Both teams are coming off really bad loses....Athens to NY, and Wellston to DIV Ironton St Joe. I'd normally give the edge to Athens but Wellston seems play pretty well on thier home turf.

The outcome of this one should set a barometer for how the TVC Ohio will finish out.

Coach Derrows record at Wellston is 286-223.
He has coached for 23 full seasons and two partial seasons. He has missed 11 games throughout his career due to illness or suspensions for being ejected and 19 games due to an Ohsaa mandate. He started in 1986 and is the winningest coach in Wellston High School history and has to be in the top 5 all time in total wins in the TVC. He may be the longest tenured coach also. He has had a 30 game home winning streak and also a 14 game overall win streak. He has been named Tvc and District 13 coach of the year on several occasions.
His teams have been ranked in the top ten AP poll on 5 different occasions, He has coached 3 North-South players and he has had numrerous players continue their playing careers in college. He is the Director of the National Hoops Classic and the event has been voted by Street and Smith magazine as one of the top events of its kind. Wellston has played Lebron James, OJ Mayo, Lawerence Funderburke, Bill Walker, and Mike Miller, all current or past NBA players and played Number 1 Oak Hill Academy, Number 2 Chicago Martin Luther King, Number 2 St. Vincent St Mary and defeated Number 17 St. Albans West Virginia. They have won three TVC championships and have been to the Districts 5 times and the District Finals twice. His teams have played in the Bahamas, Florida three times, and have traveled to camps in New York, South Carolina, Indiana, North Carolina. He and his staff have worked the Duke camp on numerous occaisions, and have spoken at such major clinics at Ohio University, Rio Grande and the University of Dayton. He has had his own radio show for over 20 seasons and annually runs the Gold Basketball Camp for kids K-9 during the month of June. he and his staff also offers a free clinic during the summer for area youth on Mon, Wed and Friday mornings. This should answer any questions that you may have. This report was put together by the Wellston Basketball managerial(support) staff.

With some of these predictions, I would not be betting on any horse races any time soon! A very talented young Rockets team beat a very good Athens team! Watch out for these guys for the next few years. Rockets only lose one player for next year!!!! :-D Great win Rockets!

It was a great game to watch and do on TV. Nigel Courts lead all scorers with 19 points. Athens Dean Maffin had 18. The Bulldogs battled back from a 12 point deficit to cut it to 3 at 44-41 and had the ball, but could not get the ball to fall. Athens hit 6 "3's", with Maffin hitting 4 of them, to one for Wellston, but Ousley and Courts were terrific at the basket. Wellston was 19-29 at the foul line and Athens was 9-13. Nice win for the Rockets.

Seriously, good win for the Golden Rockets.

Wellston shot 15 foul shots in the 4th the mojority of them coming when Athens began to foul to save time on The clock. The game was very physical. The rockets played well but could have hot the boards a little better in the second half.
