Ohio State 49 Rutgers 10 Saturday October 1st, 2022

Post by Omega »

It is week 5 and the Buckeyes will be entertaing Rutgers this coming Saturday. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30 with the game televised on the Big Ten Network.

The Buckeyes are heavy favorites and figure to use the game as an opportunity to build depth, heal wounds and improve execution.

Rutgers is coming off a 27-10 loss to Iowa, and will likely run every gadget play in the book to try and keep the game interesting this weekend. Scarlet Knight coach Greg Shiano is an ex staffer in Columbus and knows all too well what his squad is up against.

Thoughts?

Given that a third of the 2022 CFB regular season is behind us, here is how OSU has stacked up statistically.

Scoring Offense:
48.8 ppg, third behind Michigan and Oklahoma St.

Total Offense:
558.8 ypg, second behind Tennessee.

Scoring Defense:
16.0 ppg, tied for 21st best in the nation.

Total Defense:
283 ypg, good for 18th best in nation.

The improvement on defense over last year indeed gives credence to the Buckeyes being the favorite to reclaim the Big 10 championship and qualify for the College Football Playoffs.

Its funny to look at these stats and think that OSU's strength of schedule is tops of all top 10 teams, while Michigan's is one of the worst in FBS.....as is Minnesota.

It will all shake out in the end tho

Only thing stopping OSU right now. Is OSU.

Trevyon Henderson / Miya. Williams
Best 1-2 punch in College Football. Period

Reminds me of Nick Chubb/Kareem Hunt

As long as we run the football FIRST, continue to play hard nosed defense well guys that’s ingredients of successful football.

As BleedingRed said……it will all shake out in the end

Agree with the running game being solid and would add Stroud seems to be a better game manager. He appears to have learned how the offense can compliment the defense by controlling time of possession.

Agreed. Stroud is playing like a veteran. And should be.

The players around him should and will help him be the Heisman winner.

They all compliment each other quite well.

OSU game day reports are that Jaxon Smith-Njigba (WR) and Cam Brown (DB) will be unavailable for today's game due to injury.

Well some idiot took out my electric pole with his pickem-up so I was not able to watch the last 3 quarters of the game.

From the score and most of the stats OSU completely dominated Rutgers.

Reading post game story lines it is evident Miyan Williams was the offensive hero, tying an Ohio State single game record with 5 rushing touchdowns.

Also of note, there are story lines that QB CJ Stroud was not at his best, RB TreVeyon Henderson was scratched, and apparently the game got chippy over an inadvertent fake punt.

For the game, OSU generated 413 total yards, with 252 coming on the ground and only 161 through the air.

Miyan Williams was the leading rusher for OSU. He had 21 carries for 189 yards and 5 touchdowns.

CJ Stroud threw for 2 touchdowns on 13 of 22 attempts for 154 yards with 1 interception.

The Buckeye defense was stout statistically. Rutgers only managed 187 total yards with 107 coming on the ground.

All in all it looks like it was a good day for the Buckeyes, especially considering many top 25 teams lost or were in close games today.

Next up for Ohio State is their first road game of the season at struggling Michigan State. They lost today at Maryland 27-13. OSU will be big favorites, but Sparty has wrecked potential OSU national championships in 1973, 1998, and 2015
