Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
WAVERLY SCORING:
Kretzer 20 (huge 3 in the 4th)
Martin 12
Roback 8
Johnston 5
Waverly was only 10-19 from the line (3-7 in the 4th)
CHILLICOTHE SCORING:
Ragland 16 (4 threes - two big ones in the 4th to keep Chilly in it)
Turner 7
Minion 6
Elliott 6
I. Beverly 4
L. Beverly 2
London 2
Chillicothe was 4-5 from the line
Chillicothe lead 16-9 after one and 24-19 at the break
Waverly came out after the break and started doing what they should have to begin with and took the ball inside. The Tigers lead 35-33 after 3.
The difference in the game was in the paint which Waverly controlled. Waverly was the more physical team and controlled the pace.
Waverly lead 42-41 with 3:29 to play with a Cavs timeout.
Waverly missed the front end of one and one with 2:28 to play and the Cavs called timeout with 2:19 to play.
Roback hit one of two with 2:00 to play to put Waverly up 43-41.
It stayed at 43-41 when the Cavs called a timeout with .52 to play.
With .19 to play Kretzer hit 2 FT's to put Waverly up 45-41.
Waverly used a foul (one of two to give) with around 15 seconds to play then Munion hit a bucket for the Cavs with .10 to play and a Cavs timeout.
Roback missed two FT's with .08 to play to set up the Cavs last chance. Turner drove to just inside the ark and missed a fairly contested shot at the buzzer.
The Tigers did a great job on Turner and kept him frustrated. London was pretty much a non-factor. He did have some blocked shots but that was about it.
Man can that Ragland shoot the rock. He was draining contested shots all night.
Great game by ALL the Tigers tonight!

Congrats to Waverly on the win. A good ballclub to be sure.
As for Chillicothe's London going back to the other thread, the kid is still a young player with a ton of raw talent. It'll be interesting to see the next leap he takes.

Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
The game of basketball is real simple. Take care of the basketball and make shots and you usually win. Tonight the Waverly Tigers did that, while Chillicothe did not. No excuses other then the Cavs played our typical "We are going to go through a period in the game and do dumb stuff". That we did. Here is my take on the game.
1) WBEX reports Cavs had 17 turnovers to 10 for Waverly. I think the 17 may have been kind. Bottom line is we did not take care of the ball. Most of the turnovers were unforced.
2) Foul Trouble in the 1st half killed the Cavs momentum. Ragland, London and at least one other had two fouls. Ragland and London sit the final 4 minutes of the 2nd qtr while Turner picks up his second. This took the Cavs ability to press away. Waverly does a good enough job of turning the ball over, so you don't need to foul.
3) Most important minutes of a game are 2 minutes at the start. Cavs won that. 2 minutes before half (Waverly won that), 2 minutes to start the second half (Waverly won that) and 2 minutes to end the game (pretty much a standoff). Cavs give up an 8-0 run to end the half and start the second half.
4) Harrison Martin - He does not get enough credit at all. He put up some huge putbacks (nobody put their body on him). He helped out tremendously against the press and he figured out how to score in the 2nd half against London. Give him credit, as London got him early with a pretty nasty block. He took his mom's advice when she told him to keep going at the big man.
5) Free Throw Shooting - While Waverly is horrendous at shooting free throws (lets be honest), they outscore the Cavs and make double the shots the Cavs take.
6) Big Time Players - I thought Ragland and Kretzer neutralized each other and I thought they would be a find matchup. Two of the best players in Southeast Ohio. The Cavs Big Time player Turner did not show up for the second time against the Tigers (last year probably his worst game and this year in his top 5 worst games). Many will say it was the defense, but I can assure you he has seen much better defense. IMO, Mike tried to do to much and had many unforced errors. I love him like my son, but he did not show up tonight.
7) Waverlys Team - These kids play hard and play together. The strongest comment made to me tonight (which sums it up for me) is that it was "A team against five players". In other words, five players won't beat a team. At times Chilly looked like a team this year. However, at times we have not hunkered down like Gary Kellough teams do. That starts in the spring, continues through the summer, builds in the fall and produces District Championships.
We will be back, but this year belongs to Waverly. I looked at my young son and my young nephew and told them both. Remember this and don't ever let it happen to you. Not only is the "HAT" our house, but Southeastern become our Home away from Home.
As I told Kretzer and Martin after the game. Don't celebrate long. Don't be content with this win. Go down to Athens next week and represent. Either team could have played with Logan Elm. But LE has the heart of champions and they know what it takes to get it done down at the CONVO. Waverly has to play better than it did tonight and if they do, then anything can happen. Congrats to the Tiger Nation.
GO CAVS!!! WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
After watching the Cavs for the first time this season I just have one question for the Chilly fans. Is the way the cavs played tonight the way they have approached every game this season? I realize Coach Kellough has won a state title and I haven't. However, I strongly feel that Chillicothe could have been a real force this season had they used the talent that they had on the floor. You have a 6'8 post player with above average ability and he gets no touches. Mr. Ragland is lighting it up from everywhere on the court and yet you don't run him off any doubles to get open looks. (The shots he made were all contested) Turner is one of the best play makers i have seen all year, he is lightning fast with good court vision yet you take the ball out of his hands in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line. I am just a little curious as to what the Chillicothe fans that have been around the team all year have to say? Maybe it was just the game against the Tigers but i never really seen a half court set.
I think in smaller portions of the game each team got away from what makes them good teams. For Waverly it was mainly the first quarter when Martin got one touch. They have to run their offense through Harrison to be successful. For Chillicothe they took the ball out of Turners hands in the second half and played him at the 2 guard. He is your play maker and if you aren't going to run an offense he is the guy that can create the offense.

Nice win Tigers.
May as well give Waverly the D II sate championship trophy; They beat a team from the SEOAL!

Waverly looks to have put the clamps on Turner.
More teams should have done this during the year

Key #1: Shut down Turner.
Key #2: Control the Paint
Key #3: Limit Turnovers

Why would beating a seoal team warrent a state title? from the looks of it everybody would be getting one then!!!!
Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
Excellent posts by all. I'm sure everybody that fish-tailed down route 50 to get to the game were very happy they came. As a fan, what more could you want. I'm very proud to be a Tiger this morning. Congrats Cavs on a good season...I thought their young men and coaches handled themselves with class and played their hearts out. Hopefully that pressure-cooker atmosphere last night will help us in what will be a very tough test on Friday. However, like Hitch is trying to call Southeastern "their" gym away from home...now, we're going down to MY NECK OF THE WOODS Friday baby!
)) I'm so excited to be going back "home" to watch my team, and not somebody else's....WAAAAAAAVERLY......WAAAAAAAAVERLY!

Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
Great post and i am glad no one is on here saying a team got "lucky" or whatever- the better of the two teams on this particular night won.. if they played a best out of three or five the outcome could very well be different. I thought Waverly was more physical and i thought chilly did a better job of creating their own shots.
One thing Chilly does that i will never understand- they dont use MALIK London- he is going to be a special player and chilly better start getting him more involved!!! Don't give me that crap he is just a soph either--Waverly starts two soph's and Mr. London deserves more touches!
I honestly thought the big reason Waverly won was because they handled the press chilly tried to throw at them. Kelly and Johnston were not bothered by the pressure and the Tigers coaching staff did a good job of putting the ball in other kids hands to change it up.
The real strange thing that i seen last night was that Waverly played man defense. If i had a dollar for everytime someone told me that Waverly would have to zone chilly or they would get blown out i would be rich!!! All the Waverly kids heard was that Chilly was far to athletic for them and their press would kill Waverly and maybe on any other night it would have- and maybe they were more athletic but i was real proud of our coaches and players because they must have felt different- because they lined up man to man and said "Lets get it" - Hey we gave them every bit of the energy we had and we came out on top- good job Tigers.
After the game as the players were leaving and as the gym was getting empty I saw Micheal Turner go over and hug Devin Kelly, Derrick Roback, and Sam Johnston- what class, what a nice thing to do for a young man that just played his last high school game- Hey Chilly you guys played well and showed class in your loss and you should be proud of your efforts. This rivarly is played clean and hard and that is the way it should be.

Congrats to both teams for a game well played and to Waverly for the W. Sounds like it was a good game to see.
How many seniors played for Chillicothe?

bucki4life,

All year the Achilles heel for Chillicothe has been their lack of a good passing point guard. Turner has done his best, but he's a scorer, not a passer,he was forced to play out of position at the point out of a lack of a better alternative. If he's not scoring, he doesn't give you a whole lot in the way of distribution or creating. and Manion simply is too wild and out of control to play the point although he has the best PG mentality and floor vision on Chilli's roster. I've said it 100 times this year, a Caleb Knights type player who could just take care of the ball in crucial times and create opportunities for others would have made this Chilli team VERY good. The passing ability of this team and ability to create for each other instead of themselves was just not very good this year. It would be great to get London more touches, but there simply isn't anyone on the roster that can get him the rock with the drive and dish and he's not yet strong enough to get good post position and fight through body contact to score.
I thought that Waverly had to slow the game down and force Chilli to score in the half court to win. I believe i said if it stayed in the 40's that i liked Waverly's chances. well they did just that. Congrats to them on handling the pressure and finishing big plays down low. They are dangerous down low. I'll definitely be rooting for this Tiger team the rest of the way b/c they have a great group of kids.
I thought Ragland would be the wild card, and he gave Chilli what they needed, but there was no way to predict that Turner would have such an off game. I also thought Zach Johnson had a great first half. He's going to be a very solid player.
Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
A hard fought physical game and both teams played with class. What more can you ask for! Tournament atmosphere at its best. Several times Jake and Derek's hustle getting back saved what appeared to be an easy basket by the Cavs. Sammy's court awareness and ability to break the press are invaluable. It was apparent Waverly made a conscientious effort to take the ball into the paint. The result was foul trouble for the Cavs and foul shots for the Tigers. We didn't settle for outside jump shots and it paid off.
I was very impressed by the sportsmanship showed by both teams in an emotional hard fought game. This is certainly a reflection of both programs and their coaches.
The highlight of the evening might have been coach Hobbs cutting down the last string on the net and tossing it into the air only to see it get logged on top of the backboard.
Just glad Jake didn't fall off the ladder while retrieving it.
Kind of neat walking outside into a winter wonder land after the game. It was even neat seeing the long string of headlights behind us as we traveled down route 50. As they say on the radio......Good Stuff!

Re: Waverly 45 Chillicothe 43
Observations, comments and reflections
1. Great atmosphere. Only problem seemed to be the sheriffs and administrators getting after the Chilli student section a number of times. Anybody know what this was about. I tried to pay attention and never did see any of them out of line. Just seemed to be cheering.
2. Didn't understand the way Chilli used their subs. Isaac Beverly and Zac Johnson had great 1st qtrs and both disappeared for long stretches. Manion playing the point resulted in very little success for the cavs. I just thought that several times the combination of players we had on the floor was perplexing.
3. Why does Chillicothe not run any sets to get London the ball on the blocks or in the paint ? And the way Ragland was shooting why do we never see screens or rubs to free hAll of his shots had to be earned on a 1 on 1 basis. Do not understand this at all.
4. Waverly's doubling the ball after Chilli crossed half court really seemed to rattle the Cavs . Unlike Waverly who most of the time used their big men to help beat the Chillicothe press.
5. Waverly's big men did a GREAT job of sprinting back on defense. Saved them a number of points.
6. How many carries ( palming/traveling ) did Chillicothe have on the guards. Waverly guards did an overall better job of handling the ball.
7. Waverly was successful controlling the tempo ( and they did run when they had opportunities )and their execution of a half court offense to me was the main reason they are going to Athens ( good luck by the way )
8. One of the officials lives in Waverly and has a step son who attends Waverly. Will not say he affected the outcome BUT it probally isn't a good idea to allow this to begin with.
9. Had Waverly shot free throws better they would have won going away.
10. Has anyone else noticed that Coach Kellough never appears to do the radio after a loss. But is always there after a win.
