Hannan to petition TVC

Post by hannancoach »

We are discussing petitioning the TVC for membership. I know we won't get Athens vote but do you see us having a chance of being invited in as a member?

I, for one, would love to see us add Hannon. They would be a similar to one of the other schools we just accepted.

That is the problem with the TVC. They lose a couple great coaches, then they start adding some of these schools that are either running from schools their own size, or are so bad that no other league will accept them. I can forsee the demise of the TVC if this continues. All the while the SEOAL is getting better and better by dumping some of the schools that couldn't compete.

Athens played a home-and-home series with Wahama in football, not Hannan.

Hannan, however, is already playing Wellston in boys basketball. Played twice this season. The Runnin' Rockets might like that idea, but I cannot foresee this being favorable amongst other TVC programs.

A lot — not all — but a lot of people I have spoken with are already worried about the limited number of non-league contests throughout the course of any season. Taking away even more of those for another league member would not help that cause, unless there would be another re-alignment.

Athens has never played Hannan in anything ... NOTHING ... I don't even know where Hannan is ... why does that keep getting mentioned? Athens didn't play them in football, basketball, baseball and have no plans to ... Our football schedule next year consists of PARKERSUBRG SOUTH (A D-1 equilivent in Ohio) ... WARREN, CHILLICOTHE, GALLIA ACADEMY and we're still looking for a bigger school to round out the non-league schedule next year ... So please, put the non sense involving Athens and Hannan to rest ... We had a two year agreement with Wahama because we dropped out of the SEOAL and literly had nobody to play, everyone's schedule was full in Ohio - Athens had no choice ... Now that we are able to schedule schools to fit the TVC-Ohio non-league portion, the Bulldogs have beefed up their schedule big time ... Athens now has the toughest non-league schedule hands down in the TVC when it comes to football.

Hannan High School is located in Ashton, W.Va. and in Mason County, roughly seven miles from Route 2 between Point Pleasant and Huntington.

Headed toward Huntington, turn left just before the second set of railroad crossings. About 25 minutes south of Point Pleasant.

Home of the Wildcats and Lady 'Cats.

I don't want to cause a big argument here, cause some people will never admit they are wrong, or even inaccurate, even when it is clear that they are. But I have to disagree with Athens having the toughest schedule hands down. First of all, when you are basing power schedules partly on a WV team that hurts your argument IMO. P. South beat one team with a winning record. The other teams they beat had 1 win or less. They lost to Warren, who lost to Ironton, and Portsmouth who are both D4 in Ohio. So it is not like they can compete with D1 powers in Ohio. Or even D3 powers for that matter. Chilli was 1-9. Gallia was 2-8. I would say NY has a tougher schedule in NC, Ready, and St. Clairsville. Of course this is just my opinion. Please don't give me the school size argument though, since we had to read all Fall and most of the Winter how size doesn't matter.

while were at it why dont we let Ohio Valley Christian and Study hall into the Hocking as well. This would be a terrible idea. South Gallia and Wahama already lessen the credibility of the league.

Being from Athens, I have to admit being a bit embarrassed over the way we have treated Hannan.

I am going to have to stepp out on a limb here and say "What in the world was the TVC thinking when they accepted Wahama into the conference?" ... I mean seriously. Now don't everyone get their panties in a knot and think i am dumping on Wahama. They are acctually a great school and have had really successful athletics teams. However, the problem is that they aren't even in our state. Why would you accept a school into your conference that isn't even in your own state? The TVC doesn't really benefit from this addition at all... The only benefit from this decision is to Wahama who now gets to come over into Ohio and play teams they can probably beat up on most years and they don't have to travel as far as they would if they stayed in WV for games.

Now... as far as adding Hannan. It's an even stupider move because they are 25 to 30 mins from Pt. Pleasant, which is about 25 to 30 mins from the closest TVC Hocking school (South Gallia). Then you look at the trips that other schools like Waterford, Belpre, Trimble, Federal Hocking, and Miller would have to make just to play a conference game....???? It makes no sense at all, and i'm not dissin Hannan in the least bit because i'm sure they have teams that will compete. I feel ashamed to have gone to a TVC school when the conference is making these kinds of decisions...

Let me know if you agree........

Heavy D - Size of a school doesn't matter when your comparing a D-II team to a D-III team ... or a D-IV team to a D-V team ... But obviously a school that has over 1,300 students (like P-South) will probaly be at an advantage over a school/team that only has 99 boys (like Eastern) ... But my argument still stands that each and every school has to be looked at individually, you can't just assume things on enrollment (which is what people were doing during fotball season saying Athens should be better than the rest of the TVC solely because they had a few kids over the limit and had to move to D-II) ... That is just the dumbest notion ever ... You can have 500 boys in your school - but if only 40 of them play football, what's the difference between them and a D-V team like Trimble that has over 40 football players? So again, each school has to be looked at individually every time ...

With P-South - I only stated that the school is a D-1 equilevent because a lot of folks don't even know what kind of school it is, where its located, etc..etc .... But their football program is pretty darn good ... last year they were 7-3 and the year before that they went 7-3 ... They finished ranked 12th in the state (in WV big School division) and the teams they beat didn't all have 1-win or less ... Yea, they lossed to Warren by a few points but Warren was in the playoff race last year in D-II, Region 7 up until week 10 ... P-South killed Marietta 48-19, beat Wheeling Park 77-71 and crushed Parkersburg 35-14.

P-South is definitly an upgrade for the Bulldogs schedule ... they have a good solid football program and their facilities are unreal. I'm only trying to point out with all the negativity Athens has taken because of switching leagues, they have done one heck of a job upgrading their football schedule and should no longer be subject to all the negativity surrounding the decision. The point made about "LAST YEARS' records of Chillicothe & Gallia doesn't mean anything ... they could both be right back in the thick of things next season. Gallia Academy has a rich football tradition and they never stay down for very long.

When adding P-South, Warren, Gallia Academy and Chillicothe to the schedule - the thought surrounding those additions revolved around the "LONG TERM" ramifications (not what each team did last year) ... that schedule two years from now could be one of the toughest in all of Southeastern Ohio - it just depends on where each program is at when 2012 rolls around)

Anything the TVC does has had me scratching my head.

They need some larger schools so they can go to 3 divisions, not smaller schools. Not knocking the folks at Wahama but I don't think adding them was a good idea only because they are from WV and their starting/ending times for their seasons don't matchup well with Ohio's.

My thought is that the TVC should sit tight on any petitions that may come before it and let the teams that are in the conference now get settled in and then check to see what it's members might want to do 2 years from now.

Parkersburg South 2009
8/28 A Ripley (1-0) L 7-19
9/4 A Brooke (9-0) L 23-27
9/11 H Warren (OH) (7-3) [2:7] L 28-31
9/18 H Winfield (0-3) W 55-7
9/25 H Marietta (OH) (1-9) [2:7] W 48-19
10/2 A Washington (0-1) W 34-12
10/9 H Parkersburg (6-4) W 35-14
10/16 H Bye week (BYE) (0-0) *
10/23 H Robert C Byrd (0-1) W 28-0
10/30 A Wheeling Park (1-9) [1:0] W 77-71 2 ot
11/6 A John Marshall (2-7) [2:0] *

If you notice Wheeling Park was 1-9. So was Marietta. John Marshall was 2-7, so if they ended up beating them then I guess they beat a team with two wins. With your comparison of size, I guess Athens being D2 should have no problem playing them even though they are a D1. Trimble is D6.

The TVC will be alright the teams they picked up were good for the TVC. People hate on the Rebels but if you think back a few years ago the Rebles beat every TVC team they played. They are down and young this year with only 3 seniors. The Rebles will surprise peolpe next year.

Oh really!!! I could of swore that the toughest schedule in southeastern Ohio would of consisted of teams like Logan, Ironton, Portsmouth, Jackson, Gallia, and Chillicothe. Oh wait, those are all SEOAL teams that Athens decided they didn't want to play with anymore. Even though they are bigger than all of them except Logan. In case you forgot 93Bulldog Athens does play in a predominantly division 4 and 5 league which therefore disqualifies them from having the toughest schedule in anything.

As far as Hannan goes the TVC hocking should not accept them. Truthfully, they shouldn't have accepted Wahama either. A 9 team league is too much. A team should have at least 3 non league games. Plus the fact that Wahama and Hannan are from West Virginia is only going to complicate scheduling. South Gallia would have been a better fit for the SOC 1 travel wise IMHO, but they were not looking to expand at the present time. The Hocking should of looked at adding some teams like Fort Frye or Crooksville instead.

Lastly, as GAHS 4 ever said the SEOAL has not gotten rid of anyone. They all left for there own reasons. Zanesville is in a better situation in the ECOL. Ironton thinks they are too good to be in a league. Athens just wanted to win at any cost. Marietta like Zanesville is probably in a better situation in the ECOL travel wise, but I am reading that the new league will consist of Zanesville, Dover, Cambridge, New Philadelphia, Steubenville, and Marietta. Marietta may not win a league football game ever again, but I give them an A for effort.

I have heard everyone complain about Athens leaving the SEOAL thinking they just wanted to win games by transferring to what posters feel is an "inferior" conference, the TVC. Did anyone ever think that economics ever entered into their decision? In an era when money is tight for school districts, their move to the TVC was a fiscally responsible one as they virtually have no trip over 30 miles-that sure beats trips to Zanesville, Ironton, Chillicothe, etc. Likewise, their rivalries are better as they play several in county rivals as well as neighboring county schools such as Vinton and Meigs meaning more gate moneys. They may have done the smartest thing of any school during these tight times (which do not appear to be getting any better for schools) as they were fiscally responsible meaning more money for educating their students. Getting an education is the key thing here while keeping extracurriculars alive without going to play to play. I for one commend Athens's decision for putting their students first.
