Since the Pirates close out 3 games against Cincy and 6 games against the Cards, a 100 loss season is almost a lock.

Cincy ends with the 3 against Pittsburgh the 6 against the Cubbies. They have to win 3 to avoid the 100.

My gut is both teams hit the century mark.

David Bell to return for 2023 season, Cincinnati Reds dismiss five coaches from staff

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/dav ... 57916.html

A long rambling article where Bell blames his staff for a 100 loss season instead of being honest about the bad season:

1. The Reds need better players.

2. The Reds ownership and front office is too cheap and too inept to bring in better players.

Reading the off season Reds news, they desperately want to dump Moustakas and his $18 million dollar contract. Yet his performance is so bad, they would have to throw in some of the prospects they obtained in trading Mahle and Castillo.

I think even more troubling for fans is I have seen discussion that the Reds front office may even look to trade Greene, Lodolo, Stephenson, and India when they reach their arbitration dates in the next 2 to 3 seasons.

The sad thing is the Reds front offce makes money even putting 100 loss teams on the field in front of empty stands because of league revenue sharing and TV money.

So I would expect the Reds will be in a permanent rebuild as they churn their prospects every four years and fill the roster with journeymen and other team's rejects.

Reds ownership can run the team as they see fit, with average payrolls around $55 million. Yet success can be had with very low payrolls, the Cleveland Indians for example.

Just another reminder of the Reds historic front office buffoonary, Cincy is still paying Ken Griffey Jr. $3.6 million a year in deferred contract money. This will continue thru 2024.

That was Jim Bowden. Signing Jr may have been popular with the fans, but saddled the team with deferred salary payments for a player who was in decline.

Reds are just a farm team for the rest of MLB.

Not really. Bowden, Jockety, Krall, they are the same, just with different faces.

Baseball can be celebrated just for the playing of baseball. Reds fans were treated to brief moments of excellence. Strong performances by Castillo, Mahle, and Drury before the trades. Flashes of future strength in Ashcraft , Greene, and Lodolo. Farmer, India and Stephenson actually being major league caliber players.
It is just frustrating that Reds ownership has neither the acumen or inclination to put a consistent .500 team on the field. St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Cleveland are competitive in markets similar to Cincinnati. Why is it that the Castellini's are content to be competitive only with Pittsburgh?

I don't necessarily wanna say the Castillo move was a bad one.. sure he's an ace and every fan would love to keep him, however the return we got for him was nuts with some absolute up and coming studs.. We got the Mariners #1,3,5 and 17 prospect in that. H of a return if you ask me. So looking at the right now, we won't be able to say we won or lost that trade for at least another year until those guys make their ways up
