SE District Basketball...Random Thoughts

Post by Ironman92 »

Playing at home vs playing on the road can be a big difference.....and I’m not talking one bit about officiating.

Saturday games after a Friday night league games....upset waiting to happen

Is anyone 100% healthy/full strength? Nope

In a 22 game regular season....with 15-18 year old boys, tough not to get upset!

“Gotta get mine” players cripple a team

If you score 14 points but give up 18 points, your coach isn’t doing his job any better than you are

Parents....fans, society in general....just because you are louder, doesn’t mean you are right

Fans that get more enjoyment out of other teams losing more than their team winning....trending way too strong

Sometimes the better team wins

Sometimes the lesser team plays a great game

It’s ok to be happy for another team/program

Role players sticking with it seems to be trending the wrong way. Not everyone is a shortstop....

If your players on the bench are constantly turning around looking at opposing fans....I bet your team isn’t very good.

“Cool” players aren’t going to make their free throws when it matters most.

Virtually every referee I haven’t seen before has done a very good job IMO.

Student sections aren’t what they used to be and having 40 cheerleaders doesn’t help.

Clap once or twice for the opposing team next game...they’ll do something good to have deserved it.

Sometimes I wonder how far away the stars are.

Sometimes I wonder if my wife will leave me.

Applaud the officials when they are introduced, it might be the only time all game and it is a ridiculously difficult job

Be prepared to pay someone to get into an event. And when you do, don’t give them crap, since they are just volunteering their time

Constantly yelling 3 seconds is not effective

In all seriousness, you summed up the majority of things nicely. Times are different. Participation IS down.

Kids haven't changed but the way kids are handled has changed. The "if you're not going to play a sport you're at least going to get a job" mentality is not as common as it used to be. Too often a kid says "ah, I'm not going to play." How many parents make them do SOMETHING? Lift, a job, train excessively for another sport etc.... Here's the answer -- not many.

When I watch games I try to sit as far away from people as possible.. If you see a strange man hiding in the corner with a notebook taking stats, that's probably me. I can't handle hearing the nonsense spewed from certain fans and it baffles me that many individuals don't realize how foolish they are making themselves look.

Other than that..... I still love the game and watching young men and women compete in SEO. As to how things can change...... well, I'm not sure they can. It would have to be a top-down approach from an administrative perspective and a group of really mature parents that support those decisions.

I always listen carefully when the refs are announced as even the ones I see a lot, I often don’t know/remember their names. Most games so far this year I’ve not been able to hear the announcer or they didn’t announce their names.

Good note on the paying.

It’s ok to pay for parking and overpay for concession items. It all goes to the facilities and making the kids experience the best it can be.

And just because coaches aren’t jumping around, screaming at their players and the officials doesn’t mean they’ve given up or quit on the players.

Coaches have bad games and make mistakes
Refs have bad games and make mistakes
Kids have bad games and make mistakes

Life goes on.
