Ironton: 2005 State Champions?
With evidence finally coming out that OJ Mayo has basically been a pro athlete the last 4 years, does this mean that Ironton will be awarded the 2005 State Title? Certainly the OHSAA will strip North College Hill of their two titles, as will Huntington High School also will be stripped.

According to Mike and Mike this morning. It may be VERY hard to prove.

According to an OHSAA report, any findings and reporting of wrongdoing must be done within 42 days of the state final or nothing can be done. So, according to this rule, it is a done deal, NCH shouldn't lose the title.

I heard on the radio this morning that OHSAA is looking into the allegations to see if NCH will have to forfiet those State champioships or not. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
From FOX Sports on MSN:
The Ohio High School Athletic Association will also look into the allegations that Mayo received payments while at North College Hill High School, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.
It was not clear if the team would have to forfeit its Division III boys' basketball state titles from 2005 and '06.
"In digesting things for a day and talking to other staff members, it is more accurate to say that we cannot answer that [forfeits] question at this point," OHSAA assistant commissioner Bob Goldring told The Enquirer via e-mail. "We would have to know the exact details of the findings, have proof that they were indeed true and then determine if any of the bylaws would be applicable."

Mr. Goldring is who I quoted from yesterday's Enquirer. Looks like he's changed his tune. Hmmmm.

I dont know how they can keep the titles, if this allegation is true. I think we all know the allegation is indeed true. it's just a matter of whether it can be proven

I'm not getting into a "If this would have happened...." discussion, but if Mayo is absent from that game the second half probably turns out differently. He scored 14 of his 22 in the second half and nine of NCH's 14 points in the fourth quarter. Walker had a great game against Ironton, but Mayo led the way in the second half.

Tobias-As regards to by-law 11, this is an absolutely ridiculous by-law. It almost guarantees that if you cheat that you can get away with it, because someone only has 7 weeks to catch you. If you can strip people of Olympic gold medals years after the fact or strip NCAA teams of titles way after the fact, why can someone not be penalized in Ohio for violating rules more than 7 weeks after the violations are discovered?
Friday night fan-If you are NCH, do you really deserve to keep the state title that way?
The OHSAA needs to get some backbone. They are a good organization, that does much more good than bad for high school sports, but they walk away from controversies way, way too easy.

Re: Ironton: 2005 State Champions?
Ya know with the way Ironton played against them and considering they are a public school with a roster made up of local kids, they have no reson to say they own the state champ trophy. That team accomplished a heck of alot and needs no trophy to show off. NCH was a "dream team" type team thrown together and to think that this wasn't going on is being more naive than most b/c most new this was happening long before the reports. Of course OJ took money, i assume so did walker and so did the big man, harris i think was his name. USC should have seen this coming and next will be KSU. Ironton should be proud and should be remembered just as much for finishing second as NCH will be for finishing first, i know 2nd place is the first loser and all but they won with local kids not recruited kids.

OJ taking money? Are you serious? No way? Raise your hand if you did not see this coming.

Friday nite,if you were at that game you would understand that yes mayo was the difference, even with him the Tigers tookem to the limit! I would think the Tigers or anyone else in this situation would gladly and proudly take the trophy and the title of State Champions!

As much as i would like to have a state title i wouldnt know if thats how I would want it. The money given to him didnt effect the game so i really dont know if thats how I would want one or not?
