peake71: I agree with your point about MaxPreps......at times that site is not reliable as far as being up to date, but I just posted the stats that it presented. I would have to think that #22 Kazee on the Peake would be the leading scorer or close to it in the OVC. I know he put up about 30 on the Trojans. At least there are some Trojans who are at least in the conversation for stat leaders.

Portsmouth made it a sweep of Rock Hill last night @Trojan Arena as they defeated a scrappy Redmen squad 66-54. PHS jumped to a 20-10 lead after 1 quarter, but the Redmen kept the lead to only 10 by the start of the 4th quarter. The Trojans then upped their lead to 51-38, yet RH once again battled back to make it 51-45. PHS then sealed the win with some steals, quick buckets, and FT's. Portsmouth is now 10-6 on the season, and need 1 more win to assure at least a .500 regular season. Portsmouth went 11-11 in the 2021 regular season. PHS is 21-3 all time in OVC play vs. Rock Hill.

Daequan Woods led the Trojans with 21 points, Logan Adkins had 15, Connie Thomas 14, Jay Lofton added 2, while 3 freshmen, Manny Thomas (7), Joe Greene (3), and Mekhi Berry (2) totaled 12 points which was the margin of victory. Seeing those freshmen make a difference in the outcome was a look at next year's Trojans, as all 3 will be starters for the 2026-27 Trojans.

The Portsmouth JV raised its record to 12-3, and have lost only 1 OVC game, that to Ironton.

Next week there may be quite a few postponements with the incoming weather, so I may not be posting for quite a while.

Peake71: You might want to talk to Coach Ater and the athletic director about not having the Panthers on the stats page of MaxPreps. Sometimes MP relies on schools reporting info to them so they can post it.

With the Trojans' schedule put on hold with the weather interruption, I thought it would be a good time to take a look into the history books of PHS boys basketball.

Portsmouth has had 7 teams to make the state tournament since 1961. Here are the starting lineups of these 7 teams:

1961: Mike Haley, Rudy Shively, Dozier Carter, Clem Hartley, Dick Spencer.
1978: Jeff Lisath, Craig Tubbs, Scot Taylor, Scott Burrows, Tom Boden.
1980: Marcus Bendolph, Kirk McMahon, Troy Jackson, John Mitchell, Keith Wilburn.
1988: David Barnes, Dominic McKinley, Patrick Tubbs, Bo Burns, Ricky White.
1990: Daryl Lisath, Phil Whitehead, Damond Mannon, Eric Miller, Brian Kelly.
2011: Andrew Bendolph, Dion McKinley, Zaide Whitley (Noel), Wayne Evans, Tre Underwood
2012: Wayne Evans, Jayllen Carter, Dion McKinley, Zaide Whitley (Noel), Len Collins

From these 7 teams several PHS state tournament records were set: David Barnes in the 1988 State Semifinal vs. Mansfield Malabar scored 24 points which is the most points ever by a Trojan in any state tournament game. Jeff Lisath scored 22 points in the State Championship game vs. Cleveland Cathedral Latin which is the most points ever scored by a Trojan in a State Championship game. Marcus Bendolph scored 21 in the 1980 State Semifinal vs. #1 26-0 Willard, and then scored 16 points in the State Championship game vs. Hamilton Ross. Bendolph is the only Trojan to lead the team in scoring in both the State Semifinal and State Championship games.

Other Notes: Wayne Evans' teardrop shot in the lane with 4 seconds to play led Portsmouth to a 69-68 win over Chesapeake in the 2011 Regional Final. Zaide Whitley led the Trojans in scoring in the 2012 State Championship game with 16 points. Daryl Lisath had 13 points to lead PHS in the 1990 State Championship game vs. Dayton Colonel White. Andrew Bendolph's 15 points led the Trojans in 2011 State Semifinal game vs. Cleveland Cathedral Latin. Craig Tubbs' 160 points in the 8 tournament games in 1978 is a Trojan record for most tournament points, while Jeff Lisath had 159 the same year. Mike Haley led PHS in scoring in the 1961 State Championship game vs. Urbana with 20 points. From these 7 teams came eight 1,000 point scorers: Jeff Lisath 1,256, Craig Tubbs 1,485, Patrick Tubbs 1,297, Phil Whitehead 1,027, Damond Mannon 1,057, Andrew Bendolph 1,000+, Dion McKinley 1,096, and Wayne Evans 1,096.

Portsmouth is the last SE district school to have won a game in the Final 4, that being a 74-66 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the 2012 D3 State Semifinal.
