2nd Annual Spartan Classic @ Alexander HS - 4 game rundowns/1 Napkin Stats - A Success!

Post by pfloyd »

... if you didn't make it to the 2nd Annual Spartan Classic Saturday - you missed out on some great hoops action ...

Federal Hocking 76 vs Paint Valley 74
Meigs 37 vs Fort Frye 53
Trimble 35 vs Peebles 44
Warren 43 vs Fairland 44
Alexander 69 vs Portsmouth West 57

Federal Hocking JV's downed the Alexander JVs in the fill-in game for Waterford vs Waverly (canceled due to illness @ Waterford)

Federal Hocking 76
Paint Valley 74 a final

... a great matchup of D4 teams, both have a chance to make deep runs in the D4 post season, with the possibility of a re-match at some point in the one and done season ...

... Coach Thompson's FH Lancers opened up on fire from downtown ... hitting on 6 of their first 9 fgs from behind the arc in the opening quarter of action! led by Andrew Airhart's 3 triples, Tariq Cottrill 2 treys plus a deuce and Scotty Balch hitting for 1 three point in the period ... FH pushed the ball, upped the tempo forcing PV to "play basketball" ... the Lancers turned the PV team over 8 times in the 1st period while taking care of the ball in their possession (2 turnovers) ... when the dust settled on period 1 ... Fed Hock had held the Bearcats to a Braylon Robertson three ball, 3 two-pointers led by Robertson's 5 pts/Cole Miller 3/6-5 Dax Estep 3 pts and 2 for 2 from the line by Carson Free (2 pts) ... Federal Hocking 24 Paint Valley 13 after 1 ... the 2nd period was a 180 degree turnaround - in tempo - Paint Valley was able to slow it down, making the game more of a half court game ... in doing so, they were able to get the ball inside to Miller & Estep - a closely called game had FH getting key players in foul trouble/off the floor - Airhart picking up his 2nd personal/ along with Iden Miller ... lots of different lineups for FH as the PV got into the double bonus for most of the 2nd period taking 16 FTs (11/16) ... the Lancer D held PV to 4 fgs but the FTs got the Bearcats were able to outscore Lancers 20-14 in the period pulling within 5 points by the half ... scoring for FH in the 2nd - 3 pointers in the qtr by Airhart/Cottrill & Miller (1 each) / Tariq Cottrill (6 pts)/Billy Ward 2/3 each for Airhart & Miller ... for PV Carson Free 5pts/Cole Miller 5/Estep 5/3 pts off the bench from Gavin Kingery/ 2 pts Robertson ... Federal Hocking 38 Paint Valley 33 at the half ... great game - 2 excellent basketball teams no matter the division ... Federal Hocking winning the opening half of action ... Paint Valley with size, an outstanding post player in 6-5 Dax Estep, good strength on the wings with Free (6-2) & Miller (6-2) ... very good perimeter three point shooters in Robertson/Estep/Free ended up outscoring FH in the final 2 periods to make it an exciting finish (PV 41 FH 38 in the final 2 periods) ... Federal Hocking took back the tempo in the 3rd - opening the qtr with an 8-0 run ... a transition 2 pts to get things started followed by a trio of three points - 2 by Billy Ward and an Andrew Airhart trey ... FH led 46-33 with 6:03 to play in the 3rd ... PV climbed on the back of Dax Estep as the 6-5 senior went 3/3 from the FT line, dropped a 3 ball and 3 buckets in the paint on offensive boards (12 points in quarter) ... PV got chip in buckets from Free & Kingery ... Fed Hock was led by Cottrill's 6 pts/Ward's (6 pts)... 3 from Miller/Airhart and off the bench from Balch ... Federal Hocking 60 Paint Valley 49 after 3 ... what I've noticed in the 3 games that I have had eyes on Federal Hocking from the Cheap Seats - is that they seem to be "mature" on the court - the players haven't shown "panic" even in the losses I've seen to Caldwell and Alexander ... the coaching staff for FH - Coach Thompson and Coach Tolson - both have "coached the game maturely" if that makes sense - calm, business like manner in all 3 games ... Paint Valley continued going with the big man Estep - 12 pts (24 for the half) ... Fed Hock countered with Cottrill (5pts) & Miller (7pts) ... FH led 70-59 with 4:24 to play ... by 3:01 on the clock PV closed to 62-70 ... at :37.9 Fed Hock clung to a 75-71 lead ... Braylon Robertson opened the night's scoring for PV with triple in the 1st quarter , with :08.5 on the clock Robertson drained his 2nd triple of the game from "the 3rd ring of Saturn" (borrowing from Lou Horvath) to draw PV to 74-75 ... FH's Tariq Cottrill made 1 of 2 ... 76-74 Lancers ... miss by PV ... Federal Hocking 76 Paint Valley 74 a final ...

Trimble 35
Peebles 44 a final

... I'm a big fan of fundamental basketball ...teams that are disciplined show you the discipline in warmups, show you fundamentals in warming up ... BOTH Peebles, Trimble under the teaching/coaching of Coach Josh Arey for Peebles and Coach Howie Caldwell for Trimble do just that ... when I have talked to both Howie and Coach Arey separately in the past BOTH speak so highly of each other as coaches/teachers of the game - Howie of Coach Arey as "the best student of the game" ...Coach Arey of Howie as "the best teacher" of the game ... as a Cheap Seat guy who has watched and admired them both - they are both right ... not many , if any better than these 2 gentleman courtside... watching the game Saturday between the 2 teams and the 2 coaches - discipline/fundamentals/patience built into the offense to get what you want from the places on the floor you want to take shots - I love watching great coaches/teachers of the game MANAGE the game courtside ... do the players ALWAYS get it right? get it done? execute on the court? - no - BUT these 2 coaches put them in positions to be successful - to do it right ...

... quarter 1 was played even as each team had 4 players dent the napkin stat sheet ... both teams offensively are very similar - neither shoot many 3 balls, both work the ball offensively with lots of motion & ball movement, few wasted dribbles ... bounce passes ... screens on and away from the ball - fun to watch ... for Peebles Mason Sims (5pts) had the only 3 pointer of the quarter from either team, 4 points from Cory Reed, 2 each from Chris Oldfield/Gage Grooms ... for the Tomcats 5 pts from Kaden Kempton, 2 pts apiece Michael Clark/Tyler Hill/Chase Patton ... Trimble 11 Peebles 13 after 1 ... Peebles stepped up the defense holding Trimble to only 2 fgs made in the 2nd qtr ... a 3 pointer from Tyler Hill/ Clark with 4 pts & 2/2 from the FT line by Brandon Burdette ... Peebles spread the scoring around - 6 players - Cory Reed with 4 pts/2 each from Sims/Grooms/Hayden Browning to go with single FTs from Zane Knechtly and Remington Beckham ... Peebles 25 Trimble 20 at the half ... Neither team lit it up in the 3rd quarter or the entire 2nd half of action - Trimble closed the gap in the 3rd period outscoring the Indians 12-10 ... Kayden Kempton with a couple of buckets at the rim for 4 pts in the qtr., Cole Wright added 4 points all from the FT line ... 2 points each from Levi Weber and Tyler Hill ... PHS was paced by Mason Sims/ Hayden Downing's 4 pts each ... Cory Reed added a deuce to finish the scoring in the period for the Indians ... Peebles 35 Trimble 32 after 3 ... the final period Peebles held Trimble to 1 fg/3 points - game, set and match ... Peebles 44 Trimble 35 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Trimble

Pfloyd, I didn't make it to the Spartan Classic yesterday, but being able to read your rundowns and opinions on all the games is just about as good as being there. Sounds as if you were able to see some very good basketball throughout the day. Everything that I have heard or read about indicates that Alexander was a perfect host in putting this event together.

... the people who run ALL of these "in-season" get togethers are amazing - Alexander's "group" from the AD, to those who volunteer their time to make sure that all of the participants are treated the best is 2nd to none ... the Alexander tournament committee was working on next year's Spartan Classic as THIS years classic was taking place ... I was asked about teams who will be good NEXT season (teams with lots of returning starters etc) ... Alexander is doing it the right way - getting local quality teams, and reaching out to other quality teams/program around the SE District ... Fairland, Portsmouth West, Peebles, Paint Valley ALL traveled 2+ hours to participate - kudos to the coaches for accepting invitations to play in the event ... I asked Coach Speed of Fairland if the Dragons were getting frequent flyer miles as he and Coach McClanahan of Portsmouth West both made the trip to Warren's Clash at the Coliseum and Alexander's Spartan Classic ... love seeing teams like Portsmouth West, Paint Valley, Peebles, Fairland that I normally don't see due to the travel time ...

Great event!!! looking forward to next year Dec 29 & 30th ...

Warren 43
Fairland 44 a final

... take away the fact that THE game itself was outstanding, the matchup of coaches -Coach Maddox vs Coach Speed, the clash of 2 of the most successful programs in SEO over the last 20 years was worth the price of admission ... a game decided on the last shot ... it was truly a game where you as a fan of high school hoops hated to see either team have to take a loss ... Fairland 44 Warren 43 a final ...

... Warren Local ... Fairland High School ... any hoops fan in SEO would agree that the word "excellence" can be used when attached to either when talking high school basketball ... to have them in the same gym, on the same court , AT the same time!!! - brilliant !!! ... I have followed both of these programs, these coaches from the beginning of their coaching careers at their respective schools - outstanding coaches, even better individuals ... I have much respect for both of these men, their staffs, and the programs they have built ... I watch games, do the napkin stats, admire the play of the student athletes on the court, in this game - I took in the game - great - but I also was able to hear/watch the coaching/teaching courtside by both coaches - I was smiling the entire game ...

... Warren went with size in the paint - Trent Taylor/Chase Lupardus/Hayden Wells ... goal being to get the ball down on the blocks to take advantage of the lack of size inside for Fairland ... Fairland played well in their previous game vs Portsmouth - getting out in transition/running which opened up the floor for the Dragon passing game/gave them the good spacing the FHS game needs to be successful without the size in the middle ... ALL of the Warren fgs in the opening period were in the paint - Taylor/Lupardus/Wells each with 2 pts and sophomore Jacob Sealey off the bench for a bucket in the paint to round out the Warrior scoring ... Fairland got on the board with a 3 pointer from junior PG Chase Allen, and drives into the paint by Will Davis/JD Thacker to go with 3/4 FTs off the bench by Hunter Lunkins ... Fairland 10 Warren 8 after one ... the engine that makes the Warriors go is sophomore guard Julian Stadelman , after a scoreless 1st , Stadelman got a steal, taking it the rim for a transition bucket after a pair of Trent Taylor FTs, a 3 pointer from the lone senior for WHS Ayden Cornell (3 pts), Lupardus turned in the paint for a 2 at the rim ... Stadelman added 3 buckets at the rim to end the Warren 13 point quarter ... Fairland continued the motion offense, ball movement getting scoring on patented FHS backdoor cuts, 4 Dragons dented the scoresheet - Will Davis with a strip and score, Chase Allen 5pts on his 2nd triple of the game & a deuce ... 2 pointers each from Thacker/Steeler Leep/ Cliff Fransen (fr) ... Fairland 23 Warren 23 at intermission ... great coaches make the most of adjustments at the break - Coach Speed is one of the best, the Dragons jumped out early in the 3rd with a 10-4 run to take a 35-27 lead at 4:07 in the 3rd ... led again by Chase Allen (who looked the most relaxed/letting the game come to him, that he has all season) 5pts on his 3rd trey of the game and a back door bucket with the assist by Will Davis ... Davis added triple of his own with a pair of FTs (5pts) ... a time out by Warren, the Warriors went on a 9-2 run in the final 2:57 on the back of Trent Taylor's 8 pts ... Warren 36 Fairland 35 end of 3 ... defense is a calling card of both of these teams/fundamentally sound - body on a body , man to man D ... a Jacob Sealey (soph) 3 gave Warren a 39-35 advantage ... defense ... a Steeler Leep trey drew the Dragons within 1 at 38-39 with 4:29 to play ... the Warriors pushed the lead to 5 behind 2 point buckets at the rim by Taylor/Cornell ,the Warren upper classmen, 43-38 Warriors with 2:43 to play ... more defense - this time from the Dragons as Fairland shutout Warren the final 2:43 on the clock ... a 3 pointer from JD Thacker ... 1 for 2 from the FT line by Brody Buchanan ... 43-42 Warren with :20.2 on the clock ... Warren went 0-3 from the FT line in the final minutes of play ... at :12.1 trailing 43-44 Warren with a turnover on the far boundary line - catch the ball - FHS has to foul ... turnover/ Fairland ball with 12.1 on the clock ... inbounds pass to Buchanan ... the sophomore goes the length of the court ... ended with a lefthanded, finger roll at the rim as the buzzer sounded ... Fairland 44 Warren 43 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Warren

Scoring ... Trent Taylor 14, Julian Stadelman 10, Jacob Sealy 8, Ayden Cornell 5, Chase Lupardus 4, Hayden Wells 2
3 Pointers ... 3/8 ... Jacob Sealey 2, Ayden Cornell 1
FTs ... 2/5
TOs ... 10
PnP ... 12 fgs/ 24 points in the paint
PnT ... 2 fgs/ 4 points in transition
Pbk ... 1 fg/ 2 points on putback buckets

... the Warriors even in the loss looked good, defensively holding Fairland under 50 ... youth - learning how to win, in a game where every possession is important, turnovers and missed FT's in the final minute allow opponents/especially good opponents to get into a position to win - the best of opponents take the opportunity and run with it ... Great coaches can only put players in position to win, players have to execute , youth has to be IN those positions to win or lose based on execution to learn ... much was learned by the Warriors on Saturday vs the Dragons ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Fairland

Scoring ... Chase Allen 13, Will Davis 9, JD Thacker 9, Steeler Leep 5, Brody Buchanan 3, Hunter Lunkins 3, Cliff Fransen 2
3 Pointers ... 6/12 ... Chase Allen 3, Steeler Leep 1, JD Thacker 1, Will Davis 1
FTs ... 6/8
TOs ... 13
PnP ... 7 fgs/ 14 points in the paint
PnT ... 1 fg/ 2 points in transition
Pbk ... 1 fg/ 2 points on putback buckets

... the Dragons put together back to back quality W's (Portsmouth/ Warren) ... the key in both wins was the motion/movement of the Dragons on offense ... the motion, the tempo, created spacing on the floor ... with the spacing the Dragons were able to get buckets at the rim via the backdoor cuts from the wing - beautiful execution ... Chase Allen looked more "at ease" on the floor - not forcing his shot ... the 50% from 3 point land much better than in previous games ... the Dragons continue on the road - Huntington WVa Tuesday night, Sheridan at Mt, Vernon College Wednesday/Lucas HS at Mt.Vernon College Thursday ... tough schedule, finding out what everyone's roles are, who the scorers are, who needs to step up and BE scorers ...

Alexander 69
Portsmouth West 57 a final

...The TVC vs the SOC ... Alexander vs Portsmouth West ... D2 vs D3 ... both in the SE District ... the Senators for Coach McClanahan coming off of a Friday night 53-37 win over Oak Hill, Alexander with a hard fought , OT loss to TVC rival Athens on the road ... on paper being the backend of Friday/Saturday games Alexander looked to be the team that the back 2 back would hurt the most - limited bench, key player Kyler D'Augustino being a 32 minute per game player having to go up against a West team whose MO is to pressure the ball for 32 minutes/full court ... at the very least this one would tell us a lot about the AHS team - conditioning/ability to control tempo/ keeping Kyler D' in the game and fresh ... Alexander 69 Portsmouth West 57 a final ...

... locally, everyone has the impression that Alexander is ALL Kyler D'Augustino ... offensively anyway ... KD is averaging 30ppg , playing 32 minutes per game ... opponents night in night out look to stop K D', get the ball out of K D's hands, make the rest of the Spartan TEAM beat them ... Alexander HAS some pretty good role players surrounding D'Augustino - all of which stay/play within themselves for TEAM ... Zach Barnhouse 6-7 ish, Dylan Allison on the wing can hit the perimeter jumper ... Jagger Cain - ballhandling/keep the ball moving back into D'Augustino's hands ... off the bench sophomore Klaxton Hawk has given Coach Skinner more than quality minutes scoring the ball and hardnosed D/rebounding ... the opening quarter/half was all the BIG MAN in the middle- Zach Barnhouse - 10 points in the 1st qtr , all down on the blocks ... D'Augustino & Co. accounted for the other 6 points in the period -Kyler D'/Klaxton Hawk/Dylan Allison all with a bucket apiece ... for Portsmouth West senior Mitchell Irwin 5pts including a triple from the wing, Ryan Sissel added a pair of buckets in the paint to go with 2 points from Levi Patrick ... Alexander 16 Portsmouth West 11 end of 1 ... West was never able to get out and push the ball in the opening qtr, followed up with the same in the 2nd as Alexander did what it does best - control the tempo/flow of the game ... the Senators were unable to force turnovers (4 total in the opening 2 qtrs) - only 1 transition basket for West ... Alex won the 2nd period 15-5 to stretch the lead ... this coming mainly from the role players as D'Augustino had but 6 points for the half/4 pts in the 2nd ... Barnhouse added 5 pts in the second/ 15 for the half ... Dylan Allison added a 3 pointer in the 2nd/ Hawk with a solid 5 point half/ with a 2 pointer + the bonus in the 2nd ... Alexander 31 Portsmouth West 16 at the half ... Alexander with a 15 point advantage/ while Kyler D' only contributed 6 points? the last time this scenario played out (vs Fed Hock) K D' ended the game with 30 points/24 in the 2nd half ... on this day Kyler D' had support from the big man Barnhouse as the senior center added 6 points in the 3rd to match K D' in the quarter (6 pts for KD') both bookended with Cain/Hawk adding 2 point baskets ... for West, only 3 fgs to go with 7/9 from the FT line ... 2 pters from Irwin/Diamonte Skaggs/Sissel ... Alexander 47 West 29 after 3 ... the 4th period had the Senators turnup the pressure, trying to push the tempo ... Alexander for it's part wanted to slow down the action, make it a Kyler D'Augustino FT line practice drill ... West put up 28 points in the period, off the bench Brayden Vernier knocked down 2 triples and deuce for an 8pt push ... Ryan Sissel added 7 points in the paint , Michael Irwin with 8pts before leaving with an ankle injury ... Diamonte Skaggs closed out the Senator scoring with 3 points ... 28 points ... still not enough to slowdown the Kyler D'Augustino show, the 6-2 senior guard put up 16 fourth qtr points (4 fgs and 8/10 from the line) ... Barnhouse 4 pts in the paint and 2/2 from the FT line for Allison ... Alexander 69 Portsmouth West 57 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Portsmouth West

Scoring ... Ryan Sissel 18, Mitchell Irwin 15, Brayden Vernier 13, Trevor Fike 4, Diamonte Skaggs 3, Jeffery Bishop 2, Levi Patrick 2
3 Pointers ... 4/15 ... Bradyen Vernier 3, Mitchell Irwin 1
FTs ... 13/18
TOs ... 16
PnP ... 8 fgs/ 16 points in the paint
PnT ... 6 fgs/ 12 points in transition
Pbk ... 1 fg/ 2 points on putback buckets

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Alexander

Scoring ... Kyler D'Augustino 28, Zach Barnhouse 25, Klaxton Hawk 7, Dylan Allison 7, Jagger Cain 2
3 Pointers ... 1/13 ... Dylan Allison 1

... not many times can you say you enjoyed an 11 hour day doing ANYTHING ! but 11 hours, watching hoops, 6 games/12 teams all coming to ME - a perfect day in my book ... the Spartan Classic was a great success coming from a fan who spent the entire day in the cheap seats ... the Alexander tournament committee does it right -get the best local (SE district local) teams available, look at teams who have good followings to matchup teams from "afar" ... great hospitality from everyone connected with the Classic ... everyone involved in the Classic teams, officials, coaches & players were treated well from the time they entered the facility at Alexander High School to the time they got back on the bus heading home ... a special thanks to the teams making the long trips! Portsmouth West, Fairland, Paint Valley, Peebles all traveling up to 2-2+ hours each way to participate - we as fans of the game appreciate these teams for making their trips ... Fran, Coach Skinner, Lou, Randy & Co. - we done !!! I recommend the experience to anyone wanting to see good high school hoops - the Spartan Classic is first class !!! ... well done everyone ...

All good rundowns! Question for you.... in the Meigs/FF stats, I didn't see Harrison listed for Meigs. He's one of their main scorers. Did FF shut him out or was he down with an injury?

93bulldog had told me prior to the game that Braylon Harrison was "a player" for Meigs - he never saw the floor ... this was my first in-person look at Meigs this season ... they had 4 players in "street clothes" ... I'm guessing he was among that group ...

Harrison was injured in Friday nights game at River Valley. Thought I heard Coach Hill mention a possible concussion (not certain of that though).

Thanks both of you for the responses! I figured it was some sort of injury. He's a really nice player and I didn't think he'd be shut out in the box score. If it is a concussion, hope it's not a serious one and he can make it back without missing too much time.

I follow Meigs pretty close.
They've been dealing with quite a few challenges this season.
Harrison 6'4" very athletic guard has been battling though some sickness and now a concussion on Friday night. Not sure when he's cleared to play again.
Their senior leader and OU baseball commit Stewart, suffered a broken ankle in the Fort Frye game.
Jr sharp shooter and a big scorer Brayden Stanley out for the season from a football ACL injury.
Jr defensive specialist Griff Cleland has been sidelined from a preseason surgery.
Inexperienced sophomores have had to step up into bigger rolls faster than what I'd imagine coaches would've wanted.

My son suffered a concussion in practice two weeks ago and he is still out. Missed 5 games now.
