Gallipolis tops Meigs 44-32 in defensive struggle (revised)

Visiting Gallipolis Gallia Academy downed Meigs 44-32 in a defensive struggle in the Larry Morrison Gymnasium at Rock Springs Friday evening. It was the 2007-08 season opener for both teams.

Big David Rumley paced the Blue Devils with 22 points, including 11 of 12 at the free throw circle. Rumley also picked off eight of Gallipolis’ 37 rebounds. Cole Jones added 11 points and was the Blue Devils top rebounder with nine. Jones also led led the team in steals with six.

For Meigs, Jacob Well and Corey Hutton tossed in eight points apiece.

Gallipolis led 9-7, 22-14 and 28-19 at the quartermarks.

GAHS jumped out in front 9-0 behind the scoring of Jones and Rumley. The Marauders battled back in the second period behind Hutton, Jeremy Smith and Chris Good to take a brief 14-12 lead at the at the 4:17 mark.

Gallipolis then went on a 10-0 run behind Rumley and Kyle Mitchell to enter the halftime intermission with a 22-14 advantage.

Clay Bolen and Well pulled Meigs to within five points with 6:44 left in the third stanza, but goals by Mitchell, two free throws by Rumley and a driving lay-up by Jones put GAHS on top 28-19 going into the final period.

Gallipolis outscored the Marauders 16-13 in the final eight minutes

Chris McCoy’s driving layup made it 30-19 at the 7:23 mark. Smith cut the Gallians lead to nine with 7:01 left in the game. With 3:13 left to play, MHS pulled within eight, 32-24 on a freebie by Eric Toler. It was as close the Marauders would get as Rumley, Zack Brown, McCoy, and Jones sank 10 free throws during the final 2:39 of play.

Gallipolis connected on 12 of 32 field goal attempts for 37.5 percent. The Blue Devils were two of eight behind the three-point line. GAHS was 18 of 26 at the charity stripe for 69.2 percent. Gallipolis picked off 37 rebounds, nine by Jones, eight by Rumley and six by John Troester. Gallipolis had 13 personal fouls and committed 22 turnovers.

Meigs sank 14 of 41 field goal attempts for 34.1 percent. MHS was 3-11 at the foul line for 27.2 percent. Meigs picked off 18 rebounds, including five each by Toler and Bolen. The Marauders had 23 personal fouls and committed 19 turnovers.

Gallipolis had 10 assists, led by McCoy’s four. Gallipolis had 10 steals, led by Jones with six. GAHS had three blocked shots, two by Jones and one by Mitchell. Gallipolis had 18 deflections, nine in the final period.

Gallipolis will host Jackson Tuesday in the Devils 2007-08 Southeastern Ohio League opener. It will be a tripleheader, starting at 5 p.m. Meigs played host to River Valley Saturday night.

In Friday’s reserve game, GAHS defeated the Little Marauders, 43-29.

Gallipolis led 11-2, 25-8, and 34-17 at the quartermarks. It was the season opener for both teams.

Nick Mitchell paced the Blue Imps with 11 points. Cory Eberhard added 10 and Jordan Cornwell seven. Camron Bolin scored 15 for Meigs. Austin Sayre added eight.

Meigs will surprise a few fans around the area this winter. The Marauders played hard Friday night. If they improve their shot selections, and get on the boards, they'll be hard to beat.

hey frozen rope, have you been to a game? how do you rebound with 5 guards? our shot selection is 1 and done. both goode who played very little and barcus who didn't play at all could help. we didn't/couldn't defend the post, didn't couldn't rebound, didn't couldn't lay up. our kids played well but you cannot win shooting 3's and hoping for long rebounds. our leading rebounder was bolin( a guard). i have a suggestion for the coach go watch a game!

Stockykid, I think the boys basketball program was messed up long before Ewing was hired. Last year they didn't have enough players for a freshman team. The varsity was 6-36 the previous two seasons and 0-20 in the TVC.

I don't see how you can judge a coach after two games in which the team was very competitve. When did Meigs get its first win last season? It wasn't in the first two games. Two seasons ago they only had one win the entire season! Trust me, Meigs will win more games this season under Ewing than they have the past two seasons combined.
