Ohio State 54 Iowa 10 Saturday October 22nd 2022

Post by Omega »

The Iowa Hawkeyes will roll into Columbus with a good defense and pathetic offense to do battle with the Ohio State Buckeyes this coming weekend. The game will be televised at 12 noon on Fox.

Iowa is ranked 7th in the nation in total yards allowed per game @ 265 ypg . The Hawks rank third in scoring defense @ 9.83 points per game.

The Iowa offense is something only Jim Tressel could love. Punting and field goals are their most potent weapons. The Hawkeye are 127th in the nation @ 14.7 points per game.

Ohio State comes of their bye week still ranked number one in scoring @ 48.8 points per game. The Buckeye defense yields 15.67 points per game, good for tenth nationally.

State should win by a comfortable margin, but I would expect the Bucks to have a vanilla game plan with a road trip to Penn State looming.

State 31 Iowa 13.

Thoughts?

Very similar game to Wisconsin imo. Ohio State O scores early and often, then Iowa O doesn’t have a chance.

45-13 Good guys.

Hopefully the OSU faithful gives the Hawkeyes the Wave as they exit the field.

I had forgotten about 55-24, but I would think that set of numbers is posted in the WHAC. Yet does OSU have anyone still on the roster from that game?

Probably the best defense Bucks have seen so far but how long can they hold out with all the three-and-outs the terrible Herky offense will produce? Another snoozer 45-14

Thats the key to this game. Iowa, IMO, will not be able to control the LOS and move the ball. Thus, they will have/should have a lot of 3 and outs and OSU will have many more possessions.....which means many more scores. Iowa's passing game is not good and their running game is mediocre.

It is a wonderful game for OSU to keep moving in the right direction defensively while getting the offense back on track after the bye week.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been listed as available to play in today's game against Iowa. How much he will play and cntribute may be the only doubt about the contest.

I feel so bad for Iowa's defense! They are legit but when you see how bad your offense is you just lose all hope! Buck's defense looks like the 85 Bears but hard to tell how good they are playing the tomato cans they have been playing so far.

Cbolt, you were close in predicting the outcome and how the game would play out.

Except for one big play, Iowa's defense played well enough for the Hawkeyes to pull the upset. The only problem being the Iowa offense gave away six turnovers and could only manage 159 total yards and a field goal on the day. Simply said, the Iowa offense was putrid.

As good and opportunistic as the Buckeye defense was, the offense had its struggles against Iowa. The Hawkeyes' line kept pressure on QB CJ Stroud, keeping him from finding any rythm with his receivers until late in the game. Iowa's defensive backs blanketed State's receivers and got away with physical play as Stroud did not often have the time for passing plays to develop. That and Iowa limited OSU's running game to 2.2 yards per rushing play.

CJ Stroud was 20 of 30 passing attempts for 286 with 4 touchdowns against 1 int and a fumble that lead to a scoop and score. 79 of those yards came on a post pattern TD to Julian Fleming.

Still a win is a win, and OSU needs to refocus and get ready for the always dangerous trip to Penn State on the 29th.

Defense is the Key point... in the top 10 the Majority of other teams have Good Offenses but Defenses are Lacking... Buckeyes hands down has a very well rounded Offense and Defense which is a very Dangerous thing.

Some additional thoughts on yesterday's game:

Jaxon Smith-Njigba played sparingly yesterday. He still seemed to be hobbled with his injury. The coaching staff said he was pulled from the game due to hitting a set number of play limit. Yet I wonder if the team and JSN would be better served by not trying to work him back into the lineup when he is less than 100%.

Long snapper Bradley Robinson was injured. The LS is invisible until he makes an error, so if OSU has to use a backup going forward, is that position now a concern?

I was initially shocked at the ineffectiveness of OSU's run game yesterday . Watching the replay, I am now more inclined to praise Iowa's effort than be worried about OSU's stats.
