It may be humorous, but Greenup Co is, I think, the geographically largest county in KY, and with no major metropolitan area. It's easy for city schools to provide transportation for their students over roads/streets they're convinced will be cleared by their municipalities at no cost to their schools, but a lot tougher for rural districts. So they "cancel" more often in deference to safety rather than put their buses/students out on treacherous roads. I absolutely get that - try making that call yourself at 5 - 6 AM. Besides, you'll just have to make up that lost day later so there's no gain.
And, given all the budget limitations and failed levies, elimination of automatically free bus transportation is a great way to cut expenses for school systems. Gripe about "bussing" - fine - it's gone! Parents then have to get their kids to school on their own. Won't THAT work well??!!
And don't give me the "I walked a mile and back to school all uphill", because I'll bet none of you did!

Sorry for my incorrect, poorly remembered information - I should have looked it up before posting!

If the weather we're supposed to get on Monday hits, GC will be out a few days. Definitely over. I hope I'm wrong. I hate working there when the roads are bad. It is still a massive county.

The reason KY. schools close so quickly is because their funding ($$$) is based on Average Daily Membership (ADM). If kids are not in school, they get less money because the ADM is so low. In Ohio, funding is based on property taxes, which is a joke in itself since the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled in the Perry Case (3 times if not mistaken) that the way Ohio funds schools is unconstitutional. Most of us have traveled, Rt. 23 to Ashland, the AA, Rt. 7 out of South Shore or Rt. 1 to Grayson. These are some of the best roads. If a person can get to those routes, they are usually ok but that does not count the hills, hollows and dirt roads that make up much of the landscape of not only Greenup and Lewis counties but also Scioto. BTW, I am taking over 20. ;-)
