Since it's basketball season - these are some books I've read with "basketball" as part of the theme.
The Lords of Discipline - Pat Conroy - about a college team [fictionalized Citadel]
One on One - Tabitha King [wife of Stephen] - about a high school team in Maine
A Prayer For Owen Meany - John Irving
The Last Shot - Darcy Frey - a book about a real high school basketball team on the same order as Friday Night Lights is about a HS football team. This book was written in the '80's - the paperback version was put out a decade later and has a "where are they now" section regarding the players named and followed in the book. There was a recent ESPN movie [can't remember the title] about current players at the same HS, Abraham Lincoln in Coney Island, New York.
I really loved all these books!

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

Set in the 1950s--looks at the disturbing underside of so-called ordinary life, and even more sucessfully than John Cheever exposes the angst and dissatisfaction that teem beneath the placid suburbs.

I have read "The Mayflower" by Nathan Philbrick. I told Kantucky to read it...it is a very good book. I never knew the extent of what the Pilgrims wnet through to come to America!
