Nelsonville teen killed in accident

A Nelsonville teenager was killed and five other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Athens County Tuesday.

The crash occurred at 4:43 p.m. at the intersection of Route 691 and York Twp. Road 260 (Matheny), according to the State Highway Patrol.

According to the patrol, Ernie Bridgeman III, 16, of Logan, failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection and his car was struck by a pickup driven by Kenda Kirkendall, 51, of New Marshfield.

The crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Tyler Moore of Nelsonville, a passenger in Bridgeman’s vehicle. Tyler was a senior at Nelsonville-York High School.

Kirkendall was taken to Doctors Hospital Nelsonville by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services with non-incapacitating injuries and Bridgeman was taken to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital by SEOEMS, also with non-incapacitating injuries, the patrol said.

Sixteen-year-old Aaron Rosser of Nelsonville, another passenger in Bridgeman’s vehicle, suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken to Doctors Hospital by SEOEMS. Aaron is a senior at Nelsonville-York High School.

Two other passengers in Bridgeman’s car were also taken to area hospitals by SEOEMS for non-incapacitating injuries. Cody Moore, 16, of Nelsonville, was taken to O’Bleness by SEOEMS and released by this morning, according to the hospital. Cody is a sophomore at Nelsonville-York High School. Brian Bridgeman, 17, of Nelsonville, was taken to Doctors Hospital, the patrol said. Brian is a sophomore at Nelsonville-York High School.

Counseling is being provided to Nelsonville-York High School students, according to Nelsonville-York High School Principal Mick McClelland. Counselors will be on site at the high school today.

“It’s a tragedy, and we are coping as best we can,” McClelland said this morning.

Kirkendall’s passenger, 3-year-old Killian Tolley, was also taken to Doctors Hospital, but was not injured, the patrol said.

All the parties in the crash were wearing seat belts, and the accident remains under investigation, the patrol said.

NELSONVILLE — At least two people remained hospitalized Wednesday following a crash outside Nelsonville that claimed the life of Nelsonville-York senior Tyler Moore.

Meanwhile, at least two other teens injured in the accident had been released from area hospitals, including one whose injuries the State Highway Patrol had described as incapacitating.

Aaron Rosser, a senior at Nelsonville-York High School, was discharged from Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville on Wednesday, according to hospital officials.

A Nelsonville-York sophomore, Brian Bridgeman, 17, was transferred from Doctors Hospital to another hospital Wednesday, but hospital officials would not say where he was taken.

Kenda Kirkendall, 51, of New Marshfield, was listed as a patient at Doctors Hospital Wednesday, but officials would not release her condition.

Another Nelsonville-York student injured in the crash, sophomore Cody Moore, 16, the brother of Tyler Moore, was released from O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, hospital officials said Wednesday.

Ernie Bridgeman III, 16, of Logan, was taken to O’Bleness after the crash, but he was not listed as a patient there Wednesday. Hospital officials would not say whether he was sent home or transferred to another hospital.

All of the teens were in a car driven by Bridgeman III, the patrol said. Around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Bridgeman III failed to stop at a stop sign at Route 691 and York Twp. Road 260 (Matheny), according to the patrol. His car was struck by a pickup driven by Kirkendall, who was driving southbound on Route 691, the patrol said.

Killian A. Tolley, 3, a passenger in Kirkendall’s vehicle, did not receive any injuries.

All of the parties in the crash wore seat belts, and the crash remains under investigation.

Grief counseling is being provided to Nelsonville-York High School students, according to Principal Mick McClelland.
