Unfortunately it is time to start a thread to post off season news about the OSU football program as they start anew for 2023. I find one thread easier to navigate, so feel free to make posts here or make stand alone topics as you see fit.

The 2023 off season should be interesting as the Buckeyes have open positions to fill at QB, the Oline, along with finding answers for the defensive backfield . That and searching for a new offensive coordinator.

Throw in possible additions or subtractions to team rosters because of NIL bidding and the portal merry-go-round, the 2023 CFB landscape will be quite interesting.

OSU Buckeyes currently in transfer portal:

Jaylen Johnson (Safety) to Memphis
Teradja Mitchell (LB) to Florida
Jantzen Dunn (Safety) to Kentucky
Javontae Jean-Baptiste (DL) to Notre Dame
Mason Arnold (LS) to Michigan State
JK Johnson (CB) to LSU
Michael O'Shaughnessy (Punter) to Michigan State

Players transferring to OSU:

John Ferlmann (LS) from Arizona St
Casey Magyar (K- PWO) from Kent State
Ja'Had Carter (S) from Syracuse

Ja'Had Carter, the top ranked safety in the transfer portal, will transfer from Syracuse to Ohio Stste. He will come with two years of remaining eligibility.

I don't care for all this new college football. Looks like it is becoming something they didn't see coming.

Let the defense transfer out they were again the weakness on the team or was it the Big 12 coach?

Agree with you NR, but there is no going back to the way it was . There are even 20 states that allow NIL in high schools and most states have some sort of open enrollment rules that facilitate athletic transfers. The only way regulation will come is recognition of college athletes as employees and the athletes forming a national union that can negotiate a collective bargaining agreement that would set out binding rules for both the colleges and players. Until then it is the wild wild west in building rosters.

With Williams return, the Buckeye running back room will be crowded with TreVeyon Henderson and Evan Pryor returning from injury plus Dallan Hayden and Chip Trayanum. Likely one or two hit the transfer portal.

I have no idea how the powers that be didn’t see this mess coming. The money with no strings attached is similar to lottery money. Cut and run, suddenly become afraid to get injured, always seeking greener pastures, etc…. Additionally, how does a >25 yr old brain process instant riches. Will they be more or less motivated. The worst is yet to come IMO. Maybe NIL with a smallish sign on bonus and performance/progress monies afterwards. Guaranteed lump money has destroyed many people and families. Add to that mess the transfer portal and it’s chaos.

Center Luke Wypler along with OT Paris Johnson declare for the NFL draft. This along with the expected departure of Dewand Jones leaves Ohio State with a major rebuild on the offensive line.

OL and DB's will be the biggest question mark coming into next season. Along with a NEW QB. Talent wise they are as good as anyone in the country but time will tell. Lose to ND and Xichigan and you will see a TON of OPT outs for the Bowl season.

At least OG Matt Jones announced he will return for the Buckeyes, leaving 3 spots on the line to fill. Only backup Josh Fryar returns with any game experience to fill one of those spots. Honestly State's OL recruiting and development has not been optimal under Studrawa and now Frye and they have missed out on linemen in this portal cycle.

LB Tommy Eichenberg announces he will forego the NFL draft and play for the Buckeyes in 2023.

Javontae Jean-Baptiste transfers to Notre Dame. OSU incidentally plays the Irish next season.

Brian Hartline promoted to Offensive Coordinator. Hartline has had tremendous success as OSU's wide receiver coach. Excellent in recruiting and player developent. Still the promotion is quite a leap for Hartline, and suggests Ryan Day will not relinquish in game offensive pay calling duties. It is also assumed Hartline will continue to coach the wide receivers.
