Does anyone have a box score or individual scoring for Portsmouth yesterday vs Linden-McKinley?

trojandave wrote: Sat Jan 13, 2024 10:17 am The South Point Pointers handed the Trojans one of the most embarrassing home losses in school history, to the tune of 83-49 last night. Not only was it embarrassing, but it also was the largest margin of defeat in any home OVC contest since the Trojans joined in 2015. PHS jumped to a 7-2 lead, but after that it was all Pointers as they completely dominated every aspect of the game. DeAndre Berry scored 23 points to raise his career total to 934, while Donovan Breech scored 11. Caleb Lovely drilled four 3's in the same right corner in the 1st half, and the Trojans seemingly couldn't find him in that corner. After coming off a 30 point win at Ironton, this game was shocking to say the least.

The Trojans continue to struggle at home in the OVC. Over the last 2 years, and including this season thus far, PHS is 5-12 at home in the conference. This year, Portsmouth is 3-0 on the road in the OVC, and 1-2 at home. The JV team lost and is now 3-6 on the season.

Portsmouth is 7-3 overall.

Portsmouth takes on Columbus Linden McKinley today at the Buckeye Elite at Shawnee State. Starting time is 2 PM.
I was stunned by this score. Is South Point really very good? I thought so for 7 or 8 games and then I thought, no not really. This game makes me think they are one of the southeast’s better teams again. What do you think?
South Point is a good team. Portsmouth was overhyped from the beginning because of a new coach.
You.must have a horrible time trying to sleep at night with the Portsmouth Trojans basketball team living in your head not paying a dam penny in rent 😂😂😂😂 keep gracing us with your presence and hate we are loving it. 😂😂😂 Everytime you show up it's a compliment just knowing you can't stay away.

Nice to see them bounce back from the night before.
Legs weren't there in the beginning, and I thought it was going to be another long night. Kudos to those young men to keep hustling and grinding. Can't say enough about Malachi Loper, he flat got after it. He took a beating all night long, but he never backed down from the challenge. Good luck tomorrow Trojans.

Portsmouth rebounded from a 34 point home loss to South Point with a 62-47 win over Columbus Linden McKinley at the Buckeye Elite Showcase held at Shawnee State on Saturday. PHS jumped to an 1st half 20+ lead, but the Panthers whittled the margin to 15 in the 4th quarter. PHS got balanced scoring as listed above. DeAndre Berry now had 953 points in his career, and barring injury, will easily surpass that mark soon. Malachi Loper also continued his march toward 1,000, as he is now around 850 (unofficial).

Portsmouth is now 8-3 on the season, and is 4 wins away from posting its 1st winning season since 2018 (16-8). Last week was one of the most bizarre in Trojans history. Winning at Ironton by 30, losing at home to South Point by 34, then beating Linden McKinley by 15.

The Trojans are tied for 2nd in the OVC, behind Ironton and South Point who sport 5-1 conference records.

PHS's game with Minford was cancelled for 1/16 and will be played 2/14.

Going back to the South Point game which was an 83-49 loss, I wanted to find out if there was any big reversal of outcomes vs. the same team in the same season. Sure enough, back in the early 2000's, about 2004 or 2005, I travelled from Columbus (was working up there at the time) to South Point on a Tuesday night. The Pointers smacked the Trojans 70-34, and it was as much of a blowout as the game last Friday. Then at South Webster the two teams met in the sectional tournament. Portsmouth won the game 72-70, which was a shocking outcome considering how much the Pointers had dominated the Trojans earlier, and how PHS had trouble scoring.

High school basketball has its share of unpredictable results for which there is little rational explanation. What happened back then between PHS and SP was one of those times.

With the win over Columbus Linden McKinley, Portsmouth now has a 79-32 all time record vs. Columbus schools. Linden McKinley was the D1 state runnerup in 1988, the same year the Trojans won the very 1st D2 state title. The Trojans beat Linden McKinley that season at PHS 88-66. Linden went on to lose to Cincinnati Woodward in the D1 state championship game 107-70, which was one of the biggest blowouts in state tournament history.

There has been some debate as to whether the Trojans could have beaten Woodward since the 2 schools had a common opponent, but as an eyewitness to the games, I have maintained to this day that Woodward was 15 points better than PHS. I still remember that Woodward starting 5.......6-6 Melvin Bostic, 6-6 Katara Reliford, 6-5 DJ Boston, 6-3 Chip Jones, and 5-10 Orlando Berry. They were monsters on the boards, and that's where I think the Trojans would have had the most trouble.

Looks like the weather is going to moderate this coming week, so it looks good to get all 3 games in......H vs. Rock Hill Tuesday, H vs. Gallia Academy on Friday, and H vs. North Adams on Saturday. Saturday will be a special night, as it will be Basketball Alumni Night. Many former Trojan basketball players have been contacted to participate, and the response so far has been good. After the game, there will be a social hour in the cafeteria for fans to meet and greet these Trojans.

Another very good idea by Coach Lisath who embraces our history. He has already decorated the locker room with pictures of former great Trojans who distinguished themselves on the hardwood.

Found out some more accurate information about DeAndre Berry's career point total. Right now he has 935 points as opposed to the 953 as previously reported. Assistant coach Aaron Smith was a great help on this. He might be able to get past 1,000 this week as Portsmouth has 3 home games.

Another rare event of Trojan history occurred last night as 6-2 SR DeAndre Berry scored 40 points in a 72-66 OT win over Rock Hill @PHS. Berry became only the 5th player in PHS history to tally at least 40 points in a single game. DeAndre now has 983 points in his career, as there was discussion with several individuals after the game about his actual career point total. Berry is now averaging 25.8 PPG for the season.

The Trojans upped their record to 9-3, and 5-2 in the OVC. Rock Hill made PHS work for the win, as they hung close most of the game and hit a game tying 3 pointer with 1 second left to force OT. PHS clinched the game with some critical FT's in OT.

Portsmouth needs 1 more win to surpass last season's win total, which ended in a 9-14 record after an OT loss to South Point in the sectional. PHS's all time record now stands at 1,524--850.

Portsmouth entertains Gallia Academy @PHS on Friday, then North Adams comes to Trojan Arena on Saturday, with Basketball Alumni Night as part of the festivities.

Here is the list of 40 point scorers in PHS history:

Matthew Fraulini 46 vs. Rock Hill 2019....Coach: Eugene Collins
Jayllen Carter 44 vs. Jackson 2012.........Coach: Eugene Collins
Dion McKinley 42 vs. Logan 2012............Coach: Eugene Collins
Larry Hisle 41 vs. Wilmington 1965.........Coach: George Heller
DeAndre Berry 40 vs. Rock Hill 2024........Coach: Jeff Lisath
