Marietta High Football 2023

Post by pioneer19 »

Starting an offseason discussion thread for the Tigers. Coach Schob bringing in some new coaches for what I assume will be year 2 of the Wing T. Plenty of returners with experience on both sides of the ball. No where to go but up and I expect to see things to improve this season. Thoughts?

2023 Schedule
Week 1 Fort Frye
Week 2 @ West Muskingum
Week 3 Athens
Week 4 @ Claymont
Week 5 Ripley
Week 6 @ Williamstown
Week 7 @ Logan
Week 8 Meigs
Week 9 @ Point Pleasant
Week 10 Warren

My thoughts are I wish we had that schedule back in 1983 : ) Seriously though, I really hope the best for the program. Can they be somewhat competitive with Fort Frye ? I can't believe I am saying that : ). Who would have thought that 40 years ago ? Also ,I have been away from the area for so many years that I really am not too familiar with most of their opponents and could not even predict a record. Thanks for posting this thread and looking forward to following it this season.

Lots of winnable games on that schedule. I think Marietta running the Wing T plays right into the hands of the Cadets. I won’t miss that one for the world. Been wanting to watch those to play in football for years.

That 83 schedule wouldn't be pretty today. Athens, Meigs, and possibly Newark would be the only competitive games. Now down the road, if MHS ever gets things turned around, that schedule would be perfect for a team with legitimate playoff aspirations. Would love to see some of those traditional opponents back on the schedule. :)

Don Drumm will be the place to be August 18th. Not sure how competitive the game will be, but you know both sides will be fired up for this one.

My guess is 5-5, give or take a game. Losses to FF, Williamstown, Logan, Point, and Warren. Front end of the schedule isn’t bad at all minus Fort Frye.

Athens is just plain awful and Meigs is only slightly better.

I was told a while back that they were making some changes to the staff and then saw the assistant jobs and a coordinator position posted. I've been out of the loop lately, so I guess it is possible they decided to keep the whole staff in place. If that is indeed the case, I apologize for the misinformation. :)

I'd say that's a fair assessment. A lot can change by August, but if the boys put in the work this offseason and can avoid the injury bug like last year:

Athens and Ripley should be wins.
I think we get Meigs and Claymont this year.
Warren and Logan will be tough, but not unwinnable.
West Muskingum is a question mark. They thumped us last year and are a program on the rise. Not sure what they return.
Fort Frye, Point Pleasant, and Williamstown. The goal is probably try not to get run off the field in the first half.

If I’m remembering correctly, Point graduated a lot, including their QB. Fort Frye is still Fort Frye, but this is the right year to play them. They’ve been more than a handful the last few years, in particular. I’d agree with your assessment as well, pretty much exactly what I thought as well.

Fort lost a ton 4 all state players. They also lost Wr / Kr / Cb Dak Snodgrass to an ACL injury. That being said the line will still be solid and these kids been running wing T since 4th grade. JV was undefeated. Clayton Miller Qb will be electric this year. 3 year starters Graham baker , MLB/FB Keegan Strode and DT Morgan Smith are going to be the stars of the team. Bryndan Riddle was a beast at S last year will be the main ball carrier. Like all Fort Frye teams early weeks are best time to face them.

They may lose a ton, but Fort Frye is a program that reloads instead of rebuilds. Who does Fort Frye JV play? If they are beating the JVs of Zanesville, John Glenn, Bellaire, etc. I'm sure they probably have plenty of athletes waiting in the wings. Coach Schob needs to get some of those basketball boys out for football this fall. They took care of business against the Cadets on the hardwood last winter and we could use some of that mojo come August. :D

Wow ! The bottom just dropped out of the program the last 40 years. Before that, we were good or at the very least, a tough respectable program.

Those were DARN good football teams. Wing-T. Hardnosed.

That 2001 team almost (should have?) beaten a 10-0 Logan team on the Hilltop. A double-pass (spot pass) in the final couple of minutes on 4th down gave Logan the win 10-6.

The 2002 team snapped Logan's 26-game SEOAL winning streak. Marietta won 13-0 that season at Don Drumm on their way to the playoffs and an SEOAL co-championship.

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Appreciate the service of any ex and current military personnel more than they know.

Wishing the Tigers the best. Coach Jason Schob is and always has been a class act. It takes a lot more than coaches to build something of merit, they just end up taking all the blame. Tough spot to be in. I know Jason’s intentions, love of the game, and knowledge are there to accomplish what I know to be the most important things in sports at that level —

-Creating a supportive environment especially if children don’t have that at home
-Encouraging children to take risks, learn and bounce back from adversity and setbacks
-Teach teamwork and sacrifice for a common goal
-Inspire
-Creating a sense of community

I hope the community can rally behind him and all other coaches at Marietta. The lessons from sports are invaluable, no matter which field they take. Really pains me to see how numbers of players joining, across all ages, has dropped… more than the record or lack of success.

This program, city, and school are always in my thoughts. Wishing you all the best from afar.
