Today in History

Letitia Youmans, the founder of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in Canada, was born 180 years ago today, in 1827, near Hamilton. A teacher, she became involved in the anti-liquor movement and attended the Chautauqua assembly in 1874. Through her efforts, local groups formed across the country and in 1885 a national union was formed and she was its first president.
