Buzzer/Clock...Referees please

This is 100% to be informative and assist those of us on how it works.

A shot before the buzzer....how do we know if it should count? As fans we watch the game and hear the buzzer and our eyes are on player with ball while clock maybe counting down in our head, but we scream and yell based on if shot got off before the buzzer sounds.

If the rule is to go by the clock hitting 0’s....is there a ref watching the clock? Is it the ref with best view of clock/player with ball or ref not watching player with ball? Does the ref see clock hit zero and then look for ball still in touch of shooter? (Slight .2 delay similar to NFL delay of game on offense) or is ref timing it in his head the last couple seconds? Is the buzzer any use in any of this?

College and NBA have the backboard lights which I assume more accurate and visually accessible. The buzzer can’t be heard at 0:00 due to auditory delay.....either way though unless ref counting last couple seconds in his head there has to be a slight .2ish delay be it buzzer sound or ref watching clock for 0:00.

Maybe scoreclocks could have buzzer time go off at it hits .1?

Thoughts? Answers?

I do not want ref bashing...I’m trying to understand how it works myself.

Mods please delete if any bashing begins.

Ok , First the official who is opposite the table has the last second shot and is watching the shot and listening for the buzzer. If for some reason he needs help he can ask for it. We go by the buzzer because in theory even when the clock hits 0.0there still could a 100th of a second left.

We can by rule even ask the timer which we never do because we realize that he or she has to live in the community and to rule against his or her team could end causing problems.

Was watching a JV game and a weird scenario happened.
Team A was shooting the first shot of a one and one. While the shots in the air a member of team A gets called for a foul while jostling for position on the rebound. The shot went in. Im just curious on the rule from there.

In the game the refs counted the shot, didn’t allow a second shot and awarded the player from team b to shoot a one and one on the other end (they were also in the bonus) is this correct? I had just never seen it happen before.

Going on your description, they should have cleared the lane shot the 2nd shot then applied whatever penalty went with the foul on A.

If refs can not make the call they should go over to the timer and he/she makes the decision

Let me rephrase a bit. If the horn malfunctions or is not set. We will go to the timer for input, but the official's will always make the call.

Just an fyi . If when the clock is stopped and shows 3 tenths of a second or less, by rule there cannot be a shot attempt, it must be a tip to count.

Ok Staying with the clock. Near the end of the game, shot with a long rebound, A rebound, B fouls A ,whistle an a blink if the eye later , horn goes off. What do the officials do.

I have seen refs get together and put some time on clock. Some send it in overtime. Even put more time on clock then they should have.

If in a bonus situation you shoot the foul shots. The clock is another issue , to put time on the clock one of the officials has to have definite knowledge of how much time was left when the whistle blows. We are not allowed to guess or randomly put time , one of us has to see the clock
So if no official has seen time left, we clear the lane and if the first shot is made , game over.
