Post by OVCFan1 »

How does the league shape up for next season? Who loses what and who is returning for each team next Season?

Chesapeake - (8-6)

Gallia - (7-6)

Portsmouth - (5-9)

PG-Dryzen Mullens, Jr. 6'4" Forward-Hunter Staton, Jr. Elijah Dillon, Jr. Braxton Horn, Gavin Gipson. Jr. Landon Davis They also will be bringing up a very talented group of current 8th graders... The Trojans will lose Dariyone Bryant, Cooper Maxie & Donovan Carr off last years team. As well as Amare Johnson & Drew Roe who were both injured and would’ve made Portsmouth much better. Portsmouth does return a lot though. Kenny Sanderlin, Devin Lattimore, Deandre Berry, Tyler Duncan, Reade Pendeleton, Luke Stine, LeVaughn Cobb, Noah Livingston, Norris McKinley will all be back. Some of those guys were JV this past season and may be asked to step up on the varsity roster. I’m unsure if there’s anyone notable coming up from Jr high who may see varsity time, or anyone else from the JV squad I failed to mention. I’m hoping to see the Trojans have a nice bounce back season after a rough up and down year this year.

PTrojan59 gave a good rundown of next year's Trojans (6-8 in the OVC)......Norris McKinley, though, quit the JV squad for unknown reasons midway through the season. Right now, 6-1 Kenny Sanderlin, 6-0 Devin Lattimore, 5-10 DeAndre Berry, and 5-11 LeVaughn Cobb will most likely make up 4 of the starters, with the 5th spot wide open. Could be 5-10 Tyler Duncan, 5-10 Reade Pendleton, 6-2 Luke Stine, 6-1 Noah Livingston, 5-9 Isaiah Lewis or 6-2 Donnovan Breech. Lewis, Stine, Livingston, and Breech will be coming up from the JV squad. Depending on which way Coach Collins wants to go, Stine and Livingston gives the Trojans some size in the paint, while Lewis, Pendleton, Duncan or Breech could fill that 5th spot. PG will be probably be Lattimore, Lewis, or Pendleton. Duncan and Breech could be the 2 guard. The two biggest issues facing the Trojans will be ballhandling and rebounding. PHS must cut down on turnovers and be able to at least be even on the boards. The biggest assets for PHS will be athleticism, perimeter shooting, and being able to play fast. PHS is coming off a season in which it was the highest scoring team in 20 years (66 PPG).

The biggest loss from this past year is Daryionne Bryant......his scoring and athleticism will be a huge hole to fill, and I think individually he is the biggest single loss since Kendal Reynolds in 2017. Right now, there isn't any incoming freshmen who will likely see varsity PT, but in 2 years there are several guards who will be play varsity.

The OVC in 2022-23 will be just as competitive as it was in 2021-22, but Fairland has to be the favorite until someone can prove they can topple the Dragons. Last season saw FHS lose more conference games than in any season since 2015. 5 of the 8 teams finished above .500 in conference play last season, and it could exceed that next year.

OVCFan1: Your Hornets should be improved, and I know there is one thing that is a constant about CG basketball......probably no one in the OVC plays harder than Coal Grove. Coach Vanderhoof may not have a lot of basketball talent, but there's no shortage of effort. He gets his kids to play hard every game. I agree with you about Owen Johnson. He is a talented player who could possibly make first team OVC at season's end.

I'd say Braden Schreck is the best true freshmen in the OVC

Hate to hear that about Norris. I didn’t end up catching a JV game after the first few. Totally agree with you TD. The Trojans need to cut down on those turnovers. At times I seen a lot of sloppy passing, just trying to force the ball into spots it shouldn’t be. Rebounding as you mentioned will also be key. Not a ton of height so working with what they have will be key. I think the Trojans could have a nice season. I look for Sanderlin to really take over. At times I felt this past season he could’ve taken games over and he didn’t. Kenny isn’t selfish that’s for sure. Hoping for a good summer from the boys.

Jumper45: Schreck of Ironton is a very good player, and definitely was one of the top freshmen in the OVC. He had 2 good games vs. the Trojans. He and Owen Johnson of Coal Grove were probably the 2 best freshmen in the conference.

It's still summer, but I'll project Portsmouth's starting 5:

SR 6-1 Kenny Sanderlin.......16 PPG, led the team in rebounds, assists, and steals
JR 6-0 Devin Lattimore.......20 points vs. South Point in last year's sectional final
JR 5-11 DeAndre Berry........had several games over 20 points, including 1 game with 8 made 3's
JR 5-10 LeVaughn Cobb.......leading scorer off the JV team last season
JR 5-9 Isaiah Lewis............PG on JV team last season

Also possible starting: SR 6-0 Tyler Duncan.....3 point specialist
Also in rotation: 6-1 JR Noah Livingston, 6-3 SO Luke Stine, 6-3 JR Donnovan Breech

More athletic team than last season......main issues will be size, rebounding, and replacing 17 PPG by Dariyonne Bryant.

Projected finish: top half of the OVC, winning season overall, could advance to district

Need 8 wins for Coach Eugene Collins to get 200, need 13 wins to reach 1,500 in school history

It would be awesome if we could get similar team line up information for some of the other OVC teams if possible.

Fairland loses district POY in Aiden Porter. Impossible to make up for that loss, but they return everyone else and this group plays great team ball. Good, fundamentally sound team including 4 starters and the top 2-3 subs.

Projected starters

SR JD Thacker - 6’4” - all district last year. Double figure PPG. Can score inside and out. Should have a big year.

SR Steeler Leep 6’0” or Zion Martin 6’0” - both very physical and good defenders who rebound well. True role players that a team has to have.

Jr Chase Allen - 5’9” - PG who controls the team flow very well. All district last year and double figure PPG and great 3 point shooter.

Jr Will Davis - 6’1” - may best all around athlete in OVC. Has tremendous potential to be one of the best Bball players. Long, rangy defender who can score quickly. Been impressive this summer in games.

So Brody Buchanon 5’9” - came off bench last year and provided offense. Very good scorer/shooter and high Bball IQ. Will have some big games this year as he settles into his role.

Bench - Jr. Bryson Hunt - 6’1” another long rangy guy who is very athletic. Great rebounder and can get buckets with his quickness.

Bench SR. Hunter Lykins - 6’ back to playing after not playing since freshman year. Showed a lot of potential in summer for helping on both ends of floor. Physical defender.

Bench SR. Cole Lucas - 5’10” can fill in at multiple spots. Role player who does anything that’s asked of him. Can hit shots when open and is scrappy.

That’s the top 8-9 from the way it looked this summer barring any kids who play that didn’t come to summer games, which may be a few based on rumors.
