Votto is definitely a franchise player! He would be for nearly any team in the majors. His BA is increasing massively, his other numbers are still very good. This is the first sub-par year Votto has had in a Red's uniform, so I'm not too concerned about that. I hated seeing Frazier and Cueto go, but that was a necessary step. Homer Bailey was clearly a mistake, I think everyone would agree on that, but he has good numbers when he's not injured. I like Igelsias and Lorenzen in the bullpen. The players that are making all that money were given those contracts when they were All-Star players, and they deserved those contracts at the time, that was when the Reds were a very good team.

Votto's stats back before he started getting injured were incredible! But, he's still posting good numbers. He's only batting .257 right now but look about a month ago, he was only batting about .205, so there's improvement there, BA is not everything! In the NL among 1B, he is 4th in Runs Scored (46), 3rd in Steals (6), 2nd in Walks (55) and he's in the top 10 in Hits, 2B's and RBI. So yes, he's still a top tier first baseman in the NL.

I will give in to the argument that Bailey didn't earn that contract, but he was given the contract based on what he "could" and "should" be able to do and he hasn't been able to do that because of injuries, he was given the contract based on his 2 no-hitters.

Bailey's ERA in his last 3 seasons before his injury last year:

3.68
3.49
3.71

He had a 5.56 era in 2 starts last year. He didn't deserve the monster contract, but before this injury, he was very reliable and very solid. It was mostly on the 2 no-no's, but let's not act like he was some bum before his injury.

Votto's career OPS is 4th among active players. Behind Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, and Miggy Cabrera. He's among the best offensive players in all of baseball.

Oh and he's the best player at getting on baseball. His .421 OBP is tops among all active players and is 17th all time.

He's worth the money.

Of course as of this date, the Reds are 22 games back and 23 under .500 and it is not yet the all-star break. Votto's stats really do not matter except for trade bait for prospects to further reduce the team payroll. You know, shared major league tv money with a AAA salary structure. The owners can make money with a crappy on field product.

At this time he would be the only Red that is worthy.

Jay Bruce and Zach Cozart would not have been bad choices either.

0% chance that Cueto would've signed long term with Cincinnati.

I remember them even saying he wasn't going to. So you might as well get something for him rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for them improving this year! Here soon is when we'll probably start seeing trades.
