Cardale Jones Traded To LA Chargers

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cardale Jones, the Ohio State quarterback who jumped from third-stringer to National Championship starter for the Buckeyes during the 2014 season, has a new NFL home.
Drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round in 2016, Jones has been traded to the Los Angeles Chargers. He'll join two former OSU teammates there in defensive end Joey Bosa and linebacker Joshua Perry.
Jones played one game for the Bills during his rookie season, completing 6 of 11 passes for 96 yards.
Jones served as the Bills' third-string quarterback behind starter Tyrod Taylor and former first-round pick E.J. Manuel. After the season, Taylor was viewed as a candidate to leave Buffalo - you remember his offseason status as a suggested option for the Browns.
But then Taylor restructured his contract in March and stayed as the starter. Manuel left as a free agent. Then the Bills drafted Pitt's Nathan Peterman in the fifth round.
The Bills also cleaned house, firing coach Rex Ryan with a week left in the season and not retaining interim coach Anthony Lynn. GM Doug Whaley was fired the day after the draft this year.
So the decision-makers that brought in Jones are gone. Now he's headed to the Chargers, where the new head coach is Lynn, the coach who gave him his only NFL action in that season finale against the New York Jets after Ryan was ousted.
With the Chargers, Jones should slot in behind veteran starter Philip Rivers and Kellen Clemens, the Chargers' backup for several years. Robert Griffin III had worked out for the Chargers recently but wasn't signed.
