New Enrollment Numbers

Post by bbjunky81 »

Coming from a post from 4th and Goal in another thread, I figured this deserved it's own thread.

These are the new proposed enrollment numbers. Schools can still change this via appeal, but it's worth looking at.

http://www.ohsaa.org/members/hsenroll15.htm

The divisional breakdown could STILL change, but this is what the divisional breakdown was like with the last figures.

Boys Basketball

Division Enrollment Schools
I 370 and more
II 213 to 369
III 121 to 212
IV 120 and less

Some interesting ones that stuck out for boys enrollment:

Waverly 222 (Probably D2)
Portsmouth 233 (Probably D2)
Minford 180 (D3)
Paint Valley 126 (Probably D3)
Peebles 98 (D4)
Lucasville Valley 122 (Going to be right around D3/D4 cutoff)

Some other ones from around the state that stood out to me:

Worthington Christian 154 (Staying D3)
Africentric 223 (Potentially D2, WOW)

Feel free to post any ones you see.

Glad to see Africentric out of D4...gives the area D4 teams some hope of getting to Columbus. Will be interesting to see if Valley drops and/or Paint Valley moves up as they both could be annual Regional contenders in D4. Also surprised at South Webster's numbers (they're actually smaller than SOC I schools Green and Symmes Valley now). Webster has seen a steady decline from around 120 to 80 over past couple of years. I've heard those numbers should improve with the elementary classes coming up though.*

A big drop for Marietta from 381 to 317.

All Lawrence Co schools show decreased numbers
South Point from 209 to 193
Fairland from 202 to 187
Rock Hill from 189 to 151
Chesapeake from 176 to 134
Ironton from 162 to 160
Coal Grove from 140 to 137

Wouldn't it change the D4 tournament if Valley and Chesapeake moved down? Probably a stretch, but who knows where the cutoff will land.

Chillicothe had a gigantic drop as well. Not sure that most of these numbers will stay after appeals.

Very hard to believe Waverly gained 21 while Minford dropped 39 and Northwest dropped 44.
Those are huge numbers!

Very interesting to see Portsmouth increase from 187 to 233........good to see our school district gain in numbers after so many years of declining enrollment.......and it will make the D2 tournament that much more intriguing. I personally am excited to see the Trojans compete in D2. 34 of our 37 district titles have come above the D3 level. Old rivals Chillicothe and Portsmouth in the same tournament class.......it hasn't happened since 1977. If the sectionals stay the same as last year, Portsmouth would be going to the one at Southeastern Ross. Portsmouth hasn't been a D2 school in basketball since the 2003 season. The Trojans lost that year to Gallia Academy in the sectional final 53-51.

The divisional breakdowns normally change a little each time, but I don't see any drastic differences in the 4 divisions.

I understand that Portsmouth's projected enrollment includes kids residing in Sciotoville (within Portsmouth city school district) who will ultimately go to East. This will more than likely have Portsmouth remain at DIII.

Moses Guthrie: You bring up a good point......I never thought about that issue with the kids who will go to Sciotoville (East). That will have a profound effect on Portsmouth's final enrollment, but it would still have to be appealed if it hasn't been already. It does seem odd, though, that this balloon in enrollment due to kids going to Sciotoville did not have this effect on Portsmouth's enrollment in prior counts. I have seen counts of 187, 179, 196 and 204 just in this century.

That could be the case, but Sciotoville has their own enrollment count listed as well. I believe the count is based on kids from grades 9-11 in attendance on a certain day. Sciotoville's number wasn't down much from the last count, but who knows.

Portsmouth's initial enrollment figure of 233 has now been changed to 190 (on the OHSAA website) after appealing to the OHSAA, keeping PHS in D3. The Trojans have 3 starters back. Valley's enrollment of 122 could very well put them in D4. It will be a close call (120 was D4 cutoff last year). With what the Indians have coming back (4 starters), they could make a very serious run in the 2015-2016 postseason.

It is good to see that the OHSAA is adjusting the webpage as the numbers change instead of just one final jump at the end

I got curious. Fort Frye has 121 boys in the school and are one of the bigger schools in The PVC. The only 3 schools relatively near to us that are within 15 of that number are Crooksville, Monroe Central, and Federal Hocking. Also, we'll be the smallest in division III.

I also notice that the combined forces of Fort Frye and Waterford would still be division III.

Funny how new enrollment numbers show African trick going from 223 in earlier numbers down to 89 in newest release.
