Portsmouth West Football 2014

Post by sider »

This thread will be for football discussion concerning the upcoming season. Please, withhold personal vendettas/general nonsense while posting on this thread.
It would be nice to have a thread that contains news and pertinent information. Lets act like men and not have this removed.

What we know:
New Coach Ben Johnson, former Liberty Union Offensive Coordinator
One assistant thus far, Jerrod Pendleton (who is running the Strength and Conditioning program)
Good deal of Seniors coming back

Questions/discussion topics:
Can we replace key losses?
Do we have a full schedule?
Any word/names of potential assistants?

Unless something has changed without my knowledge, still need another scrimmage and a jamboree. May be to late for those as some are set a year before. Maybe can
be able to still dig one or the other up cause the boys will need them with the new systems.

I'd like to see the scrimmage with Clearcreek resume, that worked out well in the past.

Last year at the Minford game we was talking about the pinkish peach colored bleachers.

Scrimmage with Clearcreek is not a good idea JMO Stick with Ironton and Gallipolis when they hire someone they may be looking for one too.

Well, I can't resist asking why a scrimmage with AC isn't a good idea? They always provided a pretty good look during the times they did play. Ironton needs to be on the regular season schedule every year like PHS and Wheelersburg. Gallia Academy is a good scrimmage, agreed. Also, the West/ND Preview game back in the day was always a riot.

Gallia last year cancelled the scrimmage with West. One of the reason was that West was to physical in scrimmages. That was straight from the Coaches mouth. May try again Gallia will have a new coach this year.

The scrimmage we had last year that was cancelled was with Wellston.

In the 2012-13 season we scrimmaged Nelsonville York and Ironton, and had a Jamboree game with Wilmington. NY replaced Gallia. Last year we were supposed to scrimmage Wellston and Ironton with no Jamboree , but Wellston canceled.

Even though Newark Catholic will be way down, I am still looking forward to the match up between the two schools.

Couldn't West find a Kentucky team to scrimmage?
Johnson Central
Lawrence County

Should be a pretty good match up. Looking forward to the match up also.
With Kentucky schools starting a week earlier than ours it could be difficult to schedule a scrimmage with one of them. We did scrimmage Johnson Central at Raceland 10 or 11 years ago.

I would guess that with Coach Johnson's ties, I would think an MSL opponent in a scrimmage would be possible. Teays Valley, Bloom Carroll, or Circleville maybe?

We should do a meet and greet at the steak wagon at halftime of the Newark Catholic game.

Is it legal to have practice at 5am and 3pm on the same day in pre season?

Most likely the morning practice is for students that are playing spring sports (baseball/track) and have practice after school and the after school workout is for any boy not playing spring sports.

Baseball team does their own workout they have a pretty good program at West for baseball. The team had to come for punishment and afternoon with weights. I just wondered what off season allowed.

It's actually illegal to hold anything mandatory at this point in the year. However, things can be "strongly encouraged".
