A California man admitted he taught high school for 17 years without being able to read or write. "It's embarrassing for me, and it's embarrassing for the nation," said John Corcoran, who now retired.

When I went to college, we had to read a passage in front of our student teaching supervisor, Mrs. Meyers, to prove we could read.

They had people who graduated and couldn't read.

This was the case for other fields of study too and not just in education.

This would not happen now because of all the testing that has to be completed to earn a teaching license.
