Playoff Question

Post by wobycat »

The top 4 get two home games. But let’s say on the first game a 4 seed gets beat by a 13 seed. Does that mean the 13 seed has to go to the next higher seed’s home or is it a neutral site?

The 13 seed would travel to the 5/12 winner

Higher seed is home

Are we certain that if a lower seeded team beats the higher seed, they don’t assume that seed? Seems like that was why Johnstown got the home side at Jackson in 2018…but I may be misremembering.

Just looked at Eitel…we were both 1 seeds but we had more computer points…now I can’t remember the reasoning behind the home/away decision

For all OHSAA brackets, the “top team” in considered home and gets home locker, jersey, seating, etc. Football playoffs are different and better seed hosts 1st and 2nd. From regional semis on, the “top team” on the bracket is home regardless of seed.

Makes sense since we were in Region 20 that year.

Well that was a state semifinal, so there is no “top team” because those teams weren’t in the same regional bracket. Not sure how OHSAA determines. Better seed, more Harbin points, coin flip, not sure.

I guess if you made the bracket with the regions as the “seeds” 17 above 18 and 19 above 20…🤷🏽 who knows…

So rule of thumb is top seed is home for the first two games.

I thought it was top 4 Is a bye week then top seed plays at home rounds 2 and 3. Then neutral sites. Regional finals and beyond.

Yeah the 16 team has no business playing number 1. This was to get the ohsaa caught up from covid. They saw how much more it generated and kept it.

The question was answered correctly early in this thread.

Last year in Region 11, Tri-Valley was the #3 seed and lost to #13 seed Bellefontaine (they had a stud sophomore running back who was hurt the second half of the regular season and played in week 11) 20-13 on a last minute TD. #6 Western Brown beat #11 Beechcroft. The next week, Western Brown hosted Bellefontaine.

Also, a couple of times in the past, Tri-Valley was supposed to be the away team in week 12 or 13 (neutral site) and was switched to the home team (home team stands) by OHSAA because the pre-sale for Tri-Valley was 3 or 4 times the opponent (one was regional championship against Marion Franklin).

This was how I thought the setup was supposed to be as well in the original plans for this expansion.

It was.

The original setup was 12 teams.

Top 4 get byes then host regional quarters.

5-8 host 9-12 in first round.

Neutral after that.

But with the expansion to 16 per region, we have the current setup.

It will never go below 16 now. I hated it and still hate it but it’s a extra game for the kids so I’ll support that. OHSAA can double the money going from 8 to 16

1. I will never complain about more football but more often than not it does lead to one sided games.
2. I have often wondered why most sports at most levels never re-seed tournaments after each round.
