Making a lot of hoops can help the Ironton Fighting Tigers score a lot of points. Making hoops in this game can help everyone score even bigger.
The Ironton High School basketball team, majorettes and flag corps are sponsoring a “Hoops for Heart†to promote good heart health.
The promotion will be Friday when Ironton hosts Marietta at the Sports Center. Event coordinator Valerie Freeman said the goal is to raise $10,000.
“Everyone has been very receptive and very supportive,†said Freeman. “We’re asking the fans to wear red since that’s the color that represents the heart association.â€
Freeman said several activities are planned this week at the school in conjunction with the event.
Also, the second and third grade students will sing the national anthem, the Tigers in Motion will perform at halftime, and the Ironton High School singers will display their talents.
“We’re trying to get everyone to come out and support the event. The heart association has never had a promotion at a high school event. Usually it’s just students going out and collecting donations. We want to get the team as much support as we can and help the heart association,†said Freeman.
The basketball team will use a “Hoops for Heart†basketball during warm-ups. There will be raffles held for Ohio State items with proceeds going to the heart association.
“(Ironton coach Mark) LaFon has been great to work with. He gave us a date and told us to run with it and that he would do anything to help us,†said Freeman.
Sponsorships for the T-shirts being sold were filled quickly.
“So far we’ve had a great response we hope to have a great response Friday,†said Freeman.
One of the sponsors — Chick-Fil-A — will be giving away coupons for a free sandwich.
Other sponsors for the event include Cumberland Heart and Vascular Unit at King’s Daughter’s Medical Center, Dr. Jason Ford, Giovanni’s Pizza of Coal Grove, Magic 97.9 radio, Bentley Pharmacy, Treasures from the Valley, Phillips’ Funeral Home, Hurley Insurance, Cindi’s Studio, mayor Rich Blankenship , Fighting Tiger Sports, McCauley’s Furniture, Iron City Hardware, the Moose Lodge and the Ironton Tribune.
T-shirts will be on sale the night of the game or interested persons may contact Freeman in advance at the high school at 532-3911.
Donations are also being accepted.
