Logan Elm plays a very good Miami Trace team tonight. Miami Trace's only lost was to Dublin Jerome 66-59

Yeah, Vinton County really struggled at Athens.

This is a troll statement

Has nothing to do with anything

I merely said Athens would be hard to beat at home .

... Logan Elm has lived off of its' patented man to man defense BUT as has been the case in recent years vs bigger opponents the Braves of Coaches Stiverson & Holbert have gone zone ... have gone zone effectively ... last weeks BIG "W" vs a bigger more talented Miami Trace team was in part due to the LE Zone D with LE getting a 75-46 win ... I've always thought that in order to play a GOOD zone a team had to be a very good man to man team first ... as most zones are a matchup variety zone ... if you can't play man a zone has you giving up "areas" for teams to spot up for the perimeter shot ... with Athens advantage in the paint and the deeper bench to go with Griffin Lutz's ability to get to the rim vs a man to man defense I can see LE using zone during this one ... as has been pointed out the history of games between the Bulldogs & Braves is that NO ONE has run away and hid - all of the games have been close and going down to the final possession(s) ...

... in the Miami Trace game Ridge Young had lots of offensive support from role players Logan Holbert, Kamry Wright both made double digit scoring contributions while in the Bloom Carroll game (which LE lost at BC) Holbert/Wright were no shows on the scoreboard ... IF LE is to get the road "W" vs Athens the role players will have to show up in the scorebook in the scoring stats ...

... best of luck to both teams ! ...

Logan Elm is the BEST man to man defensive TEAM in South Eastern Ohio year in year out ! ... Coaches Stiverson and Holbert teach man to man defense from the time LE kids are old enough to put on bb shoes and step on a court - it's part of the LE/Stiverson & Holbert System ... physical, beat up the opponent with your body, move your feet, no hands ALL body - chesting up with the offensive player , TEAM communication - some of the best helpside D you will see by anyone ... not many teams can be put into the "LE Category" on defense - this year I would give LE classification on Man2Man D to : Coach Barrick's Eastern Pike Eagle - very very good and physical (the right way) ... Coach Combs' Vinton County Vikings can be added to the "LE Man2Man" classification ... the fundamentals of man to man have to be taught young, nurtured throughout the early years and fine tuned as kids begin to play opponents of equal or better physical abilities THAT'S when solid fundamentals show up imo ... Coach Holbert told me before the BC game while we were talking that LE has been blessed to have consistency from the younger grades up through the ranks - coaches who implement the fundamentals as directed by the varsity/program head man - THAT is what pays dividends at the varsity level ... Logan Elm has that and has had that ...

... so to answer the question - YES, Logan Elm plays man2man defense first ... and YES they go to a 2/3 zone ... but everything starts with man2man and has the goal of holding an opponent to less than 50 points per game ...

The best defensive school starts with Portsmouth and ends with Portsmouth.

Agree Logan Elm Man to Man is and has to be tough to have the results year in and year out. They are a tough cookie for sure and that' s a compliment to their coaching staff . That's a fact!

Logan Elm in 7 games has held their opponent to 50 points or less 5 times ... 5-2 record ... in one of the 2 losses the Braves gave up but 53 points to FU ... here's some napkins stats correlating W's with defense :

Warren (5-0) ... held opponent to 50 or less 4/5 games
Athens (5-1) ............ 4/6 games
Vinton County (6-0) ... 4/6
Waterford (3-1) ....... 3/4
Oak Hill (7-0) ......... 7/7
Notre Dame (6-0) ..... 5/6
Eastern Pike (5-1) ..... 4/6
Waverly (5-1) .......... 3/6
South Webster (3-3) ... 5/6
Portsmouth Clay (5-2) .. 2/7
Logan Elm (5-2) ......... 5/7
Unioto (5-2) ............. 5/7
Fairfield Union (5-1) ... 5/6

..." 50 or less" Defense = W's

In Chillicothe'a run to the State Title, the only team to hold them under 65 points was Logan Elm (a 49-48 loss in the District Finals). It was beautiful to watch them make the Cavaliers earn every point for the entire game, a Stiverson/Holbert masterpiece.

The funny thing is that Stiverson has said that this isn't one of his better defensive teams yet, which is why it's going to be crazy once they get to that point.

... I don't think this years edition of the Red & White is as physical as past years BUT they have the fundamentals to be good ... I also feel when a team plays a man to man D as LE does it expends a lot of energy, LE offensively runs so much motion, sets picks to free up shooters - throw in a short bench and it IS hard to "get it done defensively" - that goal of "allowing 50 or less" is not easy !!! ... LE does it as well as if not better than anyone imo ...

If kids today were more fundamentally sound - they could eat up a man-to-man D.

I would run one play every time down the floor. Isolate my best guard and best big man and run the pick-n-roll all night!
