nd Cottrill took over the game - as FH forced 10 Trimble turnovers (19 for the half) , of the 10 turnovers Cottrill converted 5 into points going the other way for FH ... TC's personal napkin stat line in the 2nd qtr ALONE - 17 points in the qtr (19 for the half), 5 transition buckets in the qtr, 3 triples ... FH as a team 5/13 from 3 point land in the qtr... 8/24 in the half ... Iden Miller 6 pts/with a 3 / Scotty Balch added his 2nd 3 ball of the half/ surprisingly Andrew Airhart was held to 0 fgs in the first 2 qtrs picked up 2/2 from the line in the 2nd ... Trimble not getting 19 opportunities due to turnovers to come up with points in the opening half of play/ couldn't match the FH scoring in the 2nd ... Levi Weber 6pts in the qtr/ Cole Wright continued to battle on the boards in the paint 4pts at the rim/ Clark added 2pts and Tyler Hill 2 points off the Trimble bench ... with the South Webster team and coaching staff in the stands taking in the game, the rout was on ... right?! ... Federal Hocking 47 Trimble 32 at the half ... Federal Hocking with a 15 point lead or Trimble with a 15 deficit? Rivalry game ... in my many years of watching Howie coached Trimble basketball, one thing I have learned is that there is NO quit in a Howie coached TEAM, not part of the athlete mentality at Trimble ... a high school basketball game is 32 minutes on the clock - we give 100% for 32 minutes no matter what the scoreboard reads - end of story ... coming out after intermission - Trimble attacked, figuratively threw blows to the tune of a 19-2 run to open the 3rd period ... led by Michael Clark's 14 points in the qtr, applying their own pressure/forcing 7 Fed Hock turnovers - 3 of which went to the house for points off of steals ... Clark dropped 2/3 triples ... as the qtr opened FH led 47-32 8:00 on the clock ... at 6:30 on the clock the scoreboard read FH 47 Trimble 41 ... by 3:35 Trimble had taken the lead 51-49 ... never give up (because quitting is not an option) ... the rout was now a game ... Coach Thompson and Coach Tolson hadn't guided the Lancers to 17 straight W's by accident, the Lancers had played vs one the best non-conference schedules they have played in recent memory - close games vs difficult opponents - Caldwell, Paint Valley, Marietta, Alexander - they'd taken blows before ... SEOhio kids are just made different - you take the body punches, you come off the ropes ... in the final 3:35 of the 3rd period the Lancers got off the ropes, giving the blows instead of taking them ...outscoring the Tomcats 17-4 ... Tariq Cottrill 8pts/ Caden Chapman 6pts/ Andrew Airhart knocked down his only 3 of the game 5pts ... for Trimble Clark 14/Wright 5pts/2 points each from Weber & Kempton ... Trimble won the quarter 23-19 ... after the 19-2 run to open the 3rd , the THS 10 turnovers allowed FH to right the ship, get separation ... Federal Hocking 66 Trimble 55 after 3 ... after ALL of the excitement in the 3rd period - the 4th and final quarter was just your typical high school game ... 15-10 scoring led by Fed Hock, turnovers 2-4 in favor of Fed Hock, instead of putting up double digits 3's as they had in the first 3 qtrs - the Lancers kept the ball in the house taking but 6 treys (0-6) ... each team traded buckets throughout the period ... 4:32 Fed Hock 74 Trimble 59 ... 2:08 Federal Hocking 76 Trimble 61 ... lost in all of the excitement of the rivalry ... Federal Hocking with a W getting the outright TVC Hocking 'ship title ... having beat Vinton County it would make the Lancers the true Champions of the TVC in 2022-23 ... last night was Senior Night in Lancer Land - the last regular season game at McInturf Gymnasium (a couple of post season games at FH for sure still to come) ... when the dust settled on this one ALL of the graduating seniors had made their mark with a napkin stat line as Thomas Schwartzel came off the FH bench to knockdown a 2 pointer for the Lancers ... 4th qtr. scoring for Trimble - Weber 2/Clark 2/Wright 3/Henry 2 and freshmen Luke Osborne added 2 pts ... for the Lancers of Fed Hock Chapman 4/Cottrill 3/Miller 2/ Airhart 2 for 2 from the line/ Ward 2 and Thomas Schwartzel finished off the Lancer scoring with 2pts on a putback bucket ... Federal Hocking 81 Trimble 66 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Trimble

TOs ... 33
PnP ... 16 fgs/ 32 points in the paint
PnT ... 6 fgs/ 12 points in transition
Pbk ... 6 fgs/ 12 points on putback buckets

... obviously you can't have 33 turnovers and beat a now 18-2 team ... Trimble showed they CAN play with the likes of Federal Hocking - for stretches... their own defensive pressure brought them all the way back from a 15 point deficit to take the lead -but having ballhandlers that can break the pressure is a must ... pressure forces teams to make decisions with the ball, when it is full court pressure it forces players who are not used to making decisions MAKE DECISIONS WITH THE BALL - that's what Fed Hock does so well - pressure at ALL 5 positions ... youth, lack of varsity experience ... the entire Trimble roster returns for 2023-24 ... a barometer game last night? Trimble showed they can play with the best when they can get the ball into the offensive end - if they can get into their offense/get shots they can play with a lot of teams in the post season ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Federal Hocking ...

Scoring ... Tariq Cottrill 30, Caden Chapman 15, Iden Miller 10, Andrew Airhart 9, Scotty Balch 8, Billy Ward 7, Thomas Schwartzel 2

Pbk ... 1 fg/ 2 points on putback buckets

... 18 straight W's ... 18-2 ... one of the best first 6 group of players I've seen on any TEAM in SEOhio ... this is not just from last night - I've seen Coach Thompson/Coach Tolson's Lancers in-person 5 times this season ... the 44 three point attempts were A LOT ... 9 threes made was without a good shooting night from Andrew Airhart - imo the best 3 point shooter of the ball I've seen all season - AA with only making 1 trey last night ... Tariq Cottrill is one of the best ALL AROUND PG's in SEOhio - period - scoring at the rim, in the paint, beyond the arc ... defensive pressure , rebounding, keeping the ball alive ... he is as good as anyone I've seen if not better ... Caden Chapman - as hardnosed of a blue collar player as you will find who contributes at both ends ... nice midrange and in shooter as well ... fun TEAM to watch ! still with a really nice barometer type game coming up! - the Lancers travel to Marietta Tuesday night to take on a really good, gaining confidence Marietta Tiger team who want to do nothing more than get payback for the loss to the Lancers at McInturf a couples ago ...

I read all that and thought someone should send flowers to Howie. I think I notice the sweet smell of a blossoming bromance.
