Our Chillicothe Cavaliers D2 defeats there old (C.O.L.) Central Ohio League foe, the Newark Wildcats D1 .......from the OCC-Ohio Division at the Schott.
Both SEOAL Schools the Chillicothe Cavaliers D2 and the Zanesville Blue Devils D1 who used to be together in the old C.O.L. with Newark, have defeated the Newark Wildcats D1 this year in basketball. I believe the Wildcats are still Zanesville's Natural Rival
In the old (C.O.L.), the Lancaster Golden Gales were Chillicothe's rival. The Cavaliers gave them a welcome back to Hutton Gymnasim this year in a Scrimmage. It really wasn't even a contest. The Cavaliers crushed the Golden Gales.
The Zanesville Blue Devils also defeated the Newark Wildcats in Football this past season, for the first time in a while, after a long dry stretch of defeats at the hands of the Wildcats.
Didn't the Newark Wildcats D1 from the OCC-Ohio Division defeat Canal Winchester D2's awesome B-Ball Team from the MSL-Buckeye Division this year
Great win for Chillicothe
Way to go CAVS

congrats to the Cavs. I'll be honest I didn't think they would pull this one out. I figured the would lose this one and the Dunbar game and limp into the Zanesville game. This gives the Cavs the needed burst into the next game. I am beginning to believe they may just have what it takes to represent the SE region in Columbus this year.
Bronc, I completely agree with that. Call this a "good" problem but Chilli had a lot of weapons that can do a lot of things. Sometimes it's hard to get everyone the looks they may like. I will say in the several times I've seen the Cavs no one has been able to touch Sugar Ray in ability or a lot of other things.
sugar ray, not only can jump out of the gym, but he has a good touch on his shot for a big man. you could tell humpty's legs were gone in the 2nd half (coming up short on everything).. i just dont understand why chilli stopped going to sugar ray in the 4th. i bet the cavs are very tired after the long road trip to marietta last night. i wonder if they even got more than 5 hrs sleep and turn around and play a tough afternoon bout. i believe the officials kept newark from getting beat by at least 20. chilli players were basically getting tackled in the 4th. next sat. chilli plays #1 dayton dunbar( 2 time defending state champs)

bronc21,
We have to be ready for the physical game tuesday night with Ironton at there place this.
I am glad we have the Vincent Warren-Local Warriors at home in the Hatton Memorial, before the game at Wellston's gym against Dayton Dunbar.
That would be another long drive if we had to play Vincent Warren-Local at there place and then turn around and play Dayton Dunbar at Wellston the next day. Thank goodness we don't have to.
The good thing is, Wellston is only about 30 miles from Chillicothe. My alma maters gym (Wellston) is almost like Jackson's Gym. Modeled and built in the same lay-out as Jackson's. The gymnasim is new, nice and has plenty of room.
GO CAVS

Chilli should have won by a much larger margin but thats what happens when you take your foot off the gas with 4 minutes left to go and play stall ball. when you stall you don't score and when you turn it over its at the top of the key so the other team has breakaways and gets right back into it. we are better suited to keep playing our game than trying to take time off the clock without putting the ball in the hole.
very unimpressed with the Newark players i'd heard so much about. Dennison at PG even made the poster for this event? are you serious?
Dhant, I disagree about not stalling in the 4th. Chilly had a 9 point lead and with all the long road trips I felt the most important thing was to have the clock run. I know it is somewhat boring to watch but that shows a team can work the clock to its advantage. Newark was basically tackeling Chilly at the end to make it close. Good win for the Cavs! Thats how you win ball games!
Knowing you can stall the ball at the end of the game could be very important if Chillicothe has say a 5-6 point lead in the closing minute or two of a big tournament game. Doing it for a longer period of time does have both its possible rewards and dangers. It isn't the most exciting thing to watch but an important part of the game. Coach Kellough has been around long enough and has enough success to have a pretty good sense of when to do this.
Agree with baller and bman... depending on the lead and time left, sometimes you have scored enough points from the field to simply start making the other team chase you, foul their guys out, and MAKE free throws. Their 3 main guards should be good enough to handle that type of pressure at the end of games, knowing a team is trying to foul to stop the clock. The Cavs have had very few, if any, games this year where protecting a lead like that comes into play. It worked, enough said. Let us hope that Chilly can advance far enough in the tourney so as to use this experience to their advantage. Posters have complained for weeks about how Chilly has not been pushed, faced adversity, sat their starters for most second halfs, etc. Yesterday that was not the case, and they prevailed, against a good opponent. As Hitchbone has pointed out before, this is another game where last year's team, at this point in the season, may not have fared so well. Alot on experience and maturity on the court for Chilly... Go Cavs!!
I came away somewhat disappointed in Chillicothe, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and guess that they had tired legs. Hitchens was on fire to start the game, but when that fire went out, he should've been working harder to get to the hole.
Chambers wasn't used at all in the 1st half, but had a huge 3rd, and wasn't used in the 4th.
Stu Beverly impressed me on the defensive end though, he didn't have his shot all day it seemed, but made up for it with great on ball defense(Aronhalt from Zanesville should've taken note on this effort)
Here's my big question I heard from everyone around me on the day: How in the world did Newark beat Canal?
Dshanton- Dennison was really on the poster? He looked terrified with the pressure all day and like he had never seen any athleticism at all.
hitchbone64 checking in after a long tiring Saturday in C-Bus. Great day for Cavs fans. Before we get to critical about anything, we are 10-1 and playing much better then we were this time last year. Remember our run in late Jan/Feb? This team has it in them.
I am also an arm chair quaterback and question some of the decisions, but I will say yesterday, the Cavs grit and determination not to lose (REFUSE TO LOSE!) came through.
Newark is a very good OCC basketball team and will make a run in the tourney (to bad they may end up playing Northland). However, I thought the Cavs were clearly the better team. Even in the individual matchups (man-to-man), I thought we were better players 1-8. However, our team defense trumps all that and that is where we won the game.
We did not let Avery do anything in the first half. Most of his points came late as Newark was battling back. Dennison was a none factor and I thought Chambers outplayed their big.
Turnovers and foul trouble cost us. I thought the period in the 2nd where Chambers and Dawes were on the bench was critical. We went from a 10 point lead down to 4. That lead could have balloned.
If these teams played 10 times, the Cavs could blow out Newark, but I don't see the reverse happening. Newark would when some, but they are not explosive.
One area that hurt us was Dawes on the bench in foul trouble. He was strong on the glass early and knocked down a few buckets. I thought the one charging call was a bad one. I spoke with the refs after the game and they said, they let the kids play, but a few of the calls were questionable.
In any event, similar to the NCH game, Hump got us off early and Chambers took over the 3rd (instead of the 4th). When these two get off like that and we get two more in double figures or close, we are dangerous. I have not seen the individual stats (shooting, TO's, assists, etc), but I believe we all around played a solid game.
As for the stall tactic, at 4 minutes, I said it yesterday and will say today, the team would and did go flat. I would have went to a semi-delay and let Chambers take advantages of mismatches, or Hump/Knights get to the glass, but I thought the kids lost their energy. Newark was going to make a run (all good teams do), but lets face it, they could not defend us. Even though Hump was off in the second half, it was not because he was not open. However, Coach K. has been doing this a long time, so I trust in him 100%.
In any event, this big stretch continues. Cavs get three more games this week, with the big matchup Sat against D2 #1 Dayton Dunbar. That will give us the true test of where we are at. Win or lose, these Cavs are getting better and better.
I will also say, I like the minutes Ron Smith is giving us off the bench. I also see major growth in Jordan Benson. Newman will contribute depending on the matchup. As we get farther into the season, the bench does shrink and we will see 7-8 kids playing. Coach has some nice interchangable parts, but these scenarios are playing out and have to occur at all times.
1) If Knights is out, Hump has to be on the floor (and vice versa).
2) If Chambers is out Dawes has to be on the floor (and vice versa).
If Hump and Chambers are out, Dawes, Beverly and Knights have to be on the floor.
