Special Mention to Paul Walker, who coached Portsmouth in 1945 to a 12-11 record, then went to Middletown and coached the Middies to 5 state championships between 1947-1956. When Walker retired, he was the winningest coach in OHSAA history with 695 wins. That record has been broken since by several coaches, including Richard Kortokrax of Kalida and Joe Petrocelli of Kettering Alter.
Also special mention to Mike Haley, who played on the 1961 State Champions and coached Portsmouth from 1993-1995, compiling a record of 34-30 with 1 district title in 1994. Haley won 4 state championships coaching Dayton Roth and Dayton Dunbar.
All coaches who have ever coached at Portsmouth HS have won a total of 15 state championships, either at Portsmouth or elsewhere.
